it also seems like he was with his old girlfriend for a long time--- "the notes are old, they bend, they fold." the lines "did you think that I would cry on the phone? Do you know what it feels like, being alone?" are almost like him saying that being alone is a pain beyond tears. "days swiftly come and go. I'm dreaming of her. She's seeing other guys--- emotions they stir. The sun is gone. The nights are long. And I am left while the tears fall." he must really miss her. Those stirring emotions are probably sadness and/or jealousy. "the sun is gone" might be interpreted as 'it's not the same without her.' sorry if this is really rough or doesn't make sense, it's my first interpretation. Hehe.
