It seems as though the main character in this song is maybe engaged?

But he cheated and he feels like he can't tell his fiance because the "Truth is worse than anything I could bring myself to do to you."

He's ashamed and worried that she won't have him after he's done this to her, so he leaves.

I think he did something wrong and can't bring himself to tell his wife/fiance/girlfriend/you name it about it.

This song sounds like it should be on broadway, don't you think?

He did something wrong that he feels like will make his fiance mad, and he doesn't think that he can face her, so he leaves.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't have anything to do with cheating, I think he has a wife/girlfriend/fiance (but probably just girlfriend) and the entire song is just him realizing that he doesn't love her like he thought he did and has no way of telling her.
In the lyrics
You’re a canary, I’m a coal mine
Cause sorrow is just all the rage
He's sayin she tells it how it is and he doesn't ever let anything out.
Take one for the team
You all know what I mean. I think the meaning of this is that he's going to probably stay with her because he can't let her down. When he says I'm so sorry but not really, he's saying that he's sorry for not loving her but there's nothing he can do cause that's how he feels about it.
In the corus he keeps saying The truth hurts worse than anything I can bring myself to do to you, because he can't tell her he doesn't love her, if it was that he was cheating it wouldn't make sense for him to say it because the truth is worse than what it is, if it was cheating then the act would be worse than the truth.
