I have been told (although it is not substantiated officially by the band mebers) that this song focuses on aviation travel.

I read Kiedis's autobiography about two months ago, and I recall that he mentioned about this song and it's meaning. I could be wrong, and I usually am, but I think it had to do with a relationship he was in (or maybe it was another song)...well, whatever. I would interpret this song as a love for music type of message, and personifying music as this love. In the first verse, I could see it as a way of him telling his love one about him falling into pieces (maybe a reference to Kiedis's drug problem at the time) and how he wants her to "slap him" out of it.

The chorus was actually written by Flea, and the song's based on an old gospel song "Jesus is my Aeroplane" that Flea listened to when he was younger. He's not religious in that sense any more, but he feels that music is his Aeroplane.

I agree with "anonymous". This song is all about how music is thier "aeroplane". The song kind of talks about the feeling that you get with music. It kind of ends all the stress of life. That was a horrible way of describing it, I'm sorry, I just don't know what to say. Sorry.

This song is about drugs and the pleasure of music.

The 1st time I heard this song, I too thought it was about drugs. But you really have to listen to the words and understand them clearly, "I like pleasure spiked with pain and music is my aeroplane." clearly portrays the messege that music is their aeroplane and what puts them in a better place. Away from the difficulties of everyday lifestyle.

2nd guy, I think your thinking about either "by the way" or "I could have lied" ( they both are)

anyway..... the song may not not be completely about it but he was on heroin during this song after 7 and 1/2 years of being clean and that it revealed in the lyrics "Sitting in my kitchen...I'm turning into dust again...My melancholy baby...The star of mazzy must...Push her voice inside of me" which reffers to kiedis's kitchen where he did most of his drugs.

if you agree with me post a 1 at the top of your interprition

Its obvious Kiedis was clean at the time of this song and he is saying rather than drugs getting him high its muic so there is no need for drugs.

In Ak's book he said he was using OHM to try and tell the other band mates that he was using again through the lyrics..

It's mostly about how much music means to them and how it's their aeroplane and I heard, too, that it was Flea's idea. However there is a lot of drug related issues. Keidis was abusing drugs heavily at this time and he used his songs as an output for that.

'Sitting in my kitchen, hey girl, I'm turning into dust again'
That's about Keidis getting high all the time and pissing his girlfriend off.

'I'm overcoming gravity, it's easy when you're sad to be'
Overcoming gravity is obvious, he's getting high is what he means. It's easy when you're sad to be means he didn't want to but he couldn't help himself, in a way it was a cry for help.
