Standing in line
To see the show tonight
And there's a light on
Heavy glow
By the way I tried to say
I'd be there... waiting for <...

In this song, anthony is talking about his time in the band before becoming fully clean for the first time. "by the way I tried to say i'd be there" is a reference to his irregularities when it came to pitching for rehearsals and shows, which eventually ended up with him being fired from the band briefly. It also is another song that refers to the enigmatic "dani" (as in "dani california", and in this song,"dani the girl that's singing songs to me beneath the marquee")i think this is one of the songs that best sums up rhcp's funk and rock ethos.

The song describes the L.A. scene on any given night at any place - the music, the queues, the lights, the people...

I think the song is about him and his drug addiction about how he is nearly beaten the addiction " by the way I called to say I will be there", Dani is a made up characters which represents all the girls he knows, maby he is trying to say they helped him fight his addiction "dani the girl is singing songs to me me beneath the marque". This is what I think

Oh yeah right Ms. Kiedis, of course that's wot it means. no this song is about wot would've happened if rhcp hadn't made it and weren't famous. when its like 'dani the girl is singing songs to me' its like anthony can't sing but his girlfriend sings to him and when its like 'standing in line to see the show tonight' that's about them having to queue (shock horror) to see someone else's concert cause their not famous. So mz kiedis you need 2 sort your ideas out.

i believe that "dani" is not a real person in this song but drugs because think about it why the hell would he be beneath a marquee with a girl singing songs to him I believe that dani is drugs and he's down there by himself doing drugs instead if being where he says hed try to be that's what I think...

Dani is the "girl" that help him through tough times. She was always there for him. Whether it was with her singing songs or robbing banks.

According to NME magazine, Dani (at least in "Dani California") is created as a tribute to an old roadie who traveled with the band in their early days, Danny C

I might be wrong but I think it's about him doing drugs with a member of a Mexican gang under a bridge which is also shown in the video of by the way and under the bridge.

You guys are complete idiots. This song is the last bit of Dani's life, and how he would have gone to see her musical show if she hadn't died. Bit obvious isn't it:
Standing in line
To see the show tonight
And there's a light on
Heavy glow
By the way I tried to say
I'd be there... waiting for

Me = right.
You = wrong.

Yeah you guys are completely wrong...the guy in the song is waiting in line somewhere(maybe movie theater) for a girlfriend that he has a not so good relationship with, then this dani girl comes(possibly a hooker) and "sings her songs" to him and he's faced with the choice to wait or go with dani-"overload" then the random crazy shit gets said. He talks about how good she is at tempting him, and how he has to do it quickly, he even refers to a trick. more random crazy tings

I think this song is about what would have happened if the band wasn't famous..like the part with the blood bath may mean the way they lived their life before being famous..

I love this song and all the meaning behind it. Its amazing how he describes all the things around him and how they make him feel or influence his look on the world.
