Mumford & Sons: Hold on to What You Believe Meaning
Hold on to What You Believe Lyrics
That I won't let you down
And I, I can't promise you
That I will be the only one around when your hope falls down
But we're young,
Open flowers in the windy fields of this war-torn world.
And love,
This city...

The song is about a guy who is currently facing darkness or a dark phase in his life, because of this he is thinking of a relationship he ran away from when he was scared. The relationship caused him an extra burden and he was scared as he was falling in love with this person much faster than he expected. He’s now questioning if he was wrong for leaving, but he goes on reassure his choices by saying he was thinking clearly in the “light” when he left.
There is some confusion as he essentially call this love an angel and a light in his life by saying he’s not whole when she’s not near and the halo is disappearing. My guess is that she wasn’t the problem and he is saying he would continue making the same decision to leave because he’s not ready and would do nothing different.
