Clint Eastwood Lyrics
I got sunshine, in a bag
I'm useless,but not for long
The future is coming on
I ain't happy, I'm feeling glad
I got sunshine, in a bag
I'm useless, but not for long
The future is coming on

I believe this to be a very spiritual song and how current societies are doing nothing but detaching us from who we really are through judgements which creates fear. Finding your inner self is the first step to spiritual enlightment and the first step to change the way the corrupt world is - one person at a time....hear me out...
"Finally someone let me out of my cage
Now, time for me is nothing because I'm counting no age
Now I couldn't be there
Now you shouldn't be scared
I'm good at repairs
And I'm under each snare
-This is a clear reference to a spiritual guide(counting no age, time is nothing in the spiritual world). This guide is an intangible being, so he cannot be here but is good at repairs (AKA mental and physical healing) Listening to your inner self through meditation is a great way to let your spiritual guide "out of the cage"
"Who you think is really kickin' tunes?
Picture you gettin' down in a picture tube
Like you lit the fuse"
- Television(picture tube), controlling us by making us want to be like the people on TV, (pop culture), yet we still believe we have complete free will (who do you think is really kickin tunes)
"You think it's fictional
What appears in you is a clearer view because you're too crazy
To know the definition for what life is
-This control detaches people from themselves and into a FICTIONAL world, when really, we are the real thing(fear mongering- terrorism is everywhere!! right?). The outcome is a clear view of how crazy and lifeless we are yet we all think the we know the definition for what life is. This new found spirituality maybe mystical but spiritual is hearable.(listen to your guide- a spiritual awakening is probobly what this person is experiencing)
"The essence the basics
Without it you make it"
-You are a co-creator of reality, through your thoughts- if you don't have it you make it.
"You have it or you don't that's a fallacy
I'm in them
Every sprouting tree
Every child apiece
Every cloud you see"
-To think you have it or don't is a complete fallacy, because, as a co-creator of reality, you have everything you ever need in the HERE and the NOW. Everything is ONE(there is no separate between anything in the universe, only the illusion of separateness)- in every sprouting tree, child apiece, and every cloud you see. You and the guide are an integral part of everything you see and experience. This goes for every being on the planet.
"Through Russ, though not his muscles but the percussion he provides
with me as a guide
But y'all can see me now because you don't see with your eye
You perceive with your mind
That's the inner"
-Destruction, demise, corruption in disguise- the power that are in place who are constantly fear mongering and telling us how to live. Now through russ's (russ symbolizes anyone in a spiritual awakening) "percussion" (thoughts), and not his muscles...with him as a guide...humanity will begin to see how things really are and stop seeing with their eyes, and start perceiving with their mind(brain)..."thats the inner"- your inner spiritual guide helping with your spiritual awakening
"Remember where the thought is
I brought all this
So you can survive when law is lawless
Feelings, sensations that you thought were dead
No squealing, remember
(that it's all in your head)"
-Remember where your thoughts are-
"I brought all this", you are creating the reality you want through perceptions..so you can survive when law is lawless- society is changing rapidly- many of societie's institutions that have been controlling us for so long are being critisized and will collapse in our lifetime...IE- massive organized religion, schooling systems, oppresive governments (including USAs!)... feeling sensations that you thought were dead- spiritual awakening and a paradigm shift in society will create new feelings we haven't had since children (loss of judgement- garbage man was no less than a CEO!, unconditional pure love etc)... no sqealing, remember that its all in your head....dont worry about a thing, everything you know and experience is a complete manifestation of your thinking which happens to occur in the head!
MOST IMPORTANTLY- IF YOUR STILL READING--
"ain't happy, I'm feeling glad" -
hes not happy, but he has moments of feeling glad (temporary fixes either thru drugs, materialism, nurturing self ego)
"I got sunshine, in a bag" -
sunshine is the reason we have life and creates life,- we all have this "sunshine" effect on the earth(co- creation of reality), within our bag (our mind or head)
"I'm useless, but not for long"-
after a spiritual awakening he is no longer going to be a useless being
"The future is coming on" -
the new way of thought is coming on--a new age.
-THIS IS A VERY SPIRITUAL SONG, WITH NEW AGE CONCEPTS- that's my interpretation and I'm stickin to it! Please though, tell me if I'm way off the cliff here...

If anyone knows the actual stroyline of Gorillaz you'd know
2d is always on pain killers because of his punched in eyes
"glad" is a term to described high. "I aint happy, I'm feeling glad" is saying he doesn't like having to take them. While 2d sings about not liking his drugged up life, Del the ghost is singing about how he was able to quit drugs and how people on drugs don't perceive anything and let there life fly past them
anonymous May 27th, 2007 5:15pm report
I think that "I ain't happy - future is comin' on" definitely has to do with some kind of drugs, but to me the idea is mainly not being on top of yourself. like, lacking ambition or motive, but also looking toward your future to have some sort of drive. for the time being tho, there is none, so he is 'useless' and he 'aint happy'. kind of like when your rooms a mess and your just being lazy, but you do plan on eventually cleaning it, but right now you suck at life and your just fed up with your messy room and not being able to see your floor n shit.
When del tha funkee homosapien starts, "finally someone let me outa my cage." I think that shows that he feels he is someone who has overcome this mindset, or you could say he got off his ass and cleaned his room.
He randomly says "intangible" because I'd say he means that his message and way of thinking isn't something that is easily perceived or accomplished, but I'm not to sure of the word. "bet you didn't think so I command you to" goes without saying, but "panoramic view" is said because he thinks you should take a step back and reevaluate yourself from a different perspective. "look ill make it all manageable" is because the point of the rap is trying to help you metaphorically get into the right mindset for cleaning your room I guess, (im just sticking with that analogy because its simple and it makes sense)
The next couple of lines makes absolutely no sense to me but they are gorillaz and they are amazing and allowed to say whatever they hell they want.
The "hero who appears in you to clear you view when your too crazy" is either a way he defines himself, or something he is trying to bring out in you, like he's trying to help you help yourself.
"Lifeless, to those with definitions for what life is" I believe has to do with other people judging you and the way you live your life. I.e. a pothead that someone could just be like ew your a dumb pothead and you waste space on the earth, but that person probably doesn't even know what they're talking about and their not you so it doesn't matter.
"priceless, to you because I put you on the hype shit" I can't say I've ever heard anybody say hype shit before so I wouldnt know what it means, but I looks to me like its the course that he's trying to set you on, and its priceless to you, because it can change your life if you utilize it.
Then some more blah moments..
"allow me to make this, childlike in nature" is saying allow me to make all of this simple, like it already is, its just difficult to see just how simple.
"with me as a guide, y'all can see me now because you don't see with your eyes, you perceive with your mind" he's referencing how he's your guide again, and what was once before considered intangible, is now tangible because your now thinking through everything he has said, and you can see him now really means you understand him and his message clearly now, and it took a panoramic view to get to that point.
"be a mentor" is another guide reference.
"bust a few rhythms so muthafuckas remember where the thought is. I brought all this so you can survive when law is lawless." more guide reference, and implying he should get his credit for his message. Then stating the purpose, which is that you can heed his message when what things are, is not what things should be. like, stuffs unfair or something.

The thing is all of you could be right above and below this post but songs are songs. unless you are in the writers mind when they right it or just really good at figuring out what songs mean we are all gonna interpret something different. I think it is about drugs. I mean everyone is gonna interpret something different dont get mad if you think you are right and someone else says something different I mean it is also just a song.

2d is taking painkillers and does not like it, and del the ghost is trying to say that people who do drugs or take them are not going to be happy with thier lives.
(simple ;) )

Everyone is hitting in on the spot. The guy is drugged up(and the world is passing him by), although he wishes he wasn't. He feels he has the potential to live a better life(sunshine in a bag), and he's useless but not for long means that he plans to soon act towards a better life. The rap part is mostly giving him motivation that he can do it, and explains how he can go about it, as many of the posts above use correct references. If you have these symptoms mentioned this song can really be a motivation for changing your life. Great song, and yes it is refrencing Clint Eastwood, "sunshine in a bag" (something great consealed(in eastwoods case gold in a bag))

Just focusing on the verse for now (hard enough as is) and leaving the chorus:
First off,he mentions that "time for him is nothing," which means that the messages could be all mixed up within the verses, with no apparent linear order (wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey....). In the second verse he seems to identify himself as rhythym itself, in which case the intro to the first verse makes more sense. rhythym is rhythym, regardless of time period, so how could you date or age such an abstract idea? Del also makes several comments about how he is intangible and "couldn't be there;" but at the same time, "you shouldn't be scared" because he is "in them, every sprouting tree...every cloud you see," and that the idea that rhythym is something one person has and another doesn't is completely ridiculous, as is the idea that any one person or band can create a "new" rhythym ("picture you gettin' down in a picture tube like you lit the fuse"). He goes on to point out just how much rhythyms/patterns are "the essence/ the basics" of everyday life: "when the law is lawless" and none of the old rules apply, people naturally seek order and an understandable pattern("without it you make it"). Del also mentions that rhythym was the cause of this lawlessness ("I brought all this"), especially referring to the dynastic cycle and the idea that every "golden age" is followed by unforeseen corruption (you see with your eyes, I see destruction and demise). On the other hand, those perceptive enough to recognize these patterns ("Y'all can see me now 'cause you don't see with your eyes; you perceive with your minds") will have a "clearer view" but be considered "too crazy" by the rest of the world, which generally ignores doomsayers and insists that "it's all in your head." Even so, Del/Rhythym has all the time in the world to get through to the general population, so he's "gonna stick around with Russ and be a mentor" for as long as it takes people to realize who is "really kickin' tunes."

Here's my interpretation of the chorus:
In "Romeo and Juliet," the friar uses the word happy to mean lucky or fortunate; and in "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly," Clint Eastwood's character uses "sunshine in a bag" to refer to his gold.So here's what I think the verse boils down to: I'm down on my luck, but better than I could be; I've got a bit of money saved up, and I'm glad of that. There's no jobs right now, nothing I can do; but I know if I just sit back and wait that opportunities will arise.

This song is about how 2D has to take pain killers because of his punched eyes. He is high on the pain killers.

Sunshine in a bag (DrUgZzZ) useless but not for long the futureee (Gonna take them DruGZzZz) then he takes the drugs and Del is his "Guide" while hes trippin. "remember that its all in ur head"
Idk thats wat i always thot it was... it makes sense... and i like druggzzZzz
anonymous Jul 6th, 2011 7:32am report
to each thier own, I guess, but I've never done drugs, and don't see the song as any sorta "drug trip" anthem...here's a no-drugie view of it
"I ain't happy, I'm feeling glad,
I got sunshine in a bag,
I'm useless,but non for long
my future is coming on"
Simply put, 2-D isn't happy with his current state of life, but is glad he stil holds on to hope, or his "sunshine in a bag" (Also a clever Clint Eastwood reference, not a heyyyy drugs one. lol), and while he feels hopeless in his current state, he is hopeful that the future is going to be better.
Meanwhile, the ghostly Del, raps about guiding him as a spirit, a conscious that has already delt wih his destiny.
"Time for me is nothing cause I'm counting no age, no I couldn't be there, no you shouldn't be scared", and the "intangible" part...all references to the gorillaz storyline that Del is a Ghost that communicates through "Russel, not his muscles, but the percussion he provides", and that he is guiding the newly formed Gorillaz "Mystical maybe, a spiritual hero who appears to you to clear your view when you're too crazy", as well as "Who you think is really kickin tunes", and that "lifeness to know the definition of what life is", that there's noway of knowing your future or destiny until it's over with, and since he's a ghost, he knows what his life was now.
So imo, it's about 2-D having hope for a brighter future, and the gorillaz spirit friend trying to guide him through a time where even "law is lawless", and not in any way a song about drugs or a drug trip, though it's easy to see how some people get that meaning. Didfferent storkes for differnt folks, I guess...whatever floats your boat.

Agree that sunshine in a bag probably throws back to the bag full of money as indicated by song's title of Clint Eastwood. But that doesn't have to be the exclusive meaning. Money is really just a means to an end, useless in and of itself. The main character is "Useless but not for long" just like the money he's got. Thinking about putting sunshine in a bag is like taking something that could be awesome, and storing it away where it's not really doing anything for you. Could be in the form of money, could be in the form of drugs, but what I really think is that all the different possible meanings are intending to point us back to the big underlying meaning, which is the fact that most human beings keep their potential "stored up in a bag" and never really put themselves to their highest possible use.
It gives us something to "feel glad" about. A temporary moment of hope that we have something amazing in us. But until we take that sunshine out of the bag, until we let ourselves out of the cage, we aren't really happy. I think the verses make it pretty obvious that while this song may have references to being high, it's about a lot more than that. Parts about being high leading to a spiratual awakening "Gunsmoking righteous, with one toke your psychic" Other parts about being high getting in the way of being complete "I see destruction and demise, corruption in disguise from this fucking enterprise"
But either way, there's this higher power (call it spirit guide or call it God) using your flaws, using the very thing that's getting in the way of your potential (getting high) to lead you to a place of understanding. "Bet you didn't think so I command you to" the "spiritual hero who appears in you to clear your view when you're too crazy" forcing you to see that big picture panoramic view when you need it most.
All the drum references "under the snare" and the stuff about Russ's percussion and the rhythm that's in everything... it's the underlying truth of the universe that there is something bigger and more powerful than you, calling the shots, "kicking tunes" and that rhythm will either be pounded into us like a snare drum, or we can accept it and dance to the groove of it When we allow him to make it childlike in nature.
There is clearly an other that actually lights the fuse (not us). "remember where the thought is, I brought all this" reminds us not to be so arrogant as to think we're in control. We're just the characters on someone elses TV (imagine you getting down in a picture tube.) When we "pick and choose" (try to control things outside ourselves - through money, power drugs, we lose out) Doesn't matter who we are "chicks and dudes different crews" we are not in charge. But there's no need to fear that... because the one who is in charge is good at repairs and can make it all manageable. We can see it when we decide to see with our minds.
