Long ago
Just like the hearse you die to get in again
We are so far from you

'Things are better if I stay' could suggest that he felt so bad about her death that he wanted to join her, ie kill himself, but then he decides not to, realises that he can still survive and says 'things are better if I stay'.'Can you hear me/ Are you near me?'reflects him still believeing that she is nearby and some vain hope that she can in fact hear him, and will respond. His plea 'Can we pretend to leave and then we'll meet again...' appears to him him assuring her that although he won't be joining her just now, he'll be with her again someday. In this way, he is able to put himself at peace.

Other points:
'When every star fall brought you to tears again' is a reflection on the pain she went through while alive, and probably expresses regret that he was not there for her more
'We are the very hurt you've sold'could be something to do with manipulation
There are several stages of grief: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance. His harsh comments towards her ('Every heart you break' 'ther very hurt you sold')reflect the anger stage. Typically, this is comprised of 'how dare they leave me', so he could be masking bitterness at this. Bargaining is not a huge theme, but 'can we pretend' reflects this to a small extent. I think depression's an obvios one (=P). Therefore, we could say that it is a song about grief. And it does appear to me that he eventually accepts her death.

I think the video reflects this. Her rising again to dance is his inability to accept that she is dead, but when she falls back in the coffin, he is at peace with her death and has grown to accept it. At the end, the placing of her in the hearse puts an end to it. Mind you, I think this is irrelevant to the song itself as I read somewhere that Gerard did not really want to have her dance, just thought it was an interesting side-point.

So, in the end it is irrelevant whether it's about his grandma or some secret girlfriend or whatever. It's a song about loss, and surviving that loss.

(Btw, when I say 'he' I don't mean Gerard necessarily, I mean the man in the song, just before we all gather to bite my head off =P Although this could be the story of him trying to get over his grandma)

Well, I reckon it's about his girlfriend, because his grandmother didn't commit suicide, and, like said before, "Burning on just like the match you strike
To incinerate the lives of everyone you know" isn't really something to sing to your beloved grandmother, who taught you everything. So the next person that says it's about his grandmother, answer this question "why would they sing about his grandmother with lyrics suggesting that he hates her" I mean, come on people! use your logic!

This song was written about the death of Elena, Gerard and Mikeys grandmother. She was called Helena as she grew up and that is where the name of this song came from. She was very close to Gerard and you hear the emotion as he sings.

Umm.. from what I have seen and read I can only conlude that it was in fact about the grandmother. Why would they use her to cover up a suicidal ex?

Ok so the song is about two deaths but the main one is Mikey and Gerard's grandmother passing away. Her name was Elena not helena and since her death Gerard has been suicide because of it. There have been saying though that Elena had mental illnesses and pushed Mikey and Gerard away from her along with the rest of her family. She was a main influence on there music though. She gave Gerard his first car that appeared on the "I'm Not Okay" music video, the white van. There are probably more complex meanings to this song but this is the main one.

Do you guys think Gerard would have a suicide pact? come on, he may be a bit morbid in his lyrics but I really don't believe he would try to kill himself. and to all who argue the whole it's a song for their grandmother issue, you don't know. you are not Gerard or Mikey so how can you deny that? and it could also be about the girlfriend. like I said before, you don't know because you are not them. and I do believe that my chemical romance wants you to interpret their song in a way that relates to you. This song could be about someone in your life. did you ever think of that? seriously, interpret the lyrics as what relates to you. and to whoever said emos suck, fuck you. you have no right to say anything sucks, and you definitely have no right disrespecting my chemical romance like that. let's see you make two albums and be famous world wide. come on, let's see it. :)

Really no one knows because he is the one how wrote the song its his song so really we can guess all we won't about it and fight and argue about it but no one really knows for sure.
