He finally understands what has gone wrong. He has deeply examined what the relationship and the girl meen to him. He was running in circles about what he thought was important but was wrong. In the end what is really important is pure honesty. Its sounds chessy, but if you listen close to the song, its full of hurt and he clues into to two simple facts: Love is worth any sacrifice and real love is a puzzle no one can solve completly. He feels like a sicentist trying to figure and sort things out one block at a time.....but no one can take it apart because it just dosent work that way......."Take me back to the start" Why? because Love is not something you can totally understand......

I think the song does not pointing specifically to just one relationship. It fits all, from your dead mother to your ended affair. It all deals with loss: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. denying to accept the truth that you have lost something or someone a part of you. Anger, blaming somebody even to yourself cause you don't have the guts/power/control over the thing or someone that it is slipping out of you. bargaining, your trying to rationalize to turn back the time to settle the dispute, event or your deeds which is impossible. depression, the loneliness and anxiety for you know you can't do anything. finally the acceptance of the reality that you loss it, but you hardly want it back.

I really think this song is about how confusing and daunting love and relationships can be. This guy just ended a relationship and he is trying to figure out what the heck went wrong. Like a scientist, he mathematically tries to go about in a logical fashion determining where things went wrong. He just wants to go back to the start of the relationships where everything was right and good.

He doesn't want to break up with his girlfriend, despite loving her more than anything, but he has to because she is his mistress; nobody said it was easy. He's having an affair. Or alternatively one has to assume that each and every one of us can apply it to our own lives, as with any song. Except 'Tubthumping' by 'Chumbawamba'.

He is the scientist trying to figure out what went wrong... probably with a relationship.

He's trying to figure out what went wrong as a scientist... with numbers and figures and analysing things or whatever scientists do lol,
"I was just guessing at numbers and figures, pulling the puzzles apart."

I think he says,
"Comin up tails, Heads on the science apart"?
Maybe that has something to do with a coin... probability, statistics... Something scientific lol... maybe that symbolises confusement... Maybe tails is his heart... but then the "heads" also comes up. "Heads" being the scientist part of him.

He realises that the heart is more important than logic.
"Questions of science, Science and progress, Do not speak as loud as my heart."
Then he says
"I'm going back to the start"
Ahooooooooo :D

That makes sense to me... It probably won't to you haha.
Yeah :D

When I hear this song, I think of Dr. Frankenstein. He's a scientist, he reanimated his wife. He can go back to the start.

Well its like all well written songs, they seem resonate well with most situations.

For me personally I think it's about losing a loved one and reasoning it out with science and coming to no clear conclusion. He also wishes he could have this person back and tell them how they mean to him.

Apparently its actually inspired by a book chris read but as I said earlier all good songs can be interpreted to fit most common situations, so it strikes a chord with everyone.

K I have a question

Did anybody say that it was going to be easy????
and Did anybody say it was gonna be that hard???

That's been confusing me lately.

This song is not about anything all of you have spoken about.
The first verse is him saying to himself I can open up and sing about my life and experiences and just have to get used to the fame. The lines, Questions of science, science and progress Don't speak as loud as my heart. Is him (Chris) saying hey maybe I don't want to sing about real things that happen to me and keep myself private I will just sing about art, politics, science etc... would not speak as loud as his heart (see the first verse). That is my 2 cents.

I personally think that this song is about two people who were in a long relationship, but towards the end it became an on again, off again thing ("come back to haunt me, tell me you love me, and I go back to the start"). And that every time they get back together and "run in circles" they are taken back to the start of their relationship, but then it is always is hard again and they break up again. I think the song is for after one of them (probably her) decided they did not want that for their life and now he is trying to figure out why she does not want to try anymore, he cannot figure it out on his own, so he is trying to logically think about it like it is a puzzle. He is deeply hurt, but ("i'm going back to the start") wishes to live in the beginning when things were good. My personal interpretation. I like this song a lot because it relates to my situation.

This song (to me at least) is about a man who always looked at everything in his life from a scientific point of view. But when he lost someone he love (no necessarily through death) he realized that science cannot answer every question and solve every problem. Love is one of the things that science can't always explain. Nobody said it was easy. Thats the point of the song.

I think this song is about unexpressed love, and a relationship that goes round in circles without getting anywhere as a result of his actions (running in circles), i.e (come up to meet you, tell you I'm sorry). And suggesting it is he who has made the mistakes, (I had to find you, tell you I need you, tell you I set you apart. Tell me your secrets, ask me your questions, lets go back to the start). It's about a relationship which is struggling to work between two people who love each other, who are trying desperately to work out why (I was just guessing at numbers and figures). Ultimately, I feel as if it's expressing the fact that love alone is not enough to base a relationship on, and that sometimes things don't work, even if you love the other person deeply (tell me you love me, come back and haunt me)

I think that this song is about one of the heaviest times in the life of a person who is analytical but also very emotional. These kinds of people are scientists and musicians, mathematicians and artists, and so on. When they realize that viewing the world in a way that is all numbers and symbols, it hits them that life is all in essence, and that you cannot translate ALL of its wonders into data if you still have a soul.

It's like trying to create a time machine,
or mind reading,
or reading the future--
all things that are impossible.

In the end, he says that you should just let things be:
if they happen, they happen;
if they happened, they happened;
if she doesn't, then she doesn't;
if you FEEL, then you feel. Period.

This song is about a couple getting into a car accident and the girl the guy is in love with dies. Now he's stuck thinking about what could have been and all his regrets and he wishes he could go back to the beginning!!

This is about science.

My theory is that this man had a beautiful yet very insecure woman and more than likely he never gave her the attention and love that she so needed.(he set her apart) Then something happens, death or the sort (tell me you love me, come back and haunt me)and suddenly he realizes how much he loved her and wants a second chance....let's go back to the start. He knew relationships weren't easy but never knew how hard. And now he really sees how hard it is cause something so drastic happened to her and he'll never have her back even though he never knew he would lose her this way. And it's such a shame for us to part because all along something so simple as maybe just showing her how much he loved her could have prevented the inevitable.

Man and woman in a relationship. Man is a scientist, who gets lost in his profession and grows to love his work more than his spouse. Then there is a tragic accident. It could have possibly been cause by the man on accident or not, that can go either way. Now with his spouse being dead, he finally realizes what he has done wrong and just wants to throw away his profession as a scientist and go back to the start. However, the sad part is that he can only wish, because whats done is done.

I agree with one of meaning that this is about a scientist who has realised that he was so much engaged into the science and its progress that he almost forgot God and his relationship.And he feels this when his girlfriend died, a area which is governed by god and not by science. I don't know why most of the people link it with some girlfriend breakups,

For me its bout losing someone close to you. I lost my mum wen I was 12 and this song reminds me of her and helps me through. In the clip too, you see his partner dies in a car crash (a shame for us to part,no body said it was easy, take me back to the start)
anonymous 2008-04-26 08:07:46
I think that it's about someone singing about someone who has died and dealing with the death wanting to "go back to the start" missing them so badly "come back and haunt me" that you start to analyze death and love - What is it? Why? "questions of science, science and figures, do not speak as loud as my heart". and finally something that everyone who has lost a loved one would understand "no body said it was easy, no one ever said it would be so hard"
anonymous 2008-06-05 19:47:14
After hearing this song countless times (It steals a tear from me every time though), I think that it's about death. Love AND death. "It's such a shame that we have to part" means that they loved each other, but one of them died.
