the top interpretation is the one that is true. Adam is not a former band member you tools. the song is about a kid who wrote blink with his sad story of suicide. and it impacted blink so much that they tributed it to him, adam. That there is always a better way then suicide.

On the one hand I feel it's unnecessary me posting here, but on the other there are so many stupid interpretations that maybe I should clear a couple of things up.

Firstly, where the hell did people get this idea that Adam was a former band member? My particular favourite comment was the one that read "research previous blink182 members...Adam was the founder, he killed himself due to alcoholism and being kicked out by Mark and Tom". Scott Raynor is the only former member, there was no Adam.

Secondly, this whole "Adam's Letter" link to blink-182 is BS. If any of the morons spouting this rubbish that "Adam Krieger" was the influence for Adam's Song had actually clicked "enter" on adamsletter.com and gone to the about page, they would have seen the following statement:

"Adam’s Letter is a work of fiction. There is no such person as Adam, nor is the author aware of this sort of story ever happening in real life. And no, Adam Krieger was not the inspiration for Blink 182's song "Adam's Song," or vice versa. Any resemblance between the characters, places, and events to any real people is purely coincidental."

Unfortunately it's just yet another example of people seeing something and jumping to conclusions.

Oh, and Adam Krieger was a 17th century German composer :P

I used to want to kill myself.
Now I deal with it, in anyway, without self violence.

This song is unbelievable, it's about the desire for something more in life than just the same old shit every day for 'adam' and for blink. It's about the need to escape and the temptations of suicide as a method of this, however we see towards the end of the song that death is never the answer and that life has so much to offer and is worth living. That's my thoughts. blink 182 reunion 09.. can't wait

This song is referring to a person who is contemplating suicide by constantly dwelling on the past and wishing he can go back. In the first two verses, he talks about his life in the past tense. This shows that hes been dwelling on the past, and wishes to relive it: I never conquered, rarely came 16 just held such better days. Etc. This is repeated in the first 2 verses, and then there's the solo where he is actually seeing things in a brighter light. Right after that is the 3rd verse where everything changes to the future tense. He stops dwelling on the past, and hes moving forward, knowing tomorrow will be better. I never conquered when it came, tomorrow holds such better days. And forgets about committing suicide.

This song is very inspiring and helped me get through tough times in my life and I know how much a deep song can help get you out of loneliness.......just want everyone to know that suicide is never the way I have had many thoughts of it but there are always people who care even though you might not know it yet but they are always there

It may have to do with suicide but it has more To do with feeling isolated an ineffectual, I think the " I never thought I'd due alone" has more to with lonliness than suicide. You can evaluate your life without comiting suicide, song may have been inspired by that dudes suicide, it is about the issues that encorage suicide!

When I heard this song I cried. I've had some tough times and this song helped me a lot. It and a very close friend honestly convinced me to stop cutting myself because I know that one day it could go to far.

As we all have pointed out, the song was intentionally to be interperated as suicide is not the answer... but the great thing about music is that everyone sees the song in a different way.
another way to see it is its a song about growing up, and feeling alone. I live in the same area where members of the band grew up, and people are pretty hard to trust in southern california. Their talking about how on the surface its so easy to seem happy, "I laughed the loudest, who'd of known" but when your growing up, you realize all these horrible things about life that you never saw before. Its also clear to me that the narrorator of the song is suffering from depression.. Though he may want to commit suicide, he cant, "I traced the cord back to the wall, no wonder it was never plugged in at all". a lot of people in their teens think they want to kill themselve, but can't actually gring themselves to do it. "I never conquered, rarely caame, 16 held such better days, days when I still felt alive, I couldnt wait to get outside" I think he means that when he was younger he looked forward to being 16 and thought it would be the best, but when he actually was 16, he didn't live up to expectations and wanted to give up, but he also looked forward to growing up and graduating high school, and getting out in the real world where he could make a new life.in the end, he realizes everythings ok, when the "tour was over, I survived" maybe also interperated as when high school was over, he survived showing that everything worked out, and he could be happy again.

over, this song can be seen in many different ways- suicide, or maybe even the lonelyness and struggle of high school and growing up

I think Mark's vocals are about his overall failure in life, or rather the feeling of failure. Yes, he is a millionaire rock-star, but there are many failures in life. For example, "Remember when I spilled the cup of apple juice in the hall?". This is the stereotypical guilty failure. Everyone has done this as a kid, but we take it too seriously. And, "16 just held such better days. Days that I still felt alive". He feels like he has "died" inside for all the failures.

This song is currently reminding A LOT of people of Adam Goldstien (DJ AM), a god friend of the members of blink's, Death.

Of course the song is about suicide I didn't think that was even a question. It's about a fan who wrote a suicide note to his parents before offing himself. The letter was then sent to Mark Hoppus and the guys wrote the song. The actual song has nothing to do with the way he killed himself, it's basically the guy's way of saying no matter how bad things get there's always a better option than suicide, but many lines in the song do have some cool stories behind them. The song is truly amazing just like every other song the band has ever written. Listen closely and decide what the song really means to you that's what any musician really wants.

The song is not necessarily about suicide most of the song's lyrics are of that of a suicide note, but it's about a 17 year old kid dealing with depression and when you listen to the end it's about deciding against suicide that there is a bright world outside.

Clearly about suicide. "I'm too depressed to go on" That sums it up.
