Alice In Chains: Angry Chair Meaning
Angry Chair Lyrics
Angry walls that steal the air
Stomach hurts and I don't care
What do I see across the way, hey
See myself molded in clay, oh
Stares at me, yeah I'm afraid, hey
Changing the shape of his face, oh yeah
Candles...

This song is about layne's heroin addiction. It was killing him inside
and out. It is relating that to childhood punishment and his baf childhood. Layne was truly amazing. He was one of the last great singers now its all auto tuned pop. Too bad grunge abd the nineties was all before my time. I would of been two when he died:( -

I've heard from a lot of people that this song is actually about the death penalty. It's about someone who's regretting what they have done in the past and they are reflecting on it as they are getting ready to sit on the angry chair (aka the electric chair) this song is open to many interpretations though.

I was told by a friend that it was in this Angry Chair that Layne used heroin, and the needles were then thrown to the floor like darts...and one of his friends walked in and saw the scene, and made a comment like, " that is one angry chair"...

The song is about his heroin addiction. The angry chair represents the bathroom toilet. The word stomach hurts is referring to constipation caused by the use of herion or any opiate, but the part that clearly supports the idea of talking about his addiction is " I'm a dull boy work all day. Oh, so Im strung out anyway "

His father left when he was a child. This devasted him. In his last interview, he says during this time there were shadows everywhere. During the time of Facelift, his father found him, and used him for drugs.....saw my reflection and cried. He was his father.

I have listened to many this song many times and i never thought about what its meaning is. But after looking at the lyrics a few times, it is clearly about Layne's addiction. The lyrics "fields of pain is is where i graze, serenity is far away," is just one of the many lines that hints towards heroin addiction. To me he is saying that he was too young to realize what he was getting himself into, and now that he does know what he has done, he choose this life. "corperate prison, we stay, im a dull boy work all day, so i'm strung out anyway."

Dang-dog, the lyrics are not clear that he was beaten. Unhappy and mistreated for sure, But not beaten. My Father never beat me, but I got a stomach ache from the verbal lectures and yelling, but he never touched me.
"What do I see 'cross the way?"
He answers,
"see myself molded in clay" -

This song, like many grunge songs, only has one meaning that would make sense. This song was written by Layne, so many people would probably guess it's about heroin/drugs or whatever. But truthfully, the song is telling the gruesome tale of a young boy who is beaten and neglected (possibly raped) by his drug abusing father. The Angry Chair in the song is a nickname given by the boy, where his father would beat him, put him in timeout, or what not. The lyrics easily show this:
"What do I see across the way, hey"
The boy is afraid of what the future brings.
"Stomach hurts and I don't care"
The boy is afraid of what his father will do to him, but tries to overcome it.
"Little boy makes a mistake, hey"
This is the line that gives it away. The boy is explaining that he may have done something small (such as spilled a glass of milk or knocked something over) and being beaten unmercifully for it.
There are other lines further on in the song hinting at the meaning of this song. But those are some of the main "giveaways"
Layne could be singing of being neglected by his parents, or a friend getting neglected, or just a story he makes up. But all in all, the song is quite clear about a kid being abused, no doubt about it.
