We Owned the Night Lyrics

Tell me have you ever wanted
Someone so much it hurts?
Your lips keep trying to speak
But you just can’t find the words
Well I had this dream once;
I held it in my hands

She was the purest beauty
But not the common kind
She had a way...

    "Tell me have you ever wanted someone so much it hurts? Your lips keep trying to speak, but you just can't find the words"

    I think this part means that you like someone a lot but you don't have the courage to tell them how you really feel..

    Meaning no disrespect to the others who have posted interpretations, just the opposite in fact: I think it's great, but I don't think any of them have it quite right (but then again, it could be me who's wrong). I think its more specific than young love in general, I think the girl is still alive, and I think it's more meaningful than a one night stand. This is what the song means to me.

    The artist is singing about a girl he used to love, possibly his first love, but he has not seen her in years. The song is a reminiscence back to when she was his. As the first lines tell you, he loved her so much it hurt, and he was struck dumb every time they were together. He felt like he was dreaming. He goes on to describe her as beautiful and pure, but not in a way you would expect; she's unique, and it felt like she was the only person in the world, and that they're love was the only thing.

    He then goes on to describe actual experiances they had: a glass of wine, a moonlit dance... the beginning of their last night together.

    Then he snaps back to the present and says that every time the summer comes, he thinks about her, and that as he looks at the stars, he wonders if she's looking at them too, and thinking of him like he's thinking of her. Looking up, he is reminded of waking up the morning after their first time, and he's struck by the realization that they never spoke again after that.

    He says that it was a perfect night of pure and untainted love, and he's thinking of his love, wondering where she is today.

    This song gets to me like no other. I get a little misty-eyed, and it makes me think of a girl I barely know.

    Aside from the obvious "owning the night" thing, I think he is singing about a girl he was in love with who died suddenly....
