I find it interesting that the cover of the Abbey Road album begins the section on the Beatles. I recall that there were rumors of Pauls death beginning about 1966. This cover is said to be 'PROOF!,' a 'clue,' or whatever...
Now this was 40 years ago, so I don't remember it all, but the interpretation I remember is that the four of them, from right to left, represent as follows:
John is either god or a doctor, dressed in white;
Ringo is the undertaker or a preacher;
Paul is the deceased, thus no shoes;
George is the guy who buries the coffin...
Also, I believe that the license plate on the VW reads:
27 IF. Meaning IF he survived the wreck of the motorcar described in 'A Day in the Life.'
There might be other stuff on the cover that I don't remember or know about.
The rumor took off shortly after the release of Sgt. Peppers, the album that tune was on. The Beatles were aware of the rumor, since Abbey Road came out in '68, so they might have just been yanking peoples chains...
They certainly weren't above it... Especially John...
The 'Paul is Dead' rumor was a big deal some places, and began in Detroit. For more info on that, see my entry about the song 'A Day in the Life.'

Paul is smoking a cigarette with his right hand when he is in fact left handed which further supported the theory that it was not Paul but an imitation.

It was said at that time that there was a Paul look alike contest and the winner had to take Paul's place...of course all of it was bs!

I'm right handed person, I smoke with my left hand sometimes, it doesn't mean a thing. I sometimes walk without shoes or anything, it doesn't mean a thing too, I just wanted to do things I wanna do, anyways I live in a free world. well? what bout you?

What I mean to say is... man!! there's no meaning whatsoever they did in those days!! leave it alone... Enjoy the music while you still can... when you're dead, you won't hear it no more!!

Obviously if something serious happened to Paul they wouldn't have hid it.
I mean take John for instance:
When he got shot by Mark Chapman it was HUGE!
Mark is still in jail to this day and the world was never the same after that.
Then there was George, dying from lung cancer, it didn't appear as big of a deal, but they still let everyone know and it was important.
People love Paul; they would've wanted to know that he died.

Also, if he died, sure there could've been a look-a-like, but a sound-exactly-alike too? Not possible. Paul is a unique artist and would never have been able to be completely duplicated or copied at all!

Plus...
HE'S ALIVE AS WE SPEAK!
So this whole thing is stupid.

One has to wonder how McCartney feels about this dumb rumor...
