This entire song is about tripping on a strong hallucinogen, people look strange when you are tripping, it also refers to faces coming out of the rain, which happens when you trip...it also says streets are uneven, jim is trying to explain how weird humans are, and how you can realize this by tripping on a strong hallucinogen

Why is it that everytime you people don't know what the song means, so it's GOTTA be about drugs, right???

I think this song may actually have some reference to drugs, i.e. "when your strange" & "roads are uneven when your down" but I also think it is about being with people yet being alone at the same time.

Actually, the song was thought up when jim was suicidal and his friends tried to calm him down. He went to calm his nerves by taking a walk. Walking around contemplating everything he sees people going about their daily life that he doesn't know, and they don't know him. "faces seem ugly, when your alone."he was around a lot of people, but he was by himself and didn't care about the 'ugly faces' around him. "people are strange, when your a stranger" means that two people are complete strangers and you know nothing of them so they appear strange to you.

Genearlly it's a song he wrote when he was depressed.

Anyone who has tripped on hallucinogenic drugs will know that is what this song is about. When you are tripping and in the rain you will tend to see faces.

One word DEPRESSION. The feeling of the whole world is against you and feeling alone and no one understands how you/he feels. I also believe it shows some of Jim's paranoia. A lot of gifted people like Jim have a lot of emotional problems.

The song is written around the line 'When you're strange, people are strange'. This was the product of realization by Jim, when he spoke with a friend about his depression. He thought of the line, and wrote the song later that evening.

I love this song because we are all strange, you, me,not just the faces in th rain.

Try living in Douglas County in Oregon....Talk about strange, so many people do drugs they are all, well strange.

Granted Jim Morrison did a lot of drugs, but he did know people, very well.

This song is written in a depressive mood, which seems to obviously show that Morrison was in fact depressed. But the fact that drugs and depression commonly go hand in hand also seems to make this a song speaking of both. This is just like any of Jimi Hendrix's sad songs, its just sad poetry from a depressed artist who enjoys using drugs too much. And I must say, the line about streets are up even when your down vividly reminds me of a time when I was driving while tripping....this song does make drug references!

I've always thought it to be about the comedown of drugs and the paranoia that people can experience. Having (unfortunately) experienced similar myself I can say the lyrics sum up the feeling brilliantly.

This is by far one of my fav doors songs....the song has nothing at all to do with drugs....Jim Morrison yeah was heavy into psychedelic...but he never used drug reference in his songs..his song were about love mostly death poetry an his family troubles as a kid....its amazing how little the human brain goes...you see 1 thing about about lyrics an you jump to drug use...so I'm guessing LIGHT MY FIRE is about marijuana??? NO...I mean yeah..."girl we couldn't get much higher"....or maybe they where having a real intense sexual experience......peace love and acid.

sounds like it's about fame. the ugly side of fame. you can be on top of the world; everyone loves you. but one, one thing can change that and people turn "ugly". you see the cruel side of the world.

I think it is not so important whether it is written on acid or sober or whatever,it can be a feeling to anyone who is having that kind of state of mind,it is the question of existence,or maybe a day someone feels insecure or "small", simply one of very human emotions that for most of us is familiar.

i think the songs about isolation from other people, and the feeling of being an outcast compared to the rest of society. im sure it could have other meanings and interpretations but the basic idea is one of social rejection. the song reminds me of a kind of 'lonely hero'-type character, which i think jim certainly was
