Taylor Swift: Safe and Sound Meaning
Song Released: 2011
Safe and Sound Lyrics
When I said I'll never let you go.
When all those shadows almost killed your light,
I remember you said don't leave me here alone,
But all that's dead and gone and past tonight.
Just close your...

Don't forget, The Lottery by Shirley Jackson and The Lord of the Flies plus a plethora of other literary allusions including the consequences of a dysutopic society where the ellite make a debacle of the poor (the gladiators; ancient Rome)...oh, and the subtle banjo played when Katniss was most herself...AWSOME movie and will read the books, for sure!
Only problem: teenaged girls behind me saying "OMG, I love her shoes" as Katniss steps accross the stage to take her sisters place...Really? Is this all the kids got from the story? Obviously English teachers aren't doing their job...nor are HISTORY teachers!!! Yikes!

i think it's about how the love you have for a person can't go away even through hardships and death, in other words Katniss' love can survive through the pain and sorrow of the Hunger Games.
Just what I think:)

I think it's about Katniss is general. When i hear this song I see her singing this to Prim, Rue, and Peeta. The song (I think) is in her perspective, telling all of her loved ones when this is over they'll all be safe and sound.

well i think its refering to peeta when she tries toget his medicine inthe hunger games. she could also be singing to rue while she is dying.because rue loved music.i guess i can see a bit of it being sang to prim but not really
anonymous Mar 30th 2012, 10:15 report
i think the first line is refering to prim "I remember tear streaming down your face when i said, i'll never let you go" and then "when all those shadows almost kill your light" could be peeta's hijacking, and the corus makes me think of rue. i think through out the song the reference switches.

The first verse this song can relate to Katniss’ promise of protecting Primrose on the day of the reaping and when she promises to come back safe from the Hunger Games when she volunteers for the reaping.
The second verse can also relate to Katniss and Primrose by Katniss telling Primrose to not watch her in the arena because of the fact Katniss might end up dying and how she wants her sister to remember all the songs Katniss sang to her when she was a baby or sick. Then the final verse can symbolise Katniss Telling Prim that she will be alright because it is Katniss going into the arena not Prim.

I personally think that Taylor wrote it before the hunger games came out and that it was for something totally different but the directors liked the song and put it in the hunger games. I maybe wrong but I maybe right. And i am obsessed with hunger games.

this is a haunting beautiful song with so much meaning behind your face.. it could be about rue or any loved one that has gone through a hard time and almost gave up.. ive been through the same thing.. i keep repeating it even though the tears are streaming.. love forever <3

I think that this song refers more to Katniss and Peeta, being in the Hunger Games, and Peeta is hurt and they are in danger. Look back to the book! This song contains quotes from the Hunger Games! "Don't leave me here alone", Peeta telling Katniss not to leave him and stay with him. There are more quotes, but I don't want to mention them all. This is the part that definitely says that its not Katniss and Rue: "When all those shadows almost killed your light". Shadows are often referred to as people, or forces against what's right. Obviously, the Hunger Games and the other kids. Light can be translated to life or hope. And the song says "almost". Then,"But all that's dead and gone and past tonight". Tonight? Dead and gone and past tonight? The night when Peeta was better, and he and Katniss were speaking and sleeping together. I'm a songwriter, and I use these tricks to give songs a meaning and touch people's hearts like this song does :D

She/someone must have felt very sad with a lot of tears rivering in a decline on her visage. There is no good synonym for "face". Someone like a man made her feel terrible and give her much pain. He deny it cuz he a big bully. Sardonically Said I'll Stay With You Forever and left. She didn't want to be left alone AT ALL. She love him. This song seems to be plugging The Hunger Games and the movie title alludes to a competition. No One Can Hurt You Now is him telling her that she has been just about AS harmed as a person can get emotionally, psychologically, mentally... (which hurts way worse than physically) .. She has been transferring through all of challenges as people called her names, ignored her &/or gave her the finger.. On and On.. Who is He? Maybe he is a Kitty & she is a Kat, but we know not. Yet, we HEAR this safe and sound sound annunciated in the lyrics by Taylor Swift.. SAFE means free from harm. SOUND has many meanings: Vibrations shouted from the throat area. A distinctive noise which can be HEARD by people and animals... A mental impression such as "I don't much like the SOUND of that Orwellian document you are hoping to force me to sign".. And to "Sound The Gong" as in warn a herd of impending danger... And of course SOUND as in sane/completely unbroken & exempt from damage, decay. Firm and unshakeable. He is telling her that everything is on fire and it's a war outside. The New York Times review said "SHE" was and I paraphrase as I quote, "starved into submission" which rings a soup bell for me. It isn't a picnic: LIFE. She is running and "relentlessly moving forward". She is "battered, bruised and deeply knowing as she moves through" her unknown life ahead of her which she doesn't have much control with but she IS in love with the mysterious man who this song sings about to me. He who has control. He wants to tell her that no one will hurt her now and she is free from any logical flaws... She has good judgement and she is levelheaded. She is worthy of confidence. Upright. Everyone is a liar to her right now so she is the only sound one she knows.. Sound can mean LEGALLY VALID. She will soon be sound.. Thoroughly and deeply too like a sound sleep. A sound can be the "air bladder of a fish" and I'm hoping this is NOT as what Taylor is referring. But I should lay off my judgement b/c this provides life for the fish. All of this is good news to the listener. Safe = Cozy and Sound = Good. We know THAT as we learn to comprehend the definitions in the English Language that are so verbose.
This song is ADORABLE as is Taylor Swift. We ALL must see The Hunger Games and if we can not actually see we should attend anyhow in order to hear the song in the movie parts. Thank you very much.. I am a currently unsound wordsmith.

I believe this song may be lullaby sung by Prim, mocking the promises Katniss made to keep her "safe and sound". I think this is Prim singing because throughout the novels, the only person Katniss never had wavering emotions towards was Prim. Katniss does everything in her power to keep Prim safe throughout Prim's life and even while she is being sent off to the Hunger games she promises to come back for Prim and keep her safe. It also seems likely that Prim is singing the song because in the music video Taylor Swift strongly resembles Prim as she was described in the novels. If this is really Prim singing about Katniss's promises to keep her safe, then is is extremely ironic because Prim dies a horrible death near the end of the story. It is Prim's spirit that is singing the song and, if I am correct about how deeply the lyrics are connected to the novels then this song may be based directly off a song Katniss sings in the last novel called "The Hanging Tree." In "The Hanging Tree" a man who was hung for murder tells his lover to come meet him at the hanging tree, and ultimately tells her to kill herself and join him, because death is much safer than life. So, in turn, Prim might be singing about how Katniss tried to keep her "Safe and Sound" however the only way to truly be safe in sound is through death. Prim may even be inviting Katniss to die with her as the man in "The Hanging Tree" did. This interpretation would strongly support the main lesson in the books, about the atrocities of war and how horrible, cruel, and selfish humans can be.Basically the song is representing how while we wage wars, the only way to be safe is through death.

Well if you remember the song Katniss sings to Rue this song is pretty close to that song she sings to Rue as she is dying. So I think it's Katniss singing to Rue.

This song is so amazing. Very intense and beautiful...
Absolutely the song that Katniss sings to Rue, as it has several of the same lyrics: "Safe and sound", "Just close your eyes", "The sun will rise", yadda, yadda...
But it could also be a dedication to Prim, Peeta, or Gale...
If this wasn't about the Hunger Games, I think it would be a promise to someone that they would protect and love them forever, no matter how much gets in their way.

This is an amazing song! So intense and touching...
I definitely think that this is the song that Katniss sings to Rue, as it has several of the same lyrics: "the sun will rise", "just close your eyes", "safe and sound", yadda, yadda, yadda... But I think that it could have some involvement with Prim and how Katniss was willing to take her place in the Hunger Games. Plus, it could just be a tribute to Peeta or someone else...
If it wasn't talking about the Hunger Games, though, I think it would just be about someone who's promising to protect someone else and love them no matter what.

If you have not read Mockingjay then: SPOILER ALERT! Nothing major, but...anyways. I know this is only for The Hunger Games and not Catching Fire or Mockingjay, but I could almost see this being sung at night while everyone was in the lower section of district 13 during the bombing in the second rebellion. Especially the second verse.

Well, I don't neccesarilly have an interpretation, but instead a question. What does she mean with the lyrics:"But all that's dead and gone and past tonight." It sounds as if she is saying that the "never let you go." stuff is over, but I don't know. Any ideas?
anonymous Mar 18th 2012, 17:57 report
okay, first of all 1.) This song is only about the FIRST book. Second, why would it be about the whole trilogy? It says hunger games in parentheses? Its about the first book, and its most likely about Katniss singing to Rue after speared in the stomach.
anonymous Mar 17th 2012, 22:58 report
I think this song is to Rue because it says Don't leave me alone in the lyrics and that is exactly the same thing Rue says to katniss when she was dying. Also it says No one can hurt you now and I think it means that Rue can be safe and sound and no one can hurt her anymore. I love this song!
