I read in a magazine that Chris wrote this song for Gwyneth Paltrow after her father died. She came home from the hospital covered and drenched in tears, and he started crying and asked her, "what can I do for you? tell me how I can do" and she looked up at him, and said "just hold me... cause you're the only thing that can fix me right now"

And that was that - he wrote the song the next day.

I heard this song many times since it was out, and I agree it is about someone you love dying. The first time that I heard it after my father was in the hospital dying was the first time that I understood it and felt that he was speaking to me. I'm sure the song has many meanings to many people but once you are in the situation where someone so important to you is dying or has died, I think you'll see that the other interpretations are no where even close. It fits in with a parent dying.

"try your best but you don't succeed" - possibly the doctors tried to save him
"Get what you want, but not what you need" - anything can be bought with money but a life lost is gone forever
"Feel so tired that you can't sleep" - the trauma of the experience makes it impossible
"Stuck in reverse" - Maybe that life feels like it's unwinding, or you think about the past a lot
"lose something you can't replace" - I used to think about broken friendships or sentimental items but this is about a lost life because lives can never be replaced
"love someone but it goes to waste" - death feels meaningless, all the time and love you give to someone feels wasted when their life is taken from you
"lights will guide you home" - everyone should know what this means
"ignite your bones" - I doubt this refers to cremation - probably just means the traumatic feeling you have when a loved one dies
"high up above or down below" - could be heaven or hell, not sure. This whole paragraph is very hard to figure out. Just What Your Worth must be a quote he heard from somewhere, I believe its in real quotes in the lyrics. That means it is just that - a quote of spoken words, so without knowing the context it would be hard. It may be that he is trying to cheer her up and tell her that she is still important, that she needs to move on with her life and let him go.

That just best describes the life I am having...

who will fix me up?

My father passed away over a year ago and I still listen to this song and my eyes well up.

Lights will guide you home
and ignite your bones
and I will try to fix you

my interpretation to this is, when you die your soul is guided by the light into heaven, and as if your bones were lit into stars since your body doesn't matter anymore. It also has dual meaning for me since my father wanted to be cremated.
He was also a very depressed person, so of course I thought about the fix you part as well.

No one can replace a loved one.

He may have wrote the song to his wife but I think that possibly deep down it asking what is missing in all of our lives and what must we do to feel complete. No matter what we do and who we have in our lives, and no matter how much money or what accomplishments we make, there will always be a void. This is because we were made to worship God(Worship=Sacrifice=Love) and commune with God. But sin causes us to be separated from God. Jesus died for our sins and once we accept that we are able to commune with God and worship him. Fulfilling our purpose and making us fill whole or fixed.

When you're completely broken and lost and alone and you hear Chris Martin's voice saying "I will try to fix you" how can I even describe the feeling. It also works the other way, my sister is suicidal and in all my desperation "I will try to fix you"

It's about the movie Predator.

I have a 2 1/2 year old son who was recently diagnosed with autism. Although I had my suspicions for some time, when I heard the actual diagnosis, well needless to say, I went through a variety of emotions: sadness, fear, resent, and especially anger.

I sometimes felt I had no one to turn to, while I was pushing others away. And I was especially struggling with the idea of turning my back on God.

Until one day I was driving home from work thinking about my son with tears rolling down my face, and Fix You came on the radio. Coldplay is one of my favourite bands, but I never really paid much attention to their lyrics. I'm quite sure the song is about something or someone else, but it's funny how the appropriate song comes on the radio when you are feeling down.

Listening to that song at that moment, I felt it was God Himself telling me he would fix me, so I could in turn fix my son. I believe God and I made peace with each other at that moment. But hey....that's my story!!

I beleive this song is about when your're car gets towed, the engine has died, you can't get the engine to work, etc. I'm serious!

When you try your best but you dont's succeed
(You can't get your car fixed)
When you get what you want, but not what you need
(Wife brings you a glass of water but you want the car fixed)
When you feel so tired, but you can't sleep
(You may never drive in your '67 Mustang again)
Stuck in reverse
(Like a car)

And the tears come streaming down your face
(Sad about Mustang)
When you lose something you can't replace
('67 Mustang is hard to replace)
When you love someone but it goes to waste
(Loving the car)
Could it be worse?
(It could but you love the car)

Lights will guide you home,
(As in head lights)
And ignite your bones,
(To ignite the engine)
And I will try to fix you,
(Owner tries to fix car but he is not a mechanic)

High up above or down below
(Possibly the cost of fixing the car is "high up above" or the price of fixing it is "down below")
When you're too in love to let it go
(You're in love with the car)
But if you never try you'll never know
(If you don't try to fix it then you'll never know if you can)
Just what you're worth
(Just what the car is worth)

Lights will guide you home
(As in head lights)
And ignite your bones
(To ignite the engine)
And I will try to fix you
(Owner tries to fix car but he is not a mechanic)

Tears stream down your face
(Owner crying about car)
When you lose something you cannot replace
(Hard to replace '67 Mustang)
Tears stream down on your face
(Owner crying about car)
And I
(A vow to fix the car)

Tears stream down your face
(Owner crying about car)
I promise you I will learn from my mistakes
Learn to not kill the engine so much!)
Tears stream down on your face
(Owner crying about car)
And I
(A vow to fix the car)

Lights will guide you home
(As in head lights)
And ignite your bones
(To ignite the engine)
And I will try to fix you
(Owner tries to fix car but he is not a mechanic)

Lights will guide you home
(As in head lights)
And ignite your bones
(To ignite the engine)
And I will try to fix you
(Owner tries to fix car but he is not a mechanic)

I personally find that Coldplay's lyrics are all beautiful and they have a really special quality in the fact that people can relate to them and they can help people through hard times. I think this song can mean something different to each individual.

For me I find this song comforting as someone close to me was diagnosed with alzheimers. The line "tears stream down your face when you lose something you cannot replace" is how I feel about someone I love falling apart.

I'm a schizophrenic and I think this song is about schizophrenia because I listen to it over and over again. I never really listened to the words from the time I was becoming mentally ill. Then I realized that when I wasn't very good at life, I wondered why I listened to this song so many times. I took time to listen to every word and it matched my life completely. WILD!
