Genesis: Land of Confusion Meaning
Land of Confusion Lyrics
Been haunted by a million screams
But I can hear the marching feet
They're moving into the street.
Now did you read the news today?
They say that danger's gone away.
But I can see the fire's still...

Well... It's obvious what the song is about. As is often the case, the art and entertainment community underestimate, and have an irrational fear of, certain politicians with a “R” behind their name. Guess what Mike – The President in your video made the world safer by standing up to tyrants and despots. Sometimes we need a strong leader to take bold positions and earn respect for his country and be feared by weaker leaders. I don't know... mayby by saying something like... “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall”

This song was written during the Regan Presidency and he points him out as well as many key political figures of the time. He's pointing out the political atmosphere at the time of fear (of the soviet union and other threats) that most people had at the time. Here in the U.S. we were in a recession, there was a gasoline shortage, and jobs were getting harder and harder to find. He's pointing out that most government leaders especially our own at the time was more concerned with war rather than making the lives of the citizens in their countries better. So it becomes the responsibility of the citizens to stand up and do it themselves.

This is a song about how man's ego inevitably gets in the way of any success he may have in an attempt to make the world a better place. Policial leaders delude themselves into believing that they have power that they really don't and end up making their children (and grandchildren) foot the bill for their mistakes and poor choices. They truly believe they are more important than they are and it hurts everybody who put them into their position and future generations who didn't.
Social leaders are slowly losing their (good and bad) influence because people are getting fed up with the collateral damage being created as a result of their hatred and violence-thank you newscasters for trying to manipulate the truth.
Media figures, including performers and entertainers, are some of the worst people to have as examples what what to do and be, and yet because people look at them as idols and heroes, they are the ones shaping our future, whether they realize it or not.
There is no accountability on any level for any of these people. They never have to pay the price for what damage they've done to people. The worst part? Now people are so confused and disillusioned, they aren't even seeing the world as having the value of a place worth living in, let alone fighting for. Everybody has started to see life as a self-centered experience because anything else is a waste of time.
This song is begging people to get back on track in their perspective when it comes to humanity and social, moral obligations we have towards each other.
