My interpretation for this is that he is singing about a broken toaster.

"When you lose something that you can't replace"

This song was written by Chris Marin to his wife after her father died. It is very sweet and makes sense.

I read in a magazine that Chris wrote this song for Gwyneth Paltrow after her father died. She came home from the hospital covered and drenched in tears, and he started crying and asked her, "what can I do for you? tell me how I can do" and she looked up at him, and said "just hold me... cause you're the only thing that can fix me right now"

And that was that - he wrote the song the next day.

I was wandering in the end he sings "I promise you I will learn from the mistakes" anyone got a clue what that's all about?

My daughter passed away soon after this song came out and I saw it as very comforting to me. It almost felt like she was saying the words to me through Chris Martin's voice. We also played this song at her funeral.

This was the song we used for my fathers funeral and evertime I hear it now I remember him. He was an alcoholic and all of the lyrics apply to his life. It was the perfect song to describe everything that I was feeling.

I think the thing about Gwyneths father is true, but maybe the song can also just be seen in a way that says everyone needs fixing in some way, nobody's slate is ever clean. So maybe it's a song about a relationship that's struggling and how, despite how many mistakes we make in life that hurt the ones we love, the people you love fix you.

I know that was mega cheese but.....

This song is what Chris wrote about wife Gwyneth Paltrow when she lost her father.

All I know is that this was the song that played in my mind when my mom's death was near...till this day every time I hear it I break down in tears.

Crazy as I am, I believe that this song's second meaning is that sex before marriage is bad. Just read through the lyrics with that mindset and it all fits together. Really, just try it.

I know that this song is meant to be about Chris Martin's wife (Paltrow) losing her father, but for me at the moment it seems to represent what I am going through. Specifically the transition from highschool to university, feeling as if, although I have achieved everything I wanted I feel strangely empty and alone. More broadly I think this song can be interpreted as the affect, such as a death or a major lifestyle change or any kind of loss, can have on someone. As was said in another interpretation, everyone needs fixing at some point in their life when something has happened to them and set them off course... just ideas.

I think the previous interpretation was very interesting, as just started college too. especially with "when you try your best but you don't succeed and get what you want but not what you need", etc. I definitely felt the struggles with the expectations to do well. It all goes to show how this and all of their music is so universal and meaningful, whether it's school, a broken heart, bereavement, loss of virginity, or whatever! that's why they're my favorite band of all time...

I've been reading everyone's responses to the song, and it seems that it fits in a number of different aspects of life. Of course, life has many ups and downs. This song seems to be about the downs, and is quite sad, until the AMAZING guitar solo near the end of the song, which seems to say "Everything is going to be okay." It's almost reassuring. The song is melancholy, yet uplifting. I can't do it mercy with describing it... But I never realized how deep down it really hits until I heard them playing it live in concert... One word can describe: Wow.
It actually had me crying, right there in the seat.
Great band, they give us something to relate to. Because when something can sum up your feelings, it's comforting.

Hmmn, Ive read somewhere back that it was written by Chris to his wife because her father died. That might be a possible explenation for this song. But I don't think that's the only reason. I mean, they put a lot of effort in the buildup. Almost like they want to cheer them up first, and then give them an intens feeling of the pain, and build of on a way so they can let it go after. I think this song

I think that these guys of Coldplay make their songs based on what's more in life, like afterlife or paranormal. This is even told on their fansite. About X&Y: "The lyrics are about big subjects like life and death, love and loss, about being fascinated by the world around us but also about accepting that some things can never be fully understood."

Now, songstyles like new-age are not only soothing, but are also made with a healing working, because they put cosmic energy in it.
"Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you "
I believe Coldplay did the same with this song.

The line "When you love someone and it goes to waste" can pull at anyone's heartstrings.

I think this song is about Apple coming into their lives. The song has a lot of lines in it that sound similar to how new parents would feel. To me it sounds like he's singing to her and telling her that eventhough she's distressed about the baby, he'll make it better.

I love this song in every aspect every angle and every nook that it has. It doesn't matter how you interprete it, it just sounds good no matter wat, n most importantly it relates to me a lot and I believe, to many others too.

My best friend, Maskinah Abu Kasim likes this song too, very much. Thanks Mas, for being my best friend. You are the first person to introduce me to this wonder.

Remember, if you were ailed somehow, I'll be there to fix you.

I, too, beleive it was written after Gwyneth's father passed. But I found my own personal interpretation...the first time I heard this song there was a lot going on in my life.... a life-long friendship of mine was going down the drain, one of my boyfriend's best friend passed away and work was not going the way I wanted it to. But despite all the things going wrong, my boyfriend and I still had a trip planned to go to Disney World with his parents. To my surprise, when I got there he proposed to me in the top the Cinderella Castle. We took this CD with us on the trip and and the more we listened to this song, the more we knew it was going to be our "First Dance" song at our wedding. We've had people ask why we would want such a sad song played for our first dance but we don't feel that it's a sad song. We feel like it's a great representation of how we always want to be with one another - any time we " love someone but it goes to waste", "lose something you can't replace", or "try your best but you don't succeed" - we will be there to fix each other! This song is just so simple yet so powerful!
