Anthem of the Angels Lyrics

White walls surround us
No light will touch your face again
Rain taps the window
As we sleep among the dead

Days go on forever
But i have not left your side
We can chase the dark together
If you go then so will I

There is nothing left...

I think we all understand that this is about Ben's grandfather. However, i have a different interpretation from what he may have intended. When i listen to this song, I dont think of death, but depression. To me, it is a person who is trying to help another, who is losing themselves. it is a losing battle, and the person knows it, but still can't let go for the slim hope that maybe they will come out of it. Again, know it wasn't the original interpretation, just my own.

I think it's about sitting next to a loved one who has turned into a vegetable. Let me elaborate.

White walls surround us: They're in a hospital.

No light will touch your face again: Sunlight, the person won't leave the hospital alive.

Rain taps the window: It's really depressing.

As we sleep among the dead: The hospital, of course, is filled with dead/dying people.

Days go on forever: Days feel stretched out infinitely.

But i have not left your side: Despite the aforementioned, he's still waiting beside his loved one.

We can chase the dark together: They can both experience the unknown simultaneously.

If you go then so will I: Elaborating on the previous line, he struggles to see a reason to live in a world without his loved one.

There is nothing left of you: The loved one is a vegetable.

I can see it in your eyes: His eyes are void of emotion.

Sing the anthem of the angels: ????

And say the last goodbye: This is the last time you will leave this person.

Cold light above us: It's a surgical light.

Hope fills the heart and fades away: They think they might be able to save him, and realize they can't.

Skin white as winter: The Vegetable's skin is pale.

As the sky returns to grey: As their hope fades, things quickly become as depressing as before

    Days go on forever
But I have not left your side
We can chase the dark together
If you go then so will I

There is nothing left of you

I can see it in your eyes

Sing the anthem of the angels

    And say the last goodbye

I keep holding onto you: He doesn't want to cut life support.

But I can't bring you back to life: How ever, he probably should pull the plug as the person is hopeless.

Sing the anthem of the angels

    Then say the last goodbye

    You're dead alive (x4): The loved one's a vegetable.

There is nothing left of you

I can see it in your eyes

Sing the anthem of the angels

    And say the last goodbye

    I keep holding onto you

But I can't bring you back to life

Sing the anthem of the angels

    And say the last goodbye

Sing the anthem of the angels

    And say the last goodbye

Sing the anthem of the angels

This song makes me go back to my late grandmother, she was everything to me and she passed from breast cancer. But I remember the times leading up to her passing. Lines like "theres nothing left of you, I can see it in your eyes." Makes me feel how it was to see her because she just wasn't there. I stayed by her side as much as possible and even though she couldn't talk back, I would sit and talk with her, and those were the rare times she would actually open her eyes and look at me, but when I looked into her eyes, they were dull and gray, not much left in her. "White walls surround us, no light will ever touch your face again" I knew deep down that she wouldnt be here much longer, and she was in hospice. "Sing the anthem of the angels, and save your last goodbye." That one is a hard one because I wasn't able to be there when she passed, and I really wanted to be by her side when she left this world. The night she passed, I had a dream that I was on a bus, she got on and sat next to me. She grabbed my hand and told me that she couldn't be here anymore, but she wanted to let me know that she was ok now, and that she didn't feel any pain anymore. She kissed me on the cheek and told me she loves me and then faded out. I see where depression could play a part, because it hit me hard, and it took me a long time to accept it and try to keep going, I secluded myself, lost all will to keep going, and even tried to get out of this world to be with her again, but realized that was a selfish and cowardly escape. Even now, it still hurts, and always will. I love this song, but that's my interpretation of it and the reason I can't listen to it very much, it makes me miss her so much and i just break down and cry.

My own interpretation is probably not what the song is about, but it broke me when I went through a miscarriage and lost my little Phoenix...

I think this song is how a guy would feel if he was dating an emotionally dead person.

[There is nothing left of you. I can see it in your eyes.]

The person they're dating isn't the same anymore. Things have changed between the couple so much so that the guy feels like the other person has nothing of their old self within, and that they'll never be the person they once were.

    [You're dead alive]

The person they're dating is completely dead inside, emotionally. Just a living shell of The person they once were.

This song sticks in your mind! It IS sad, but even more sad is the obvious indictment of public education. Losing, not LOOSING-funeral, not FUNNERAL- felt, not FEALT & NEVER end a sentence with an adverb! Impersonal, not IMPERSONALLY, as it is at the end of the sentence.

i hate all of your translations, when i read them they seem so cold and far away.. they are true but putting words to them and reading them from someone else's perception seems impersonally.
if you feel, really feel what they sing about, don't comment about them. beacasue some of us that feel them, will feel the tearing of their hearts reading them.
kindy why we search the song of this kind.
though we are a stupid brand, we want to know what other people think and bask in their belifs, only to fuel our depression.

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

I agree with all the above post and so sorry for Ben's loss of his grandfather. After my 3 year old son died I have a different interpretation of the line "We can chase the dark together~ His death took me to a very dark and lonely place. If you go then so will I ~ A part of me died right there with him that day. And the line Rain taps the window: It's really depressing. That is spot on BLOODRAGED189!!

I think it's about someone loosing themselves due to a tradgedy i.e. fighting in a war or loss of a loved one "There is nothing left of you i can see it in your eyes". The person is dead to Ben/the person singing that's why it's set in a hospital/morgue "White wall surround us" "As we sleep among the dead" anyway you think about it it's still a really sad song

If anybody that is crazy about this band knows, that Ben lost his grandfather right before or right around the time of him writing new songs for Dear Agony. I think its about him loosing his beloved grandfather. I think this is pretty close to myself because a few weeks before the release of this album I too lost my grandfather that I was very close to. If you look in the album booklet on the last page is a in memory of for his grandfather. I know I keep repeating myself but, I think a lot of the songs that sound like hes mourning is because of this. That and one of Ben's biggest phobias is of death and dieing.

This song is so sad. Everyone has experienced loss, so we all know how it feels to wait in a hospital room for someone we love to pass. The song puts words to the experience.

    The song hints of sucide.

"We can chase the dark together

I agree with pinkbutterfly, like "Days go on forever, but I have not left your side." refers to despite how painful it is living in a room for a few days with your loved one dying next to you. "White walls surround us." refers to a hospital. "...as we sleep among the dead." refers to them sleeping in a hospital full of the dying.

    To me this song is about a man sitting by the side of his Wife/girlfriend or even a very good friend dying in the hospital and her saying thier goodbyes to him or the "angels" and maybe even him saying if you die so will I. its very sad and emotionaly moving for me :{
