Title of the song refers to Chick Hearn and Stu Lantz, the Los Angeles Lakers broadcasters, but it also is a pun on "Chicken Stew", keeping with the food topics of the song. The first verse "This ballgame's in the refrigerator" refers to what Hearn said when the Los Angeles Lakers were in control during the game. The song itself is believed to be about advertising creating an artificial need for a product, using pizza as an example.

I assume it's about advertising. Has anyone else noticed how obnoxiously repetitive and wholesome pizza commercials always are?

I also think it's just about brainwashing advertising, but what's the intro about (ball game's in the refrigerator, door's closed. Lights are out, butter's getting hard)...?

yea this song is basically about how someone can just see an advertisement and think right away that they need that product and they go so crazy over it that they need therapy.......pizza was just an example

Such a funny song... First, it's called Chic 'n' Stu, which just translated into Chicken Stew, which is funny because the song's about pizza (can't wait for weird al to make a song called Pizza Pizza Pie and its all about chicken stew, lol). My opinion is that the song was first written when Serj or someone was hungry and wanted pizza, but some actual political meaning was added so it wasn't just about pizza. That meaning is what above posts have mentioned, how advertisement makes us want to buy stuff because of computer animation and all that good stuff bout therapy.

This song is about people buying things. They don't know what to spend with their money, so they buy it on things such as pizza. That is what I have heard.

It is obvious that Chic N Stu is about advertising. I believe that this song is about how advertising can control us to the point that we think we need everything we see in advertisements. I know this song sounds silly but that's their interpretation on how silly we interact with advertising. He screams over and over "what a splendid pie, pizza pizza pie, every minute every second buy buy buy buy buy buy." This is what goes on and on in our mind when we see something in advertisements that in reality is just silly, such as pizza pie. we think what a splendid product (as they show us how perfect their product is) and then we think BUY BUY BUY BUY BUY BUY. System goes on to say that we need therapy for our advertisement addiction. Even though this pie may have pepperoni, green peppers, mushrooms, olives and chives. It is a simple message and a simple song.
Or maybe they just wrote this while tripping balls on Acid, but who knows.

since the first part's confusing, im gonna say my interpretation..
first, "ballgame's in the refrigerator," a guy gets hungry when hes watching a game (look down at the comment about Chick Hearn and Stu Lantz)
second, "door's closed" the guy goes out the door to order pizza
third, "light's are out" he turns off the lights before he leaves
fourth, "butter's getting hard" he wants to hurry up and get fresh pizza cuz hes hungry (i may be wrong about this part)
that's my interpretation :P

I agree with the interpretation about Chick Hearn and Stu Lantz, and about turning off the lights and closing the door, but I think the "butter's getting hard" is about him checking to see what there is to eat in the refirgerator and then maybe seeing a pizza commercial foe pizza and he immeadiately wants it so he leaves the refrigerator door open because he's in such a hurry to get the pizza and so the butter's getting hard

The entire first part are things Chick Hearn (RIP) used to say.
"Door's closed, lights out, butters getting hard, and the jello's jigglin'!!"
This meant the game was 'in the bag'. So yeah, they were probably watching a Laker game (live in LA), Chick said his famous lines, and then they got bombarded by Pizza Hut, Dominos, and Papa John's commercials.
Everytime I watch a sporting event and they splash endless pizza ads on the screen I think of this song :-)

I think it's definitely about how messed up and overused advertising is, and I think Serj and Daron decided to use pizza advertising as one example. Notice how braggy and... well, annoying it sounds, "What a splendid pie!".
Companies are ALWAYS praising how amazing their products are in commercials and such. And I think "every minute, every second, buy buy buy buy buy!" kind of speaks for itself, doesn't it? The companies are just telling the people watching the commercial to keep buy their product(s) over and over again.
Now, as for "need therapy, therapy, advertising causes need," I think Serj and Daron are saying that whenever people see something they like in a commercial, they automatically need it. And sometimes it can get to the point where you're overwhelmed with all the stuff you think you need, as if you need therapy or something.
"Advertising's got you on the run..." Well I think this line just proves that this song is clearly about advertising. System tends to use a combination of completely obvious and seemingly nonsensical lines in their songs in order to get their points across. And I think this line literally means that with all this advertising it may feel like we constantly need to be out of the house, shopping for groceries, clothes, etc.
Now as for the intro, I can't give an exact interpretation.
"Ball game's in the refrigerator, door's closed, lights are out, butter's getting hard."
I don't know how to interpret the ball game part, but the rest of it seems to be saying that when the refrigerator door closes the light automatically turns off, and the butter in the refrigerator starts to get hard because of all the cold trapped inside. And now as I take a step back and look at it all, I say to myself, "Congratulations. You just very poorly interpreted something and made it something that needs to be interpreted."
Really, I have no idea what the intro is about other than the fact people typically store frozen pizzas in the refrigerator. But oh well. I think one of the best parts about System is that half the time we don't know what they're talking about. So maybe we're better off...
Hope I helped.

I think this song is about advertising and how it makes you want to buy things more and more once you see it on the t.v.. and how pursuasive advertisments are..

I think it stands for how we're fed lies by the world and how television and other forms of advertising are used as tools to make us follow and obey the lies we're fed
