Some Nights Lyrics

Some nights, I stay up cashing in my bad luck
Some nights, I call it a draw
Some nights, I wish that my lips could build a castle
Some nights, I wish they'd just fall off

But I still wake up, I still see your ghost
Oh Lord, I'm still not...

I think he's knocked up his brothers partner and he's sharing the pain of living the lie about their child.

The only person that knows is the song writer, but the beauty of a well written song is that it can mean different things for different people based on their own experiences and expectations, I once read an article of a song writer about a profound song that was written, he said it was about a story he heard and sounded good, writers get inspiration from books/movies/people, even other songs, this song is passionate and to me is about personal struggle and choices between what we want and what we know to be right, this covers everything from war to love, and part of it is also pointing to fate, in that his sister, in my opinion, got sweet talked into giving it up and got pregnant but now has a much loved child. Thats what this song means to me and thats because of who i am, sometimes actually knowing the real reason a songwriter writes something can take away what the song means to you.

This song is about the war of life. When we are young, we want to rebel aainst everything, despite actually knowing what we truly want. if we get a cause, we'lljust fight for it. But then you get older, and you wish all the trouble and "War" would end, because you realize relationships are better than having nothing at all. and then you look back at your youth and see all the decisions you made and some you regret greatfully, but then you appreciate the big leaps you did take. And when we are young,we may possibly fall in love and things may turn sucky in the future, but sometimes the outcome is more beautiful than you think and all you can do is thank the past. i love this song and it just reminds me of one thing: HIGH SCHOOL. i plan on making a music video for this for the film festival at my school at the end of the year.

okay so i'm tired of people always getting the meaning of this song wrong. let me clear this up: this song is not about love (Mr. Ruess said so himself). i'm going to break it down:
"some nights i stay up, cashing in my bad luck, some nights i call it a draw." - some nights he thinks about all his mifortune. some nights he says fuck it all!
"some nights i wish that my lips could build a castle, some nights i wish they'd just fall off." - some nights he wishes that his music could get him rich and wealthy, or "build a castle", but some nights he doesn't want the fame.
"but i still wake up, i still see your ghost. oh lord i'm still not sure, what i stand for, oh, what do i stand for, what do i stand for? most nights, i don't know, anymore." - he still wakes up everyday, regardless of how bad/good the night was. he also still sees the old Nate, or as he puts it, the ghost of himself. he is not sure what he was born for, even though he was positive before all the fame.
"this is it boys, this is war. what are we waiting for? why don't we break the rules already?" - he is now talking to Andrew and Jack. they are now famous, so prepare for, "war." he is also saying why don't they just break the rules and have a good time since they're rich now.
"i was never one to believe the hype, save that for the black nd white, i try twice as hard and i'm half as liked but here they come again to jack my style, and that's alright." - he was never one to believe it when someone said fame was the best thing ever. he just loved writing music. he tries really hard but he's half as liked as other singers, yet they steal his own style. but it's okay by him.
"i found a martyr in my bed tonight, she stops my bones from wondering just who i am x3 oh, who am i?" - he is doing what he believes he should do, regardless of anyone says. he says it reminds himself of who he really is (a singer), but is that really what he wants? he is saying he doesn't know who he is anymore. he though he was a singer, but he doesn't want the fame that comes with it.
"well, some nights i wish that this all would end, cause i could use some friends for a change. and some nights i'm scared you'll forget me again, some nights i always win (i always win)." - he wishes all this fame would end, he's scared the people he loves will forget him eventually.
"but i still wake up, i still see your ghost, oh lord... (speed up) what do i stand for most nights i don't know, oh come on, so this is it? i sold my soul for this?" so when he says "sold my soul for this", i hate to think of it but i think of illuminati when he says this. selling his soul.
"washed my hands of that for this? i miss my mom and dad for this? no, when i see stars that's all they are, when i hear songs they sound like this one so come on, oh come on, oh come on!" - i miss my parents just for this? everything has no important now, songs seem the same, stars look the same to him.
"well, that is it guys, that is all, five minutes in and i'm bored again, ten years of this, i'm not sure if anybody understands." - that's all? this is what fame feels like? he is bored of it all already, just imagine 10 years of it all. he doesn't think anyone understands him.
"this one is not for the folks at home" - it is for famous people.
"sorry to leave mom i had to go" he's sorry he left his mom but he had to go.
"who the fuck wants to die alone all dried up in the desert sun?" he thinks he will die alone in the end. he is using war as an example of what he is going through, his fame.
he then uses his sister as an example of how he's been lied to.
"the other night, you wouldn't believe the dream i just had about you and me. i called you up but we'd both agree, its for the best you didn't listen, its for the best we get our distance, oh." its best he gets his distance from his family members, to get used to it.
and THAT, is the REAL meaning of the song.

I think that this song is about not knowing what it's all about; the song, life, everything. I heard an interview with the band, and I heard them say that it's about not knowing, and accepting the unknown.

Because the song is so beautiful, it can mean a different thing to everyone. That is why so many of my friends can connect so well to it, even though they all have very different interpretations.

I think it is just talking about a lot of different issues. I think it just kind of jumps around during each verse. I think it is talking about people joining the war for the wrong reasons, society lying to us, and his sister and nephew. I know because that's what it means to me.

Actually everyone is wrong... this song is about Nate going to the grocery store and seeing his sister buying some peach pie, so the peach pie was his nephew... I would know this because I am his usual grocery clerk, Mr. Bojangles.

I think the song could be interpreted many ways. My interpretation is that it means conforming to society and having doubts about the whole fairytale of life its self.. the 'con called love'? not being sure what one stands for... so this is it?

I see forbidden love here, maybe with someone who isn't available. He wants to make everything ok for her, but knows he is doing the wrong thing. I think the whole song is warring with himself as to whether it is worth fighting for. When he gets to the point where he thinks the whole thing is pointless, he looks at his nephew and realizes that some good things can come of bad. From there he decides it's best not to pursue things with his forbidden love.

"My heart is breaking for my sister and the con that she called 'love'
But when I look into my nephew's eyes...
Man, you wouldn't believe the most amazing things that can come from...
    Some terrible nights."

the con is someone that his sister called 'love' a boyfriend/husband/baby daddy or whatever. so his heart is breaking for her and what she has to put up with, but when he looks into his nephew's eyes he sees what can come from an awful relationship. and just because they were a mistake the child wasnt.

i know this because im not a total g-tard like the rest of you, idiots.

You are all fucking wrong! It means that Nate obviously had sex with his sister and she "terribly lied" about it when people asked who the father is. The son/"nephew" is the amazing thing.

I know this because I am Larry, the monster who lives under his bed, and I witnessed the incest itself.

Contrary to popular belief this song is actually about a war between commenters on websites claiming to be relatives and friends of artist, and how Nate once built a castle using only his lips and then gave birth to his own nephew and held him hostage. It turns out all along he was his nephew and his name is Tyler Durden, Nate has multiple personalities and it's all a metaphor for his deep suppressed suicidal feelings.
