Plain and simple: a group of people who arent going to take the mistreatment or whatever, perfect rebellion or protest song.

This was a Yiddish to English translation of an old hymn that was sung in the jewish ghettos, and later in the concentration camps at Auschwitz and Krakau, Poland, during WWII. The lyrics speak out against the inhumanity of the Nazi regime against the jewish people.

Lore has it that one of Dee's childhood friends, Eugene Shlomo, introduced him to the song at the Bat Mitzvah of a mutual friend. Dee changed the original title from 'We're Not Going To Honor The Unjust Policies Of A National-Socialist Dictator Without The Due-Process Of A Democraticly Appointed Senate and Court System' to the more catchy 'We're Not Gonna Take It (...anymore)'.

Shortly thereafter a lone wolf howled, the south wind blew cold, I tugged on my beard and my hat fell off. The End.

This song came out in 1984, and the following year Dee Snider (song writer) stepped up and spoke eloquently for lack of censorship of music, in the lobby by politicians wives and others to impose censorship on much of rock music that they considered teenagers may listen to. I am not sure if Dee wrote this song knowing he would make a stand on this issue, or if the song itself has stood the test of time and become a rock anthem that metal heads still love, because Dee did not just talk the talk, but stepped out to show he believed what he sang and he did it in style.
