First off, obviously, The End is part of Dead! That's why when you play one right after the other, there is NO space between the songs whatsoever. (In fact if one of them comes on, I have to turn the shuffle off just so I can hear the songs connect.)
Two, I think you guys all have a good point. I however also thought of possibly another scenario. Maybe...maybe, this dead person committed suicide. Thus the IF you get to heavens. and the did you get what you deserves. Then when Gerard sings "if life ain't just a joke, then why are we laughing?" It's like the suicider thought life was a joke, and didn't need it anymore.

I think this song is about the patient dying but it could also mean Gerard's drug and alcohol addiction is finally dead.

This song is the 2nd of the 13(possibly 14 if you want to count Blood) of the death of The Patient. In this song he finds out he is going to die in less than 2 weeks. When he finds out he is going to be dying things start running through his head. He hears people talking to him.. Telling him that "no one ever had much nice to say. I don't think they ever liked you anyways" When he heard this, he got urges to just go ahead and kill them all. "Wouldn't it be grand to take a pistol by the hand.. and wouldn't it be great if we were dead!"

the end is "the patient's" last moments alive while "Dead! is the patient dieing( hence the beeping at the beginning of the song) the speaker is the band leader informing the patient that he is dead

The narrator is a friend of the patient, he's telling him he has cancer, he tells him that nobody liked you anyway and he's kinda jealous because he's depressed and wants 2 die and doesn't understand why we're here and just doesn't care anymore because his friend is dying 2.

I agree w/ anonymous above me, but I think it's the girlfriend/wife that is brought up later that is talking.

Akk! you peeps don't get it do you? The song doesn't go " DEAD.. Have you heard the news that your dead?" it's 'HAVE' in stead of DEAD. I'm sorry iv had a rough day.

Its someone in the third person making fun of him because he's dead. and Gerard ways dad is not even dead. at least I don't think

This could be the moment that the patient dies. or some might agree that it is a dream that he's having where he truly believes he is dead. and he's getting this feeling like "is it really worth it?"

Uhhh... I don't know how to submit a correction to the lyrics, but maybe one of you do...
this part---

So tired and oh so squeamish
You never fell in love
Did you get what you deserve?
The ending of your life

--- should start out tongue-tied and oh so squeamish, not so tired and oh so squeamish... If you don't believe this, go buy the album and look at the lyrics in writing...

This song (in my opinion) is looking at death like a game! like blood, bloods a little different but its to show people that death could somehow be a game

Honestly, I don't think the song has to do with anyone literally dying. I believe it has to do with him telling someone who hurt him real bad, that they're dead to them---"have you heard the news that you're dead"
and when that person actually does die, he'll be wondering if they got what they deserve "and when you're heart stops beating I'll be wondering did you get what you deserve"

So yeah, just look past the lyrics.

Since this whole album is about the patient I think it is someone(dont know who)telling him right of the bat "your dead" and joking like saying "If life ain't just a joke
Then why are we laughing?".

Thats just what I think
