Lyrics: How cruel is the golden rule?
When the lives we lived are only golden-plated
And I knew that the lights of the city were too heavy for me

When the lives we lived are only golden-plated
-i believe this means that the golden rule is wrong because
everyone has moments in there like that aren't right or where they're not treated fairly
And I knew that the lights of the city were too heavy for me
Though I carried karats for everyone to see
- this means that he knew he wouldn't be able to withstand all the fame and fortune, yet he still acts like its not getting to him.
And I saw God cry in the reflection of my enemies
And all the lovers with no time for me
And all of the mothers raise their babies
To stay away from me
- I think this means that he believes god is ashamed of him and his hectic life style as a performer, that now everyone he once knew has found love and no longer want to be with him or around him, also I think this means that he has become some kind of bad influence on children becausee of his lifestyle.
Tongues on the sockets of electric dreams
Where the sewage of youth drowned the spark of my teens
-im not clearly sure what this part means but I beleive it means that now he is doing everything he wanted to do as a teen but never could because of what he was trying to accomplish.(getting famous)
And I knew that the lights of the city were too heavy for me (too heavy for me)
Though I carried karats for everyone to see (everyone to see)
-(same as above)
And I saw God cry in the reflection of my enemies
And all the lovers with no time for me
And all of the mothers raise their babies
To stay away from me
-(also same as above)
And pray they don't grow up to be...
ah the clincher lol I believe it is meant to be followed by me but was takin out for a more mysterious purpose.

The golden plate represents there golden record, heavy lights repesents the spotlight, and karats repesents there riches. The first verse is about what people would become once they have a gold record. The chorus shows that how "the band" took over a lot of the artists fame, no real love for the band, and what parents do to not make there children be like them. seceond verse is about how teens would cheer for "the band" even though they are miserable inside.

Pete has said he's been depressed his entire life even when he was a teenager.
His parents separated on his 8th birthday and later got back together. It affected him a lot, he never really enjoyed his birthdays after that.
His teen years he spent vandalizing suburban Wilmette. He also was in a whole bunch of bands, so it's open for interpretation, but consider that while interpreting.

Life in the spotlight is just an act and a bunch of fake smile and false truths. The karats are only for show. Like some stars rent the accessories they wear for an event then return it.
"And I saw God cry in the reflection of my enemies
And all the lovers with no time for me
And all of the mothers raised their babies
To stay away from me"
Loneliness in relationships and there is only one thought on the other persons mind. This next part I relate a lot. Me for example, I have a son and I'm 18, I can't hold relationships with some men because of that reason. It is also hard for me to have a decent relationship because their Mothers don't want me around.
"Tongues on the sockets of electric dreams
Where the sewage of youth drown the spark of my tears
And I knew that the lights of the city were too heavy for me (too heavy for me)
And though I carry karats for everyone to see (everyone to see)"
I think this is about the fear of not becoming successful. But also being scared of rejection, doubt full of thoughts that you can't handle the fame and pressure of being like others want you.
"And I saw God cry in the reflection of my enemies
And all the lovers with no time for me
And all of the mothers raised their babies
To stay away from me
And pray they don't grow up to be me"
This is also another part of my life. God feels sad because of the enemies that I hold. The mothers selling the judgments and lies of me being a whore and all that- all not true. I scare them because I have a child and Im 18 and Im not married. They don't want their babies to end up like me.
This is how I take the song. It fits in all the cracks in my life. Many may disagree but whatever.
