I understand this song to have a very deep meaning, in terms of life itself. Basically when he says why do I keep counting, they are trying to understand the motive that we keep track of time if we already know that the more time passes by, the closer we are to end, in other words, death. "And if all of our days are numbered. Then why do I keep counting?" They also mention that no matter what we do in life, good or evil, we never know if it will benefit the longitude of our lifetime in any way. "If I change my way of living. And If I pave my streets with good times. Will the mountain keep on giving?"

It's definitely to do with flying, but I think that there is something deeper, a second meaning. This song is near the end of Sam's Town, which, according to Brandon Flowers, chronologically listed the events of his life. Therefore I think this is about how The Killers have become so famous now, they need someone to 'help them get down', i.e. get out of the 'curse of fame'. Also, the 'Why Do I Keep Counting' has been missed out by everyone so far. This could be that he is now, either in a plane, and wants to know why he keeps counting his numbered days, and all the things that he won't be able to do if he dies on that plane. Metaphorically, however, this means that he wants to know how long he has till the fame will wither away and die by itself, and 'will I live to have some children', asking if he will ever get out of fame, so have a relaxed life with his wife.

This song is to do with more than death ,its a way of living and the choices his made - when he mentions seeing over the city wall and the trampoline - brandon like me - sees the shadow people - he has the special eyes, as he has dwelt and gone to a place - the mention in the end of the people checking if MARY (mother mary) earth - still goes round - cause its a long long way down :

the line - this town (darkness) was meant for passing through but it aint nothing new - I want to show t hem that the world stayed round -
man in red (devil)

I gathered this song to be about an addict. "There's a plane and I am flying" represents drug use "there's a mountain waiting for me" a metaphor no less... the plane would be his vice, the mountain: his demise. Using and succumbing represent "his" mountain (death...his crash). "Will I live to have some children" he wants to find his way and choose life. "Help me get down, I can make it" He's decided to turn it around and it will work this time.
