This song is a description of society at the time. Dances were really big at the time and it describes the way that a man would go into the dance and look around for someone to dance with.

John and Paul wrote this while Paul was still in high school and John was at art school and they skipped classes and started messing around with chords and lyrics in Paul's living room. Paul originally came up with the lyrics "well she was just seventeen, never been a beauty queen" John liked where he was going but knew the second part of that HAD to go.

I think that song song is about a guy who goes to a dance and sees a girl standing there. She's not dancing with anybody and no one has asked her so I guess she's shy. So he decides to be all nice and goes and asks her! Then she likes him beacouse he was so nce to her and she likes her, too! So how can they dance with other people when they like each other and they know it?
