Tom didn't say it was about leaving blink 182, he said it's about his friend who was going through ruough times with his girlfriend. He said she tore him inside out. And it killed him to see that. Personally, I think it is about a guy who has feelings for his male best friend, who is dating a girl who cheats on him. His friend is prioritising the girlfriend over him, even though everybody knows that she is cheating on him all the time. Thus, your best friend is not your girlfriend - the singer is slightly jealous, slightly hurt, and is hurting also because of the pain their friend is going through.

This song, is so relatable for me. It describes how I felt when I made out with my best friend once. I had known her for over a year back than and finally we were laying on my bed enjoying the moment. I felt amazing, we were having an awesome night,we were drinking, talking and getting really close. I remember her lips feeling so soft. I just absolutely loved her. But she just had to ruin it all by saying: 'This is so funny because we are just friends'

I may be Totally wrong, but here is my interpretation. This may be slightly screwed as I am going through something at the moment with a girl, it's not fun, and I find it eerily relevant to the song. So pretty much this guy really likes his best friend but that's all he is to her, is a best friend. He has slept with her and kissed and all that junk that you do with your girlfriend, but yet all she says they are is friends. She goes out and gets used by other guys, and cares about other guys, but not him. He sees it all and it kills him inside to know that all they are is friends, but he will keep some hope alive that it is a possibility that they may one day be "together". He is there for her when she gets "fucked up" an drunk, and then they sleep together. He hopes it means something but she acts surprised in the morning, saying it doesn't mean anything and it kills him to hear this but he goes alon with it trying to play it cool. He wants to be more, yet he can't be more or less than what he is because that's what she wants, yet he can't escape her. He will come back running to her if she needs it, doesn't like it, but he will. He cares about someone who doesn't care back, or in his hopes someone who isn't willing to admit that she cares back, just as he is afraid to admit that she doesn't care.

since when do interpretations have to be the actual facts?
i believe what jok said could be true on some level. if tom came out and told everyone his reasoning for the song then that's fine. thats why he wrote it. but people react differently to songs depending on their own situations in life. jok's explanation corresponds with my life so i like to think of the song in that interpretation. don't tell me im wrong because thats not what tom wrote it for. most people who write songs like this one dont expect others to understand the meaning behind it right off. otherwise they would just come out and say whatever it is thats on their minds. thats why people enjoy music so much; they're able to connect with it, so to speak. when i can make a connection to a song, it makes me feel better to know that i'm obviously not the only one with some kind of problem in life. music brings us together. its not meant to hold a definite meaning. -

Everyone understands that this song is about a guy who is in love with his best friend. The guy has watched her get hurt by other guys, and one night she comes to him drunk. She promises him they would be together and he lets her in (possibly into his house, or into his heart) and they get together. But after they both realize its wrong and now their friendship is destroyed. I could break it down more but don't really have the time now... This is what I hear...

Personally I feel that this song sort of tells a story about a guy who is turning to his friend for help after he just killed his cheating girlfriend. Starts off with the friend telling his friend "is this what you want where everybody acts without a clue, every little kiss and grin you gave was just a little bullshit I saw through" starts off with the friends response to the murder by acting without a clue than to his reaction how he could see that his friends relationship was fake and everything that they did was fake. "the alcohol is scented with your breath" obviously his friend is drunk turning to him for help after the murder. "you're always open up to just be used I'm waiting for excuses that deceive I'll meet you in the back to see then through" the friend is saying how she was using you and probably wasn't the first girl to do so and you finally stood up for yourself. I'm your friend so ill help you if you have an alibi. "how did I let her inside drip in sweat feeling alright your lips are the last thing being touch tonight your best friend is not your girlfriend" This is the boyfriend and what he was thinking while killing her, but in a way relief from her. Him comign the the conclusion that she is not his true friend."are you out of your mind you dug yourself into a liars hole" This is the friend saying how all the lies of the murder has put him in a really bad situation. "you made a little spark to live inside its now a fucking fire out of control" This inishal start of the lie was small but it has gotten completly out of control. The line "fucking fire" just emphasizes the problems this issue is causing. "and when the morning comes youll act surprised and when the word gets out it will get old." this is a flash to when the day of him getting caught for murder. at first he will say how did this happen and claim innocence. Eventually everyone will see you for what you are and not believe you, eventually they will stop caring. "and everyday youll try to live your life and every little scandal will unfold" When you are caught youll never be the same, everything that you are will come out.

This song can be interpreted many different ways. However, the beauty of well-written music is that it can mean something very special and personal for you, and something completely different to someone else, but be just as affecting to both people.
My best friend is a girl. When we first got to know one another, I was crazy in love with her, but she was just getting over a long relationship that went sour; she had no romantic interest in me. Her solution to the pain of losing her ex was to go on a rather long stint of one night stands. She actually lived with me at the time, and I had a front row seat to watch her get briefly into guy after guy and watch them use her.

I was astounded at how much I cared for her, despite that I knew she was making bad decisions, and I couldn't do anything to stop that, or to change her feelings for me.
Ultimately, I can't get the repeated line out of my head, because it speaks so well to me. I have always known I could take care of her better than anyone, and it hurts watching her continue to run off to other guys that treat her badly. More simply, it just plain hurts when the person you care about most isn't safe, with you.

Well there are many things this song could be about and unless your the person that wrote it, you will never actually know. I personally can't even listen to this song anymore because it makes me too upset. Its exactly whats been happening to me for a long time now and trust me it is the absolute worst thing that could happen. If you don't do anything your screwed cause you love them and it hurts every minuet your not with them. But if you do do something, you screwed cause it messes up your whole friendship. You do not want to fall for yore best friend I know what its like and it makes me nuts every minuet of my life.

Try reading through it as if the singer is sleeping with someone else's girlfriend (Sherrie) and is talking to himself or Sherrie the whole time except for the line "Your best friend is not your girlfriend" which he is saying to Sherrie's boyfriend. Kinda makes sense huh?
The song deals with guilt. Tom may have wanted to portray his guilt about the band breakup by comparing it to the guilt of cheating/betrayal. -
