Creed: Higher Meaning

Song Released: 1999

Higher Lyrics

When dreaming I'm guided to another world
Time and time again
At sunrise I fight to stay asleep
'Cause I don't want to leave the comfort of this place
'Cause there's a hunger, a longing to escape
From the life I live when I'm awake
So let's...

The song is about him wanting to go to heaven. "Can YOU take me higher, to a place with Golden streets"

"YOU" meaning god, becuase he says To place with golden streets, asking to a place with golden streets.

"Although I would like our world to change
    It helps me to appreciate
    Those nights and those dreams
But, my friend, I'd sacrifice all those nights
If I could make the Earth and my dreams the same" He wants the earth to be like what he dreams it to be.
    "The only difference is
To let love replace all our hate
    So let's go there
    Let's make our escape
    Come on, let's go there
    Let's ask can we stay?"

He wants to go to heaven and escape from the earth. he wants to ask if he can stay.

    "Can YOU take me Higher?
To a place where blind men see
    Can you take me Higher?
To a place with golden streets"
He is asking god to take him higher
    into heaven.

I am new here. This song was brought to my attention the other day by an above comment and it caused me to reflect on my life over the past several years.

One day over a year ago I tried to tell many people I know and love that I was being abused. They didn't believe me (because they were the ones abusing me). They sent me to a mental institution and told me that I needed to "get well". Getting well to them meant that I needed to realize that nobody had been abusing me. They wanted me to believe it was all in my head, hence they called me "delusional". Many of the people who have caused me severe pain and suffering are friends/enemies/loved ones. They obviously were hoping to cause a downward spiral for me. Each time they have thrown mayhem and chaos in my direction, I rise above. Every day that I survive their hurtful plot (the deep hole) I get "higher". I have no secrets. I have no shame. I have always understood that I played a role in the traumas I have endured. I have been honest about it all and have accepted responsibility for my part. I have told the truth, time and time again. I have tried many times to get answers to no avail. My prodding and questions are always met with deception and lies. The stone-cold truth is that I didn't "make up" what happened to me. It has been very real and it has been incredibly brutal and painful. When I was in the mental ward for months (because I had been abused) I found a Buddhist lesson/poem that was interesting to me. (I have changed it a bit in order for it to work well with my life.)

    1) I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in. I am lost...I am hopeless.
    It is partially my fault*.
It takes forever to find a way out.

    2) I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don't see it. I fall in again.
I can't believe I'm in the same place.
    It is partially my fault*.
It still takes a long time to get out.

    3) I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there. I still fall in...it's a habit
My eyes are open; I know where I am.
    It is partially my fault*.
    I get out immediately.

    4) I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
    I walk around it.

    5) I walk down another street.

To me, the above poem and this song have some similarities. Walking down another street (in the poem) and walking down golden streets (in the song) are both about forgiveness and new beginnings. First, I have to forgive those who have harmed me and I am working on this. It is many people. I also need to forgive myself for my faults, mistakes and shortcomings. I try to remember the important Buddhist discipline: A truly compassionate attitude toward others does not change even if they behave negatively. I have forgiven myself and I believe in my heart that I can forgive the others. So the dilemma I have is my new beginnings.. Must I now avoid these friends/enemies if they, in a sense, helped me fall into the deep hole in the street? I know it is not possible. I needn't avoid anyone because our existence is connected and we are all interdependent beings. The Dalai Lama explains interdependent origination as "all things and events, including our experiences of suffering and happiness, arise from the coming together of a multiplicity of causes and conditions". I once read an old Russian proverb that the definition of "absentmindedness" (which means- without mind) is, "searching for the horse you are riding". Quite possibly, I fell into the "deep holes" because I was looking down and searching for the horse I was riding. I have been training myself...

The Dalai Lama says that we should thank "our enemies" because they are the best teachers of all. He says that our enemies are "indispensable because their actions will help us to develop a tranquil mind". Each time they hurt us, we are able to transcend the pain a little bit faster. After years of suffering and learning from the pain we are able to not only cope, but experience a rebirth. We emerge "new" and different, much stronger and peaceful beings. Pain and suffering is a transformative process/cycle. The golden streets are the "place where blind men see". At this level we of course are still on our horse, but we are not searching for him. We see (meaning understand) our enemies actions no longer carry the weight to impact us adversely. We are all connected and interdependent yet now we understand that our enemies can do anything to us. We will simply continue to rise into a higher realm.

I believe the golden streets are about non-dualism. They exist in my sound and free mind, as I rise above the chaos, pain and suffering to experience a sense of freedom and floating. It is a tranquil euphoria of peace and enlightenment. I am "higher" because, in a sense, I am now one with the horse I am riding. Bring a deep hole or a mountain or a river or any obstacle, I will only get higher.

Reminds me of a song by JJ Cale called, "Ride Me High".

Scott did NOT write this about "Heaven" or smoking pot. In the September 2000 edition of Spin magazine, he explained that this is is not about Christ's ascension to heaven or taking a big bong hit, but is about the power of lucid-dreaming: "You're physically asleep, but you're awake in your mind," he explains, he read a book about Hindu monks who have perfected the technique and thought it might help him stop a recurring nightmare in which he's running down a highway, being closely followed by a man with a gun. He turns left and hides behind a pillar beneath an overpass but gets shot anyway. Scott said that once he learned how to lucid-dream, he was able to alter the nightmare so that he turned right and escaped. After he wrote "Higher" about the experience, he never had the nightmare again.

( I feel what he is saying is that he is tired of living in fantasy (all the women) and want's his dreams with this one person he believes he can't have become a reality. He would sacrafice all for it just to be real with her. So he is asking her to go with him and let's get rid of this hate and become healed so we can love and live in reality.)
~ A different way of looking at it) But then at the end of the video I started to think something different who knows.

I think it's about a relationship he want's to be in with someone special but the pain and anger they both feel from past experiences keeps them from the relationship..As you see in the video a women talking to him and he doesn't even acknowledge her existence, maybe he is tired of the player mentality and wants something real..He's asking can we escape from all the anger that keeps us stuck here..And go to a place that's higher, I believe what he is asking for is to feel love again, he's asking for god's help and asking the special women "Can we go there together?"

It says GOLDEN streets just like the BIBLE. And blind men only get their sight back in heaven. Duh! Scott Stapp is kind of a religious/rock kind of man. I THINK HE ROCKS. HIGHER IS MY FAVORITE SONG!

I know the song is about heaven because in the lyrics, if you listen, it says "Can you take me higher, to a PLACE WHERE BLIND MEN SEE, Can you take me higher, to a PLACE WITH GOLDEN STREETS." blind men never get their sight unless they go to heaven. And in the bible, heaven is supposed to have pearl gates and GOLDEN streets.

I think this is a great song. The way I interpret it, it is about scientifically controling your dreams. He talks about ecscaping the life he lives while he's awake, clearly saying tht he is talking oabout dreams. He also talks about visiting the wonderful place time and time again and again. He also says he would give up asll his dreams if he could make his dreams and his life the same. Showing that he desires the quality of life he lives in his dreams. In short this is an awesome song. CREED=GOD ROCK THAT REALLY ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!1

Actually I made an AMV with this video using the movie Final Fantasy Advent children. Anywho, the song is about escaping the realities the daily world that we live in and seeking to attain the dreams the person wants. Of course, he's asking God..."can you take..." who can give those things to us...and make them attainable.
    This song is awesome!

I think he's asking the fans to take him to a state of nirvana, happiness, euphoria...If you look at the video it seems like he's asking the AUDIENCE to take him higher. Like a drug high, except a natural high.

This song is bout how he wants God to take him higher. "To the place where blind men see", as in he want to be where nobody else can go unless you are with God.

The first time I heard this song it kinda puzzled me because blind men that's see and golden streams are only in heaven so idk if he says he wants to be in heaven or what...???

OK. So maybe he was religious, but I don't think it's really about heaven. I think maybe everything in his life is not going exactly as planned, but his dreams are his and he can ignore the real world. Maybe his love isn't going well. Maybe they're fighting. Maybe this song was written out of desperation because he feels there is nothing left he can do for his love.

When dreaming I'm guided to another world
time and time again (re-occuring dream)
at sunrise I fight to stay asleep (just like most of us, when we awake after a good dream or even a good night sleep, we fight the day)
'cause I don't want to leave the comfort of this place
'cause there's a hunger, a longing to escape
from the life I live when I'm awake (again we don't want to leave the comfort of the first light's thoughts, when everything seems clear and happy again)
    so let's go there
    let's make our escape
    come on, let's go there
    let's ask can we stay?

    Can you take me higher?
To a place where blind men see
    can you take me higher?
To a place with golden streets (here's where the twist to heaven comes in, scott had a lot of religion when he was younger, soo this re-occuring dream probably had a lot to do with heaven, but lets not forget, this song is about dreaming)

although I would like our world to change
    it helps me to appreciate
    those nights and those dreams
but, my friend, i'd sacrifice all those nights
if I could make the earth and my dreams the same (obvious lines here)
    the only difference is
to let love replace all our hate
    so let's go there
    let's make our escape
    come on, let's go there
    let's ask can we stay?

    Can you take me higher?
To a place where blind men see
    can you take me higher?
To a place with golden streets

so lets go there, lets go there,
    come on, lets go there
    lets ask can we stay?

Up high I feel like I'm alive for the very first time
set up high I'm strong enough to take these dreams
    and make them mine
set up high I'm strong enough to take these dreams
and make them mine (obvious once again)

    can you take me higher?
To a place where blind men see
    can you take me higher?
To a place with golden streets

    can you take me higher?
To a place where blind men see
    can you take me higher?
To a place with golden streets

Higher is aboput that the singer wants god to take him higher, meaning heaven because he wants to be with god.

What I think this song talks about is somebody getting a girl pregnant and how happy he is, yet he doesn't know if he's ready: "Well I just heard the news today It seems my life is going to change I closed my eyes, begin to pray Then tears of joy stream down my face...Well I don't know if I'm ready To be the man I have to be I'll take a breath, take her by my side We stand in awe, we've created life"

The main thing that makes me thing he got a girl pregnant is "we've created life" and there are other little hints in that section of the lyrics, and then I think he starts to talk about how he wishes his kid will turn out: "Welcome to this place I'll show you everything...I'll show you love I'll show you everything...I hope he's not like me I hope he understands That he can take this life And hold it by the hand And hold he can greet the world With arms wide open"
