Colin Hay: Overkill Meaning
Overkill Lyrics
I can't get to sleep
I think about the implications
Of diving in too deep
And possibly the complications
Especially at night
I worry over situations
I know we'll be alright
Perhaps it's just imagination
Day after day it...

It's about my typical night, where my brain won't shut off. It's re-addressing of worries, concerns and issues of life smacks of overkill. Implications, complications all surface - or is just ones imagination? Worrying over situations? It's just overkill. Brilliant lyrics that reflect real life for us "worst casers." And as we finally reach exhaustion, and perhaps, slumber, ghosts of those worries and fears appear, then fade away, away, away... zzzz.

Yes, a fab song... I believe he's talking about what some people call "doing the head-miles" - when your mind is running around in circles and you can't shut it off and tune out. His sheets are soaked in perspiration, and his heartbeat "shows the fears, ghosts appear and fade away..."; his thoughts are racing in and out of different things, and he can't shut down. He's worried about the "implications" possibly means he's worried he's going mad, or afraid that what he is worried about is actually true... In short, a song about an anxiety attack, I believe.
