Tool - Third Eye Song MeaningsLyrics:(Intro by comedian Bill Hicks) Dreaming of that face again. It's bright and blue and shimmering. Grinning wide and comforting me wit... (See the rest of these lyrics) Submitted by: anonymous Added: 2006-03-28 10:23:48   Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() Its quite simple!
Submitted by: anonymous What I got out of this song was a story about a guy who, while on drugs, met an "interesting character". (Dreaming of that face again...)
Submitted by: anonymous After reading the interpretation of "jimmy" I'm beginning to think that this song is about finding yourself (in MJK's case himself). Hear me out now.... "a child's rhyme stuck in my head, it say's that life is but a dream... I've spent so many years in question to find I've known this all along" Going back to himself as a child, before his mother's sickness, when the world seemed, for lack of a better word, "perfect". "So glad to see you once again, I thought that you were hiding from me, and you thought that I had run away, chasing the tail of Dogma (smoke and reason)" Using drugs, hallucenogens mainly, to find yourself and open your Third Eye. When I used, even if I was with people, I was by myself trying to find myself, in those moments my mind was spun into an accelerated pace of pulling memories together and trying to piece myself back together with a better understanding of myself. "Shrouding all the ground around me, is this holy crow above, darkest holes within a memory, as blue as our new second sun, I stick my hand into the shadow, to pull the pieces from the sand, which I attempt to reassemble, to see just who I might have been." MJK might be saying here that he would like to see what would have happened if his mother never had her stroke, would he have turned out differently? "I do not recognize the vessel, but the eyes seem so familiar, like phospherescent desert buttons, to see just who I might have been." His own eyes remind him of himself, how did he get there though, through drugs, desert buttons are an alternate term for peyote. I don't believe that this song is not just about drugs, but using drugs to find yourself, to enlighten yourself.... Similiar to Buddhists. They use other ways to enlighten themselves but some paths still lead to the same end.
Submitted by: anonymous its an O.B.E.(out of body experience) he is talking about this experience on the other plain. This is done while "prying open his third eye."
Submitted by: CleanDave This song is about drug addiction. Its about a dude hooked on some kind of drug, Maybe Ex, probably not, but the bright blue face reminds me of a kind of Ex pill. Anyway, this dude is chasing the effect of the drug trying to get that first effect that will never happen. Hes trying to pry open his third eye instead of just open it. Yeah, I think this song is about drug chasing, Its a lot like Rosetta Stoned on 10,000 days, which is obviously about a bad LSD trip.
Submitted by: anonymous Um, hi... The entire Ænima cd is dedicated to bill hicks. And most of the songs are in some way related to bill hicks. Bill hicks was a very spiritual person who also was deeply involved with psychedelic drugs much like Maynard james keenan. Eulogy.. Not about jesus. About bill hicks. Harry manback... Ya that's a character in bill hicks stand up. Aenima the song itself.. "see you down in arizona bay" and also the holographic image of las angeles sinking because of an earthquake... Ya also part of bill hicks material. He has a cd called arizona bay. It's about how he hates california for its "mall-consciousness". And finally, third eye. Bill hicks constantly referenced this ancient belief. "watching tv is like taking black spray paint to your third eye" -bill hicks. It's also about don juan in carlos casteneda's book "the original teachings of don juan". He was a shaman who ate a lot of peyote in the desert with carlos. Carlos basically modeled his life after the shaman philosopher. Maynard's reference to the holy crow above me, that's from the book. The second blue sun is also in the book. And most importantly "like phosforescent desert buttons" ...Peyote also glimmers in moonlight. Its all referenced to bill hicks. But yes you can make your opinions about the experience he's describing, much like he did when he was writing it. Its the ultimate salute to the acid loving spiritual comedian-philosopher bill hicks.
Submitted by: Toolio I don't think that this songs has anything to do with drug addictions, experiences, etc. I'd rather believe that this song is about maynards father. It's saying that his father never thought much of him before, until he became famous. Now his father is saying, "hey look! That's my son..." and Maynard is saying, "oh great. But where were you then?"
Submitted by: anonymous Ok everyone here is thinking to much. Tool itself is a feeling I don't listen to Tool... I let it run through me.
Submitted by: anonymous Whoever you were that you mentioned carlos, you are a fucking genious. Third eye means an altered state of mind, seeing all things from a different perspectave. Moving the assemblage point perhaps?
Submitted by: kmirani In hindu belief, the third eye is represented with a red dot, "bendhi". It refers to your consciousness. Open up that third eye, consciousness, and don't feed into maya, illusion, for it is just a distraction. You have to think for yourself and not be persuaded. The first time that I heard this song I thought that it was about releasing your anger and not backing away from it, because anger is such a clear and beautiful emotion. In hindu texts lord Brahma created Shiva from his third eye when he was angry thus creating the god of ignorance, destruction, anger;Shiva.
Submitted by: anonymous This song could have to do with any of these meanings and just like the name "Tool" they are a device used in obtaining something what ever that may be. listen to it love it and feel how you want about it. MJK has his own view about it but it doesn't have to be the same as yours.
Submitted by: anonymous this song is about using drugs and such to pry open up your "3rd eye" and see whats really going on in the world and how everythign really is, and appreciate everything and look at it differently. After using many hallucinogens myself and listening to thsi song this song makes total sense. My favorite
Submitted by: anonymous It sounds like the entire first part of the song is meant to sound like a hallucination, especially when you turn it up really loud and can hear all the little sounds and noises in the background. I figured the song is about how drugs prevent you from seeing the world for how it really is, and the only way to "pry open your third eye" is to quit the drugs.

Submitted by: Djames2 The song is about taking in to your own view of reality. The freedom of it disregarding the governments view of it. Their own view of "comfort and order," It illustrates the state ones mindstate is in when they discover the path to what their own reality is. The natural way, its like a feeling of euphoria and freedom breaking away from regulations of others. like your mind urges to be used as your own meaning of reality, but struggles to get there b/c of the 'order of a normal society' the government created.
Submitted by: anonymous The song is about expanding your mind, and breaking the polluted consciousness instilled by the world. It's about opening your eyes to new realms and possibilities, whether they are drug induced or by spiritual means. It's about realizing we are all born with the gift of real truth, that the gift of the universe is written in our DNA. We have the chance to understand it all, if we so wish, by prying open our third eye.
Submitted by: anonymous When I was driving home one night may I add that I was high which might mean I'm an idiot but I was listening to this song and you know when the song slows then picks up with the repeating of
Submitted by: anonymous The guy who mentions Bill Hicks and Don Juan is on the ball as far as interpretation goes. But with Tool, you need to take the song how you want.
