Super long, sorry don’t read it if you want something short…this song is pretty self explanatory anyways. :)

This is a story about a guy who has a girl friend but he likes her more than a friend, so that’s why he calls her “beauty queen” at the beginning. The trouble she had with herself was that she had a boyfriend (thus the line “she always belonged to someone else”) that always hurt her, whether physically, emotionally, verbally, or by cheating with someone, whatever the reason, he always would hurt her. So this guy friend of hers would always be there for her when her boyfriend would hurt her. (thus the line, “he was always there to help her”)

When it says “I drove for miles and miles and wound up at your door”, it’s saying that he would do anything for her, drive a million miles if he has to because he cares for her so much. That’s why he says “I don't mind spending everyday Out on your corner in the pouring rain”. When it says, “Look for the girl with the broken smile” it means that she is sad and hurt by her boyfriend so all she wants at that point is to feel loved, and she will be loved by him. (thus the line “And she will be loved She will be loved”)

When the song says “Tap on my window knock on my door I want to make you feel beautiful” it’s the guy telling her she can go to him whenever because he wants to make her feel beautiful and loved because he loves her. When it says “I know I tend to get so insecure It doesn't matter anymore” It means that he is insecure around her because he loves her so much but he knows that she doesn’t see him in the same way so he feels vulnerable around her but it doesn’t matter how he feels because he will always be there to help her.

I’m not really sure what he means when he says “It's not always rainbows and butterflies
It's compromise that moves us along” but I think it may mean that he knows he can’t be with her (that’s why he says its not always rainbows and butterflies because those are symbols of happiness/good things) so he will compromise his happiness to help her with her relationship problems because that’s what gets her through her pain

When he says “My heart is full and my door's always open
you can come anytime you want”, he is telling that to her because his heart is always full of love for her and she can come to him whenever she wants because he will always be there for her.

When he says “I know where you hide Alone in your car” I think he is referring to that after her boyfriend hurts her she goes to her car and sits there alone crying. And when it says “ Know all of the things that make you who you are” he knows her perfectly and he knows that when she tells her boyfriend that it’s over between them because he keeps hurting her, it’s really not true because she will keep going back to him like she always does. (thus the line “ I know that goodbye means nothing at all”) And after she goes back to her boyfriend he will hurt her once again and then she will go back crying to her guy friend. (thus the line “Comes back and begs me to catch her every time she falls”)

That’s what I think this song is about and I can really relate since I am the “beauty queen” to my best guy friend who likes me but I don’t feel the same way because I am still in love with my on again/off again boyfriend who constantly hurts me emotionally and I am always crying back to my guy friend and he is always there for me even when I say I will never get back with my ex but he knows that it’s a lie because I ALWAYS DO.

Wow, I lived this song. I had an abusive husband and it robbed me of my worth, dignity, and spirit. I also had a much younger male friend, an old soul wise beyond his years. He was the only one I could confide in about my situation. He did all the things in this song--picked me up when I fell, made me feel beautiful on my worst day. He was always there for me. He saw the things that make me what I am and embraced them. And the part about hiding in my car--I would leave and just drive around to get away from my husband's tirades. The broken smile? I had lost the ability to be able to really smile from the heart, and that's what it means to me. He gave that back to me. He confessed he loved me and said he thought he could be the person I deserved to have. My heart belongs to him now. The rainbows and butterflies? No, it's true, for all that we share it still can't always be like that. We've gone through times in our lives when we weren't together, but our hearts always find their way back to each other. That's why goodbye means nothimg at all.

The girl is caught up in the whole abusive relationship cycle and he (her friend) knows that she can't help choosing bad guys but he'll love her forever even though they'll never really be together.

Wow I was way off I thought it was about a girl being abused "broken smile" someone help ????????

I used to think this song was about a girl who never belonged anywhere because she was different and that someone was saying that someday she would belong somewhere. Yeah. My ears weren't all that good back then...and I didn't hear this song too often. But just recently I listened to the whole thing and now it's my favorite song. It's so sad, though: I think it's about this guy who likes this girl, but his love in unrequited. Still, he's a great friend to her. It sorta relates to that new movie Enchanted, the one about the princess accidentally falling into New York. Well, she catches the eye of that lawyer dude, but she's already engaged to the Prince Edward guy. And yet the lawyer dude is still a friend to her. Haven't seen the movie...but from what I've heard, it kinda sounds like that.

Music video scared me...a lot.

I relate this song (which is my absolute FAVORITE!!) to a stupid story I once wrote. The song relates to a guy who's in love with a girl at his school, who's made fun of because she doesn't like rap music or anything else the popular kids like. She doesn't have a boyfriend, but is busy dealing with something else (it's her job to help some fairy tale characters through the story of Into The Woods...I told you it was kinda stupid). Anyway, he keeps his feelings to himself for a while, but finally tells her how he feels at the end, after he and some others travel with the girl to help her with her job. And he's always there during the middle of the story. I just thought this song would be perfect for it (even thought it's pretty lame, I know).

As a physically disabled woman, I would like to commend 'anonymous' who submitted his interpretation of She Will Be Loved. I applaud the depth and sincerity of this person's response. We the physically disabled deserve a voice in this superfical industry, and it pains me to see that so many of you did not pick up on the obvious imagery in this beautiful song. I have lived with my disability for 5 years. My boyfriend was drinking and driving on the way to my prom, and I was paralyzed. My best male friend has always been there to help me when I fall out of my wheel-chair. But he wanted something more that I couldn't give. This song makes me cry, but it helps me with the pain that I can no longer feel in my legs.

It's about this girl that he'd do anything for no matter who she was with. He'd always be there for her no matter what and he wanted to be with her but...she was never available. He wants to tell her sooo bad how he feels. I mean, they hang out and have a good time, but he wants more than that...only he's afraid to say so. I love this song. It's kinda like...no matter if she has someone or not...whether he was the last man on earth and she didn't wanna go that route with him, she will always be loved by him. She will always have a place in his heart.

I second the prostitute theory.
Ive only listened to it a few times, but that's the impression I got.

The whole thing about 18 and a beauty queen, kinda like barely legal and using her beauty as a prostitute.
ANd of course belonging to every guy, and in the music vid it seems she almost is a prostitute at a hotel, with a pimp and everything.
And of course he says the whole, tap on my window, knock on my door, similar to a prostitute soliciting customers.
And perhaps most convincing of all, the whole thing about standing on HER CORNER in the pouring rain.

Obviously he is in love with a prostitute, and wants her to love him back, but in the end it is hopeless, all he will ever be to her is a customer.

It seems obvious that this song is about a relationship with both the mother and her daughter. I believe most of the lyrics are directed to the daughter, that he doesn't mind being there for her or making her beautiful. Whether he likes older women or not, I think the mother could represent any woman as long as it's not the daughter. The daughter is NOT a prostitute as many people are saying--but, just has a hard time settling her feelings since she's only 18.

The daughter also KNOWS about the affair between Adam and her mother. At the end, the video shows us enough flashbacks to fill in the holes. When Adam went to comfort the girl's mother, and eventually make out with her, the daughter came in just in time. Also, when the mother storms off, Adam intimately comforts her -- the daughter also witnesses this. What does this mean? This means the daughter has known about them before and probably doesn't want to break up just yet. She wants to look beautiful, or look loved, so she uses Adam. While no one else knows about the affair between her mother and Adam, everyone would still think the daughter is loved or whatsoever.

So, Adam is fine with being there for the daughter and making her look loved but his heart truly belongs to the mother. That's why when she found them out at the end of the video, he didn't seem to really care. He knows she will be loved and she's got the rest of her life to prove that.

I think this song is about a girl who is sort of like Cherry from The Outsiders- pretty, popular, but also very sensitive and rather insecure.

She goes through lots of relationships with popular jock asshole type people, but they always hurt her(hence, 'she always belonged to someone else'). That's where her best guy friend comes in...

He's in love with her. She comes to him, kind of on the rebound, after each relationship.

Well... That's about all I can write for now, it's late, but you know what I mean.

A pretty girl who been abused and there in love but she owned not by partners more like bosses and parents etc. She doesn't have much confidence and he loves her and wants to look after her but part of her is scare of being hurt again so she pushes him away "try so hard to say goodbye" not always "rainbows and butterflies" cause she's haunted by the past relationships and he doesn't mind look after her and she needs him but he gets scared of losing her.

He knows her and needs her. Every time she riminded she runs to him and he makes her feel great again.

There are two interpretations, one about his girlfriend Jane and the other about god.

Everyone seems to know the one about Jane so I will tell you the one about god.
the girl had problems but looked like she had a perfect life, god was there for her but "she always belonged to someone else" but god is always there for her even in the pouring rain (aka problems). It also explains how god will always love anyone and and except anyone

If you didn't see this interpretation the first time give the song another listen!

I thought it was about a guy who falls for a girl who also dates the wrong sort of guys that don't love her but she stays with them because they give her what she needs ie money, and when things get bad for her she runs to the other guy who saves her and makes her feel loved and beautiful but then she goes back to the other guy so he wants to save her from these relationships but she won't leave so he's with other girls but when she's in trouble he leaves that girl and runs to her rescue.

About two months ago, I was rereading the interpretations I had submitted for this song, and I came across one submitted by "anonymous". I read what she had to say about this song and I instantly realized the bone-head mistake that I had made in my own interpretations, which completely ignored the abusive boyfriend, and it made me think. This song, I have failed to see for about half a year now, is clearly about a boy who's in love with his best friend, but she doesn't like him that way and she has an abusive boyfriend.

I know that this website is here for song interpretation only, and I also know that some people will think I'm a dork, and others won't want my sympathy, but I don't care. I just wish to apologize if I hurt anyone out there who read my interpretations (especially the one with a random comment about the music video...). I feel awful about not seeing the real meaning of this song sooner, and I deeply regret submitting my previous interpretations, which failed to address the abusive boyfriend. And if anyone stays mad at me, I seriously don't blame you. I understand if you hate me, but I just want to let you know that I really am sorry for my mistake.

I Think this song is about a guy who loves a prostitute, before you all go bashing it hear me out.

"I've had you so many times but some how I want more"

I think its self explanatory, he's had sex with her like he is one of her regulars but he wants her to love him

"Tap on my window knock on my door I wanna make you feel beautiful"

He wants to meet up with her again and treat her better than the guys she is usually with

"I don't mind spending everyday out on your corner in the pouring rain look for the girl with the broken smile ask her if she wants to stay a while"

He goes to her hang out spot to see her and treat her right

I could go on but I gave you the major points for it, this is simply my interpretation agree or not I stand firm in it.

It is about adam levine dating a woman and suddenly falls in love with another woman.they have one night and he can't stop thinking about it.he goes back the woman and is caught by his girlfriend.the song title means the woman is suicidal and he comforted her.
anonymous 2008-05-06 20:57:22
This song is about a friend of his who has always been really insecure with herself and tries to get attention from other guys by throwing herself around. He's the only person who really cares about her but she doesn't feel the same and only comes back to him as a rebound guy. What I got from the video is that he eventually moves on with another girl and she becomes jealous and angry.
anonymous 2008-05-10 17:39:39
The song meaning has a better interpretation through the video.

The video shows the mother of his girlfriend not getting attention from her husband. The mother then begins to flirt with other men which provokes the husband to get into an argument and beat her.

The main character (Adam) feels sorry and goes to comfort her, but they share a kiss and the next few scenes show Adam constantly watching for her and thinking about her.

At the end, the mother shows the same feelings for Adam, but she knows he is taken.

She becomes furious and storms off in front of him and his girlfriend, but he chases after her and shares a passionate moment while the girlfriend sees in blind sight.

The ironic ending is shown when *she will be loved* the mother finally finds love, but he breaks his girlfriend's heart in order to do it.

My fiance and I fell in love to this song and we were going to use it for our wedding song this summer...now after reading all your interpretations I am starting to think it's a bad idea. I guess it can mean what you want it to mean...or what it means to you.
