Here's what I've always thought: It's a sad parent, singing about their dead child. -
It sounds to me like a song addressed to a wife who has died, remembering the young son they had also lost who she has rejoined. It's about the saddest thing I've heard and I really hope Sam Beam hasn't lived it.
