Hang Lyrics

She grabs her magazines
She packs here things and she goes
She leaves the pictures hanging on the wall, she burns all
Her notes and she knows, she's been here too few years
To feel this old

He smokes his cigarette, he stays outside 'til...

Everyone is going to have an opinion on what they think this and every song means and they aren't wrong. The beauty of music is that it get the listener. It understands them and the song means something personal to them.

Music has been the 1 and only constant in my life and has saved me and broken me many times. With that being said I'll tell you my opinion of what the song means, bit understand this is only my personal opinion. I've never met any members of Matchbox20 or any of the original composters or authors of the music they've recorded.

It's about a breakup, yes. It's also about feeling so low that are considering suicide, but the song is recorded in a way that the listener doesn't know if it's the man or the woman considering suicide. 1 is considering suicide and the other is just going to hang (remain where they are and not deal with it right now)

"She got reasons he don't" this could be reasons to live or reasons to die. I think this was written beautifully, but if I ever met Rob or any other member of the band the first question I'd ask is if it were the man or the woman that wanted to die. I guess I'll never know.

It’s a sarcastic suicide note written into a thoughtful acoustic song. There are many different personal interpretations of this song that could greatly differ from the artist’s own definition.

To me, this song is all about complacency in a relationship. They had all these aspirations and hopes but eventually it fell into a cycle that they couldn’t escape. So they hanged.

She then makes a change in her life and moves on from the routine, trying to achieve those things that their relationship was indirectly or directly getting in the way of.

And concurrently, the guy in the relationship is hurt. Saying you’re okay to just leave me behind while you chase what we had envisioned together. He is bitter in the end saying, “well if it’s the same for you, I’ll just hang”. Go live your life while I settle for what I’m comfortable with.

He had mentioned on TV that this song was about his mother having cancer and on her way to the hospital to deal with it, and his going through it with her. “Hang” refers to him hanging out with her while she goes through,” if it’s all the same with her”.

You find someone you think you want , but you don’t take the time to really get to understand her so you just hang .. because your to self centered to .. find yourself

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

    Its a
About your comfort zone..or where do u go when its not here. ? Is it real? The pain we feel? Or how we digest it as it comes??

I think this song might be about Thomas' parents' divorce. They divorced when he was young, and the fact that there is both a "he," a "she," and an "I" who all seem very upset in this song. I think the "I" refers to Thomas himself when he was younger, as evidenced by the fact that he feels as though he is being left to hang, forgotten and victimized, in the wake of his parents' conflict.

This song has nothing to do with suicide. It is about 2 people breaking up that everyone thought would last forever. They were the "couple" that every circle of friends has...you think they will always be together no matter what. The girl got sick of always being put on the back burner and finally had enough and broke up with him. FYI....they got married and have 2 little boys now :)

she grabs her magazines to go to her chemo treatment
He cannot smoke there he stays outside
    she is dying
    he cannot change that
they hang the chemo... he hangs out
If its the same to you...
She got reasons.... He don't... she is the one dying but the chemo is hanging... maybe .. and he will stay and hang with her.
She is too young to die

she leaves alright but when the lyrics speak of hang it is not literal, it refers to him staying, I do not think it is about the end of a rope but that he will be hanging out & be there if or when she decides to come back.

It's about them fighting and the girl leaving.while the guy sits there and watches her leave hes thinking that they've been through too much to let it all go to waste. "Funny how I didn't see it all..until she grabbed up her coat and she goes" he didn't know what he had till it was gone.

    She grabs her magazines
She packs her things and she goes
She leaves the pictures hanging on the wall, she burns all
Her notes and she knows, she's been here too few years
    To feel this old

To me this part is about the end of a relationship. She left and he just watched her go.

He smokes his cigarette, he stays outside 'til it's gone
If anybody ever had a heart, he wouldn't be alone
He knows, she's been here too few years, to be gone

This reinforces my thought from before.

And we always say, it would be good to go away, someday
But if there's nothing there to make things change
If it's the same for you I'll just hang

To me, this is saying that they always spoke about going away and maybe fixing the relationship but never did, and now she's gone, and he becomes depressed and hangs himself.

The trouble understand, is she got reasons he don't
Funny how he couldn't see at all, 'til she grabbed up her coat
And she goes, she's been here too few years to take it all in stride
But still it's much too long, to let hurt go(you let her go)

This is him blaming himself for her leaving, further convincing me that this song is about him committing suicide.

And we always say, it would be good to go away, someday
But if there's nothing there to make things change
If it's the same for you I'll just hang
    The same for you
Well I always say, It would be good to go away
But if things don't work out like we think
And there's nothing there to ease this ache
But if there's nothing there to make things change
If it's the same for you I'll just hang

Well, obviously its a song about breaking up... And she's moving out. "shes been here two few years to feel this old" means that she/they have been through A LOT in the past few years.."and we always say it would be good to go away someday" they always talked about getting away from it, whether for a short or long period of time "if its the same for you I'll just hang" but instead they just stay there and stay stuck in their relationship. "well if ots the same to you I'll just hang" says to me he seems comfortable with the relationship being stagnant.

Beautiful song, whether it was autobiographical or written for someone else. Rob is one of the more talented writers and singers of the 90's.
