Submitted by: kcp I don't know for sure how I interpret the song, but I would like to add some thoughts about the existing interpretation. I think the references to following the rants of another mortals are valid. We really need to think about how much we are willing to follow the lead of another mortals when it comes to religious interpretations of the Bible or anything else that happens to us in modern times. When it comes down to it, each and every person has a clue as to what is right. It's just a matter of following through and doing what is right. You can take advantage, or you can contribute. It comes down to that. I don't care what God you pray to, it comes down to that.
Submitted by: drumx7 I really love this song by TOOL...its one of those ones that really makes me think. its the type of song where all the effects by danney in the backround really set a mood to the song. what I think Maynard is tryin to say in the first couple lines is almost like the story of scrooge and the three ghosts who take him to a different perspective to see life. from the lines....

Submitted by: narduzzi1120 I think this song is about how some people have taken the idea of peace and anti-violence too seriously. When he says "These are the cries of the carrots," he is showing somebody who has taken it to an extreme.
Submitted by: slipknotkid1 I don't really care about the first part because it's not to be taken seriously, but the final words at the end are..."It was daylight when you woke up in your ditch. You looked up at your sky then. That made blue be your color. You had your knife there with you too. When you stood up there was goo all over your clothes. Your hands were sticky. You wiped them on your grass, so now your color was green. Oh Lord, why did everything always have to keep changing like this. You were already getting nervous again. Your head hurt and it rang when you stood up. Your head was almost empty. It always hurt you when you woke up like this. You crawled up out of your ditch onto your gravel road and began to walk, waiting for the rest of your mind to come back to you. You can see the car parked far down the road and you walked toward it. 'If God is our Father,' you thought, 'then Satan must be our cousin.' Why didn't anyone else understand these important things? You got to your car and tried all the doors. They were locked. It was a red car and it was new. There was an expensive leather camera case laying on the seat. Out across your field, you could see two tiny people walking by your woods. You began to walk towards them. Now red was your color and, of course, those little people out there were yours too."
Submitted by: anonymous Yes is a personal look into a serial killer but why would it be included and why would it be deemed worthy to be in a Tool song. The realization the person has of "satan is our cousin" and his comment about "why does everything have to keep changing like this" seem arbitrary. I'm not sure why the entire last part or either of these interesting thoughts would be included in a song about how death feeds life. Death feeds the life of a serial killer, and then what? Why was he waking up in a field anyway. Why the headache. The goo I think is probably blood but what is the reason or history for anything else in this passage. I'm kinda wondering why everyone is transfixed on the life feeds on life part and the intro with the "cries of the carrots" instead of the more cryptic and confusing part of the song, the end.
Submitted by: anonymous Doesn't the word "disgustipated" tell you something about the meaning of this song. I hadn't listened to this song since I was in high school and recently listened to it again, after becoming a vegetarian. I really related to this song when I was a teenager. I felt really alienated when I looked around the world I lived in and everything revolves around death. This song made me feel slightly less insane for looking around and seeing billboards with piles of paddy's and slogans like "juicy" on them. As for the part about the Cry of the Carrots. I've heard/read about the possibility of plants having a conscience. I don't expect you to take me to seriously when I say this but I know Maynard's lyrics on Lateralus and some from Aenima talk about the Mayans and their beliefs that all life is interconnected to one consciousness "experiencing itself subjectively". Just FOOD for thought.
Submitted by: Chaos Most of the guys here I agree with. The beginning is about how anyone such as he calls himself Reverend Maynard can preach to people. And as far as the middle life feeds on life could either be a serial killer or making sarcastic poke at saying life feeds on life which is shown, so the killer is saying this applies to humans too. Which it doesn't humans don't need to kill other humans to live. The final bit was a recorded message was that of a person who had seen red so was obviously a killer or had problems.
Submitted by: anonymous I don't think its the mind of a serial killer, I think its the mind of a drug addict, I have woken up with with world spinning, not knowing what was what, looking around wondering were I am, how did I get here, this makes no sense etc. Then discover the world stretches beyond the two meters in front of your face. Headache is comedown. when you wake up high its incredibly confusing, but that doesn't explain the thing about the knife, or the goo(blood)..
Submitted by: anonymous Is it a coincidence that in the Simpson's Movie, the head of the EPA refers to the town of Springfield as "Carrots?"
