This song is pretty simple, as far as Vertical Horizon goes, and not hard to figure out. I see it as a sparse relationship (perhaps one-sided like a lot of their songs) that ended with the girl up and heading to another place, leaving the boy there anguished and confused. "The cities grow, the rivers flow, where you are I'll never know" is a good indication that he probably never saw her again... It's pretty clear with his questions and memories presented that he still loves her even though they'll be apart forever; hence the title and chorus. He regrets what mistakes he may have made, and what made this girl angry enough to get away from him, in "If you were right and I was wrong, why are you the one who's gone?" and also has a bit of recalling the enjoyment she seemed to get from seeing him sad.
