I guess this song could be perceived in different ways, because when I heard the song by itself, I thought I knew what it meant. But when I watched the video (with all the people holding up cards with their "secrets"), I realized it was more literal than it was figurative, if that was the way writers Tyson and Nick wanted the song to be interpreted.
In general, this song is all about the title: his dirty little secret. Which is, if you look at the lyrics, his not really liking his girlfriend at all, but he's probably too afraid/lazy to tell her.
Lyric pullouts:
1. "When I've known this all along. I'll go around a time or two, just to waste my time with you"
1. He's known he's felt that way for a long time. He's just not taking any action, and instead keeping it secret. Going around a time or two explains when he's riding in his car with his girlfriend--he's saying, 'oh, I'll just drive by the same places we already did, just so you think we're still hanging out just like the old days--even though, for real, I'm just wasting my time. I don't like you anymore.'
2. "I'll keep you, my dirty little secret. Don't tell anyone, or you'll be just another regret. Who has to know?"
2. Proof that his only intention is to keep it to himself, or all will come to disaster. Besides, 'who has to know'?
3. "These thoughts I can't deny...and now I have to lie...it's eating me apart...trace this life out"
3. The secret's apparently so dirty even he's having a hard time to handle it, and he's having to tell all these lies to cover up the truth. Because he's too afraid of the consequences.

The above is just a theory. Again, the song could probably be perceived in a few more ways. It depends on how you interpret the lyrics. ;)

So umm, I don't know if the other persons interpretation was right or what cause it kinda sounds like they got that informations some where. I don't know?
Anyways I always thought the song meant that some girl was his "dirty little secret" but he didn't want anyone to know about her because then it wouldn't be fun anymore. ("just another regret")
Meh, I don't know.

This song is obviously about a guy whos with a girl but he doesn't want anyone to know (I'll keep you my dirty little secret) and he wants her to keep a secret too (don't tell anyone or you'll be just another regret).

I agree with the earlier posts, I think it is about a girl that he wants to keep a secret, but I also think (If you watch the video, you might see this) that it is showing that everyone has their own "dirty little secret" and he wants her to be his.

This song obviously is about a hookup. One of them is in a relationship and is cheating on their boyfriend/girlfriend but there is something missing that they look outside for. The guy finds this girl and they decide to be friends with benefits..He tells her it will be there dirty little secret but she can't tell anyone because he doesn't want his girlfriend to find out or else they both will regret it.

Hey does anyone else but me think that this whole album is about a breakup, and what he goes through with the breakup. Just look at the songs, Dirty Little Secret, Stab My Back, Move Along, It Ends Tonight, Change Your Mind, Night Drive, 11:11 pm, Dance Inside, Top of the World, Straitjacket Feeling, I'm Waiting, Can't Take It. It sounds like a breakup to me. Message me if you have any info on this please!!!!

The Song is based on a series of books. Those post cards with secrets on them were submitted by real people to an adress I can't recall right now. Thousands of people send in these secrets about themeselves and they're put into these books and sold. There's three out right now. I plan on purchasing them. I have skimmed through the first one and seen most of the cards that are in the video. The books themeselves are actualy very touching and cute at the same time. Mind you real people send these in with real secrets in them. The post cards in the video are the real postcards sent in. The song was based off of the whole Secret Post Card thing or whatever.

This song can have some multiple meanings, but what makes the most sense to me is that this guy is in a relationship he shouldn't be in. "Let me know that I've done wrong / When I've known this all along" is perfect for that, as is the chorus. He's telling his girlfriend that he'll be sure to keep their love a secret. The song really doesn't say why he can't be in love with her, or maybe it's just the physical aspect of it that's off-limits - "I go around a time or two / Just to waste my time with you" and "Find out games you don't want to play" make it pretty obvious that there is sexual contact going on. The bridge even suggests him trying to confess that he can't be with this girl, but he loves her too much ("These sleeping dogs won't lie / And when I try to lie / It's eating me apart, trace this life about").

i think this song is about that a boy and a girl who might have had sex and been together while he was seeing someone else. because he sounds as if he regrets doing it and the girl still wants to be with him and he can't handle it and isn't sure what to do.

I think it's about a guy who was with one girl and then there was another girl that he wanted on the side (I'll keep you, my dirty little secret) the girl on the side was ok with it and knew about it, he didn't want anyone to know (don't tell anyone, or you'll be just another regret) because if his g/f found out he was cheating it was over and he really loved his g/f but still wanted more... I know this from experience I'm going throught that right now... I'm the girl on the side.

I think the song is about a guy who is in a relationship already but he thinks it is a waste of time and has found another girl that he really likes and wants to be with but his girlfriend is still really in love with him. It also sounds like he is talking to one of his friends or the girl he likes and telling them this but saying you better keep my dirty little secret a secret or you'll be just another regret. There are and could be many different meanings behind this song but that's just what I think.

Good interpretations guys but I always it meant that everyone has some dirty little secret and they trust it with someone so we all have someone in are lives we trust more then anybody else and we hope they won't ever reveal or they'll be a regret to have in your life then again maybe I'm being retarded.

I think that it's about a guy or a girl who's unpopular but is in love with a popular girl and they both are crazily in love but if anyone finds out the entire thing will be too annoying to handle and they won't be able to take it...
Or It could be like Romeo and Juliet where If anyone finds out they're both screwed... lol

This is basically what the guy I was seeing said to me. "don't tell anyone or you'll be just another regret". This is about cheating on someone or being with someone that you shouldn't be with.

Ok what the heck? Why do most people interpret this song as a guy dating a girl kind of thing and keeping secrets from each other. Look titles can be decieving. The way I interpret the song (after watching the video)just from this one line "I'll keep you my Dirty little secret" Seeing as there holding postcards about there secrets and stuff like for example a mate is holding up a postcard saying "I pee in the sink" Isn't that a little awkward and dirty? So of course you'd want to keep it a secret. People keep secrets of things there ashamed of or things they keep pent up. Watch the video it'll make sense.

The song Dirty Little Secret explains the book Post Secret...written by Frank Warren. If you watch the music video, it has random statements, secrets, on note cards/post cards. The song Dirty Little Secret is talking about how I guess he is talking about his secret...maybe he sent in one to post secret, and he is trusting that his secret with stay anonymous. This is what my cousin told me. If you just read the book Post Secret, then you will understand.

I think This song is about a guy wanting to break up with a girl because he doesn’t like her anymore, but is just too afraid to tell her that he wants to break up, so he just keeps it his dirty little secret. The line “…just to waste my time with you" proves that he doesn’t like her, but doesn’t want to suffer the consequences of telling her that he wants to break up, or is too afraid.

Videos are just somebody's way of marketing a song, not necessarily what the song was written about. Frankly I believe it is about him being involved with a woman he wants to keep secret. Speaking as the other woman, the man I am involved with does just what he describes in the lyrics... go around a time or two Just to waste my time with you. He'll drive around his neighborhood multiple times just so that he can waste time so he can continue to talk to me. I'm his dirty little secret and this is my ringback tone for him.
