Coward of the County Lyrics

Everyone considered him the coward of the county.
He never stood one single time to prove the county wrong.
His mama named him Tommy, the folks just called him yellow,
Something always told me they were reading Tommy wrong.

He was only ten years...

The world of the song is torn apart by crime.
Fathers die in prisons, mothers abandon babies, children grow up in misery, women are raped, bars are a place of fightings etc.
These crimes are very inherent for instance, Tommy is likely to fall in the same fate as hi father. He fights with the Gatlin Boys whom he shoots dead.
It's likely tha he'll be arrested and get convicted for life imprisonment without parole just like his father. Analysis is here: https://youtu.be/gD0VpDCsvok

A story's told of a boy named Tommy who was under his uncle's care, the boy's father having died in prison when the boy was 10.Before his death in prison, the father had told the boy to turn his cheek, not to turn into physical violence and that violence wasn't a true definition of a man. When Tommy grew up, he fell in love with a girl named Becky. The two got along very well until one day when Becky was physically gang assaulted by a group of Gatlin boys. This seemed to be the turn point of events as Tommy decided to go against his father's advice. He decided to catch up with the Gatlin boys and found them in an entertainment joint where he beat them up mercilessly. As he left the bar, not a Gatlin boy was standing.... He later apologized to his father for turning violent and said that the he was actually forced to do it based on the circumstances. Sometimes you gotta fight when you're a man.

This is a song about how to be a man when words must turn into action and to think for your own self what to do
