A knight was risen by a king? to protect his daughter from any harm or suffering. But the king also seems to fear his daughter in a way. The knight got a mystical power and swore an oath he didn't wanna break. But he fell in love with the daughter. The the king command to kill the daughter somehow and the knight is torn between his oath and his girl, so in the end he kills himself, telling the girl he'll always be by her side even though he's not there.

This screams Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb, to me. The child without a name grew up to be the hand To watch you, to shield you or kill on demand The choice he'd made he could not comprehend His blood a grim secret they had to command (Illegitimate son of a prince grew up to be an assassin for the royal family) He's torn between his honor and the true love of his life He prayed for both but was denied (He lost the girl he loved, as well as his honour, when he was thrown into prison and tortured to death) The curse of his powers tormented his life Obeying the crown was a sinister price His soul was tortured by love and by pain He surely would flee but the oath made him stay (He had a secret magic power that was despised and punished by execution; he swore an oath to his grandfather, the king, and was therefore unable to leave his situation).

This song screams of Vincent Valentine from Final Fantasy. His grim secret is his transformation into Chaos. His true love is Lucrecia. He's torn between her and his honor. So many of his dreams were shattered when Lucrecia practically "died" and he made so many sacrifices. He had to leave people behind. The curse of his powers (turning into Chaos) DID torment his life. His soul was tortured by love and pain (his love for Lucrecia). Of course, there are other meanings. I'm certain that Within Temptation didn't write this song as a biography for Vincent Valentine's life. That would be weird. But my other meanings are just a generic thing. A man has powers that he doesn't want to use for evil but is forced to. He falls in love with a girl, he has to sacrifice a lot throughout his life. The lyrics tell a story.
