This song may have no real meaning... none of us REALLY know what went through Kurt Cobain's mind when he wrote it. It could've been the drugs, that's true... or it could have a deeper meaning.
Either way, it has taken on meaning far beyond what he maybe even expected, as an anthem of apathy and, well... "teen spirit".
Has anybody stopped at looked at how "teen spirit" could be a play on "team spirit"? Because, while teams focus on the collective goals of a group, many teenagers (particularly from Cobain's generation, Generation x) are focused more on themselves and their own goals. This isn't always nessesarily a bad thing, after all for many people adolescence is a reflective, often troubled time. Teens are usually trying to figure out who they are and how they fit into the greater puzzle that is life, the world, and the society they live in.
At any rate, in this song we see a very strong theme of apathy and sarcasm- "load up on guns, bring your friends/ it's fun to lose, and to pretend" is not encouraging any kids to actually commit violent acts, like some other people have suggested. It's actually sort of sarcasitcally commenting on how adults tend to assume when teens are together (or alone for that matter) outside of adult supervision, they've got to be up to no good. There has been a persistent stereotype (especialy prevalent in the early 90s) of young people being primarily troublemakers and violence-prone. (Today's stereotype of young people, now in 2006, in contrast, is that they are primarily troubled, self-centered, and are in this state because they have been screwed up by society).
So, by describing this "little group" that we only know consists of "a mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido", who seem to be largely hanging around in the dark doing whatever (sex, drugs, or maybe just hanging out), he's pointing out the tendancy of teens to hang in such groups.
Obviously, "libido" is a reference to sex, and possibly also "with the lights out, it's less dangerous", but once again this is sort of pointing out how teenagers are widely considered to be over-sexed and full of "raging hormones" that cause them to basically try to screw everyone and everything they can- and how, of course, this view is ridiculous.
And "here we are now, entertain us" is a reference to Generation X and how it was the first one to seem to demand constant entertainment.
"I feel stupid and contagious" could be both a reference to
"peer pressure", that mirage-like condition that can cause people to do stupid stuff with their friends they otherwise would never do, and the pressures of conforming to a group, and this could also be a subtle reference to sexually transmitted diseases, and how teens are constantly lectured about the dangers of unprotected sex (and sex in general) and how they will probably contract an STD and die or something.
The whole "whatever, nevermind" thing could be considered an allusion to ADD and how it leads to short attention spans, or how when teens try to communicate with adults and are misunderstood, they often end up just saying "whatever" or "nevermind...". It could also be a reference to Nevermind, which I think may have been an album they put out, but since I am not a giant Nirvana fan I don't know for sure.
It also could be about apathy and just blocking out things you don't understand, which could tie to in the whole "with the lights out, it's less dangerous" thing, which could be maintaining that knowledge is dangerous and apathy is considered by some to be the best way to go.
In general, the last poster said this song could be summed up as "Generation X" and I think she was right.
This song is sort of a commentary on Generation X in it's teenage years (most of the people from this generation are hitting their thirties by now) and how they forever re-defined being a teenager in America, but how some things remain the same and are pretty much universal themes of adolescene, while at the same time poking fun at various conventions, myths, and stereotypes.
Or it could just be the drugs talking.
It's up to you as an individual to decide.

Meaning is not derived from the author but from the interpreter.
Sheep- you are no sheperd you are part of the flock
Kurt left the flock and failed to become an existentialist.
He saw the world without outside influence he had true choice.
The truth is what you make other people believe.
Be[lie]ve me.

As an artist myself, I can tell you. There are no words for word sake. Especially written (words produce after a thorough and complete thought process) and definitely not in conjucture with art. Words in of themselves express, everything else is color added to words. Even in communication or MIScommunication words have meaning.
My interpretation:
The song is about young love and the discovery of it's many facets through the mind (Spirit) of a teen. "Load up (ON) Guns" =[Sex drive/libido] "brings your friends" =[as targets] "it's fun to lose & pretend" =[heart break masked with sex]" "she's overboard" =[in love with him] "I know a dirty word" =[LOVE] "with the light out" =[there's nothing more than you can physically feel] "I feel stupid and contagious" =[he's having sex (contaminating by touch) without discrimination or limits producing the side effects of mixed babies] "I'm worst at what I do best" =[teen-sex, not the best or most experienced kind to have] ="our little group" =[teen parents]" =And I forget Just what it takes" =[to capture real love] ="And yet I guess it makes me smile
I found it hard. Its hard to find"........ [LOVE]!!!!!!!!!

The band and Kurt himself never claimed there was any religious meaning to their lyrics. However, this was still popularly asserted regardless of the actually meaning or intent. Cobain even being hailed as a “prophet” by some fans.
In the religious interpretation the lyrics in “Smells like Teen Spirit” are believed to be written as a climax play on the Biblical book of Revelations Chapter 12 verse 9 in particular. The Chapter deals with “Satan and his angels” being cast down to the earth as a prelude to the end of the world and final judgment.
The lyrics “here we are now, entertain us, I feel stupid and contagious” being interpreted as Satan and his fallen angels using Cobain as a puppet to announce their arrival and fulfillment of the Rev. 12 prophecy. The line “hello hello how low” is assumed to be a double word play on “hell oh hell oh how low” thus containing a hidden double meaning. When listening to the song “hello hello how low” seems to morph to emphasize “hell oh hell oh” at the end of the verse by Kurt‘s inflection.
To expand on this interpretation the two note guitar line is thought to be the two notes of the classic doorbell (ding dong), hence Satan using the band to “ring earth‘s doorbell” via Kurt's guitar. The line “a mulatto An albino A mosquito My Libido” is thought to mention the three members of Nirvana but give credit for the song's intensity or power to “Satan and his angels” who are simply using the band for puppets. The line “with the lights out it’s less dangerous” is thought to describe the hidden nature contained within meaning of the tune. The ending line “oh well whatever never-mind” is thought to be another double word play on “never mind” driving home the point that although Satan is now confined to the earth his rebellion will never cease. The line "it's fun to lose and to pretend" also seems to fit in with this interpretation. The line “oh know I know the/a dirty word” is thought to be a reference to John 1:1 which “the Word” is another name for God.
The book of Revelations is the source of the infamous “666” being the number of the devil, although Cobain makes no direct reference to the number. However, many other bands have. Iron Maiden actually reads directly from the book’s text.
This type of lyrical interpretation is well known in the rock world and actually started as far back as Blues player Robert Johnson [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Johnson_%28musician%29] claiming he sold his soul to the devil to play his music thus giving him “supernatural ability” to play. Elvis Presley was also chastised by religious groups as being the “devil’s music” and even banned from some radio stations. John Lennon of the Beatles ran into trouble once with when he stated in an interview “it’s as if the Beatles are more popular than Jesus Christ.” Although he meant no insult the statement resulted in some religious elements calling for the burning of Beatles records. Surprisingly this had a positive effect on record sales as other came out to support the group. It was thought that this resulted in other groups intentionally taunting Christians with lyrics playing especially into Revelations Chapter 12. The Rolling Stones being among the first to openly play on this reaction. It is not far fetched that Cobain may have wished to continue this established rock tradition in a enigmatic manner thus giving this Christian interpretation some merit
To add fuel to the religious interpretation Cobain was accused on national television by one well known religious author for being involved in Satanic worship [http://www.jesus-is-savior.com/Evils%20in%20America/Rock-n-Roll/kurt_cobain.htm] .

Lol you noobs.. Kurt mentioned in his supposed suicide note about whn the lights go out, the crowd roars for entertainment. This song is about the spirit of his crowd, not a perfume, or anything else. He also mentions that he never really enjoyed entertaining fans. Read his suicide note, it will all be clear then.

Heh I don't know why the second post got such a low rating.
Sounds right; especially after reading this post from the "lithium" interpretations:
"I just noticed that people expect more of the thematic angle with our music, you know, they always wanna read into it, and before I was just using pieces of poetry and just garble, just garbage, you know, just stuff that just would spew out of me at the time, and a lot of times when I write lyrics it just at the last second because I'm really lazy... And then I find myself having to come up with explanations..." <<-- kurdt about his lyrics in 1993

Well for one, if anyone knew anything about Kurt Cobain or even had a glimpse of what he was about would not even try and interpret this song.....He was such a complex person and so original....he wrote about what was on his head and what he had on his mind....the song is not about sex, teenagers, although I have heard that the deodorant thing is true....that was just inspiration on the song...that doesn't mean every lyric he wrote came from that one situation....Kurt Cobain may be dead but he had so much influence on today.....Yes he might have been on a lot of drugs, not a good role model.....but he was the most musically induced musician of this time....he played to play and have fun....not to make millions like the people of our age do....So before anyone writes another thing about nirvana suckin, Kurt being a druggy wash up, or anything else dogging him....your think about what he did for the youth and music scene today....all I got to say*

This song is about how the singer's generation was pretty much useless. Ok, there they are, now what? He feels as if this is a disiese, and that it may be contagious. I made that up right now.

People need to stop thinking so hard about the meaning of this song and just take it for what it is. Yes, we all know how Cobain got the name for the song, but nobody knows exactly what he meant by this song. Every line of this song can be interpreted in multiple ways. It's a great song, that's all that really matters...

Everyone is saying the same goddamn thing over and over. To address a few of you douchebags: "Smells Like Teen Spirit" single-handedly killed 80's hair-metal. THANK GOD.
He is talking about some of the stupid things that teens do, or the myths that they start, like, "with the lights out, it's less dangerous." I don't know exactly what he's referring to. This song also has an anti-establishment edge to it. For example: I think some verses of the song are about how teens are kept in line by their parents, school, or other authority figures. The reason I say this is because the music video takes place in a school's gym, and because he makes it seem like a bad thing to know "a dirty word." TAKE A LOOK AT THE VIDEO FOR THIS SONG IF YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT. I suggest using GOOGLE VIDEO to find it.

There are a lot of different interpretations... I think this is because people here a song and get different things from it based on how they feel...or whatever else is going on in there crazy lives... My crazy life is telling me this song is talking about people who fool themselves and pretend...eg. jocks, cheerleaders, people who just follow because they don't want to be different..."Load up on guns and bring your friends, It's fun to lose and to pretend"..."She's over bored and self assured", I think that is talking about... a girl who fools here self and pretends..."Here we are now, entertain us" I think this is for people who watch those pretenders and are entertained, like my self.
i also think because this was Nirvana's first (kinda, if you NEVER ever heard of them) HUGE hit... I think it was letting everyone know that they were not writing music for the jocks or preps.

firstoff the lyrics on this page are wrong. It's "she's over-bored and self assured." one of the most important lines.... It's "hello, hello, hello, how low.."
Ok, coming from a kid who loves Nirvana I have spent hours on end trying to interpret kurt's lyrics. like only a kid can.
the "load up on guns bring your friends, its fun to lose and to pretend" refers to peer pressure. no doubt.
the "she's over-bored and self-assured" refers to the adult idea that teens are sexually active.
the chorus, (with the lights out....) also refers to probably...sex. plainly said. what backs up this claim is the "a mullato, an albino" meaning it doesn't matter who you do it with and the "a mosquito, my libido" meaning an itching for sexual desire.
Many think that Cobain may have been just stoned when he wrote this but personally I think that if he were stoned, it would have been like "Blew" or something of that sort.
"I'm worse at what I do best and for this gift I feel blessed" may refer to his opinion that "his music wasn't good enough but he was thankful" or that he simply thought of himself as a bad musician.
The "a denial" part which is left out at the given lyrics above could refer to "a denial to peer pressure" or "a denial to parents" or simply...."a denial."
