This is about a guy who absolutely adores his girlfriend. He realizes though that she could have better if she left him, so throughout the song he tries to convince her of that, hence:

"You're a god and I'm not and I just thought I'd let you go..."

He loves her enough to let her go and find true happiness; even though it will kill him inside, he's willing to do it for her because of how much he sincerely loves her.
