This is a very personal song for Stevie. It is about a combination of things going on in her life, including the band, her friend Sara Recor and her relationship with Mick Fleetwood, but she considers "Sara" to be her alter-ego and her muse - the "Poet in her heart." Don Henley has said that he believes this is about an abortion Nicks had after he got her pregnant. They dated for about 2 years, and Henley thinks it is a tribute to the unborn child.

Sara is the name Stevie Nicks gave to the child she aborted that was fathered by the Eagles' Don Henley. The song has to do more with Nicks and Henley's relationship than anything else. The house she refers to in the song is referencing the house that Don was building at the time. Things were complicated between them, and she didn't think that he cared about being a father, so she chose to abort the pregnancy. Henley has said this in numerous interviews, and it appears to be quite an emotional subject for him. I think Stevie really did want a life and family with him, but things fell a part and the decision she made could not be reversed. She longs in heart for what could of been, and even though she doesn't have this child with her physically, she still carries it spiritually and emotionally. Haunting, yet beautiful song.

Stevie wrote the song Sara, and had a best friend and muse named Sara. it is said that around this time Stevie was in relationship with Mick Fleetwood but this ended when he became involved and later married Sara. I am wondering if she loved Sara on a very deep level, and then when Sara hooked up with Mick maybe Stevie thus writes "and now its gone", the references to building a house, might mean when Mick and Sara were planning to set up house? Another thing artists often do is attempt to express the emotions that those they are close to experience, so maybe she also could have been putting out some of the emotions that she felt Mick was experiencing in getting close to Sara but losing something of his connection with Stevie. Well that is all pure speculation, but the song is indeed lovely hearing a woman write lovingly about another woman.
