All you people who haven't read the book shouldn't be saying, "Oh it can't be about that." You can't really talk about something you know nothing about.
"Invisible Monsters" by Chuck Palahniuk is my favourite book, and I've read it several times. If you actually read the book, you'd see that it is EXACTLY what this song is about.
    It's not about unwanted pregnancy.
    It's not about the prom.
It's not about other random teenage problems.
    It is about Invisible Monsters.
This is also not the only song that references a Chuck Palahniuk book.
The title of their song "They Only Difference Between Martyrdom And Suicide Is Press Coverage" is a quote from Palaniuk's book "Survivor".
In the song "London Beckoned Songs About Money Written By Machines", the line that begins, "Just for the record, the weather today..." is borrowed from Palahniuk's book "Diary".
Ryan Ross has said that he is a huge Palahniuk fan.
It's quite obvious that it's influenced his writing.
Go read the books if you don't believe me. It'll become blatantly obvious to you.

i see most of you know it's based off a book called Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahniuk. If I repeat something from someone's translation, sorry, but here's what I think.
Well, she's not bleeding on the ballroom floor
Just for the attention. (the on bleeding on the ballroom floor in the book is a famous model who loves attention)
    Cause that's just ridiculously on.
Well, she sure is gonna get it (evie, the main characters best frien is really angry and upset and has a shotgun)
Here's the setting (the book says about scene setting)
Fashion magazines line the walls now (FASHION)
The walls line the bullet holes (Evie has a shotgun)

    Have some composure
Where is your posture? (they're all models who have to be perfect)
    Oh, no, no
    You're pulling the trigger
    Pulling the trigger
All wrong (the main character shoots her own jaw off, but her best friend thinks her ex-fiance did it and vise-versa)
    [x2]

Give me envy, give me malice, give me a-a-attention
Give me envy, give me malice, baby, give me a break! (the main character has a photographer in her head, giving her emotions to feel)
When I say "Shotgun", you say "Wedding"
"Shotgun", "Wedding", "Shotgun", "Wedding" (it's evie's wedding and she has a shotgun)

    She didn't choose this role
But she'll play it and make it sincere
So you cry, you cry (the main character believes you don't make a big deal out of something untill someone's around to see it)
(Give me a break) (one of the things the hypothetical photographer says)
But they believe it from the tears
And the teeth right down to the blood
At her feet (the hospital believes someone else shot off her jaw, and there was blood pooling at her feet and she says about her teeth falling to the passenger seet of her car)
    Boys will be boys
Hiding in estrogen and wearing Aubergine dreams (brandy is the famous model shot on the ballroom floor but she is actually a guy and she wears aubergine dreams make up)
    (Give me a break)

    Have some composure
    Where is your posture?
    Oh, no, no
    You're pulling the trigger
    Pulling the trigger
    All wrong
    [x2]

Come on this is screaming "Photo op." op... (perfect dramatic scene for a photographer)
    Come on
    Come on
    This is screaming
    This is screaming
    This is screaming "Photo op."

    Boys will be boys, baby
    Boys will be boys
    Boys will be boys, baby
    Boys will be boys

Give me envy, give me malice, give me a-a-attention
Give me envy, give me malice, baby, give me a break!
When I say "Shotgun", you say "Wedding"
    "Shotgun", "Wedding", "Shotgun", "Wedding"

    Boys will be boys
Hiding in estrogen and boys will be boys
    Boys will be boys
Hiding in estrogen and wearing Aubergine dreams

Well, I've read the book invisible monsters, the first chapter is set in a manor house at Evie's wedding. Evie shoots brandy, but there could be two meanings with this.

Either they are at a photoshoot and the lyrics "have some composure where is your posture, oh no no, your pulling the trigger pulling the trigger all wrong" is the photographer shouting at Evie those lines, or Evie has really shot brandy, which would make more since as it happens at the end of the book as well, same setting but a real shooting. So the lines "when I say shotgun you say wedding" would come from that.

The lines "give me envy give me malice give me attention" etc are from the 1st chapter also, but come up throughout the book where the main character thinks about what a photographer would say (give me attention, flash) flash = the camara flashing.

The verses, I think, are just Panic!'s interpretation of the main character's feelings but from another persons view etc (read the book this will all make more sense).

"Boys will be boys hiding in estrogen, and wearing Aubergine Dreams," Aubergine Dreams is the make up that Brandy wears in the book, and boys will be boys hiding in estrogen. If you read the book and think about this, the word hiding explains it all. At the end of the book we find out Brandy is actually a man, and estrogen is the hormone that would effectively change you into a women, therefor boys will be boys hiding in estrogen: Brandy is a boy, although she is hiding in estrogen (if you want to think of it that way).

"Photo op screaming photo op" the main character the invisible monster, was a beautiful model, but driving down the freeway one day she has her jaw shot off by a gun and that's when she becomes ugly and an invisible monster. She has surgery and a new jaw put in, so this is the only simularity I can find about the lyrics "photo op"

That's about it, a very confusing book but the best book I've ever read, go buy it.

I have a completely different interpretation...

Well, she's not bleeding on the ballroom floor
    Just for the attention
    'Cause that's just ridiculous...ly odd
Well, she sure is going to get it
    Here's the setting
Fashion magazines line the walls now
The walls line the bullet holes

**A girl who was invited to a wedding witnesses the bride being shot. She claims, while the bride is unconscious, that "she's only doing this for the attention." The song is told from the point of view of the groom himself.

    Have some composure
    And where is your posture?
    Oh, no, no
    You're pulling the trigger
    Pulling the trigger
    All wrong
    Have some composure
    And where is your posture?
    Oh, no, no
    You're pulling the trigger
    Pulling the trigger
    All wrong

**The groom, who shot his bride, remembers what he said to his accomplice about how he needs to stand up tall and fix how he pulls the trigger. These lines might also be spoken from the girl's friend, who says that she's instigating this fight in the wrong way.

Give me envy, give me malice, give me your attention
Give me envy, give me malice, baby, give me a break!
When I say shotgun, you say wedding
    Shotgun, wedding, shotgun, wedding

**The instigator knows that the groom shot his bride and he tells her to give him a break, trying to feign innocence. The shotgun lines imply that the groom and his accomplice used shotguns at the wedding. Meanwhile, the bride is getting closer to death.

    She didn't choose this role
But she'll play it and make it sincere
    So you cry, you cry
    (Give me a break)
But they believe it from the tears
And the teeth right down to the blood at her feet
    Boys will be boys
Hiding in estrogen and wearing aubergine dreams
    (Give me a break)

**The girl starts to break down and cry, faking everything to help give the groom an alibi. Everyone else believes her crying and tries to comfort her, leaving the groom to again ask if she can "give [him] a break."

    Have some composure
    And where is your posture?
    Oh, no, no
    You're pulling the trigger
    Pulling the trigger
    All wrong
    Have some composure
    And where is your posture?
    Oh, no, no
    You're pulling the trigger
    Pulling the trigger
    All wrong

**The groom remembers everything he said to his accomplice again, but he also thinks that the girl is starting something she never intended to start.

Come on this is screaming photo op, op
    Come on
    Come on
    This is screaming
    This is screaming
    This is screaming photo op.
    Boys will be boys, baby
    Boys will be boys
    Boys will be boys, baby
    Boys will be boys

**The groom is having too much fun to admit that he did something wrong. He asks the wedding photographer to take a picture (this is screaming photo op). When asked in private by his accomplice, he simply says that "boys will be boys", telling him that they were just having fun.

Give me envy, give me malice, give me your attention
Give me envy, give me malice, baby, give me a break
When I say shotgun, you say wedding
    Shotgun, wedding, shotgun, wedding
    Boys will be boys
Hiding in estrogen and boys will be boys
    Boys will be boys
Hiding in estrogen and wearing aubergine dreams

**The instigator is still angry at the groom. She asks him about it too and he basically replies that boys are going to have fun whenever they can. Everyone else is laughing and dancing, while the bride might as well be dead as the song ends.

    Yep. It's me again.

Okay, we all know this is a summary of Invisible Monsters, but I'm just going to post the double meaning of the song, which is a literal shotgun wedding.

    Time To Dance

Well, she’s not bleeding on the ballroom floor
    Just for the attention.
    Cause that’s just ridiculous...ly odd
But she sure is going to get it
    Here’s the setting
    Fashion magazines line the walls
The walls line the bullet holes
(Well she isn't bleeding all over the ballroom floor for the attention of it, because that's plain wierd. She sure is going to have some responsibility on her hands with that kid, in her home in her room with the pictures posted on the walls and the bulletholes from the shotgun.)

    Have some composure
    Where is your posture?
    Oh no no!
    You're pulling the trigger
    Pulling the trigger all wrong
(Hold yourself together and stand up straight and proud. You're getting married. And you're shooting that gun all wrong [reffering to the father].)

    Give me envy
    Give me malice
    Give me your attention
    Give me envy
    Give me malice
    Baby give me a break!
(Self-explanitory: give me evny, malice, and your attention.)

When I say "Shotgun," you say "Wedding"
    Shotgun, wedding
    Shotgun, wedding
    (Again, self-explainitory: shotgun wedding.)

Well she didn’t choose this role
But she’ll play it and make it sincere
    So you cry, you cry
    (Give me a break!)
But they believe it from the tears
And the teeth right down to the blood
    At her feet
    Boys will be boys
Hiding in estrogen and wearing Aubergine dreams
(Give me a break break break!)
(She didn't mean to get pregnant, but she'll make it look all fine and dandy. She's crying out of sadness, but the people buy it as tears of happiness, along with the fake smiling. She's actually having the child, or she's having a miscarrige [either her water broke, or she's on her period again, indicating a miscarrige.])

Come on, this is screaming photo op
    Come on
    Come on
    This is screaming
    This is screaming
    This is screaming photo op
(Come on, photographers. It's your time. What a great photo op [opportunity].)

    Boys will be boys baby,
    Boys will be boys
    Boys will be boys baby
    Boys will be boys
    (Self-explanitory: Boys will be boys.)

    Boys will be boys
Hiding in estrogen and boys will be boys
    Boys will be boys
Hiding in estrogen and wearing Aubergine dreams
(Boys will be boys, lurking around girls trying to get them to have sex with them. [Then the Aubergine dreams comes in, which doesn't relate to this interpertation.])

    I hope that made sense...

To be fair i think this book has ryan ross written all over it, its myspterious and qwerky all the way through it.

Someone also said that '' pulling the trigger all wrong'' means they are doing it all wrong.. this is the only one i belive is right... because the killing was a hoax anyways.. so they need to mame it believeable..

Well heres my interpretation. I could be wrong but whatever..

first of all, this book is definitely based on invisible monsters.

Well, she's not bleeding on the ballroom floor
    Just for the attention.
Cause that's just ridiculously on. (It would be ridiculous if brandy was really bleeding on the ballroom floor just for attention like evie probably assums)

Well, she sure is gonna get it (referring to what Evie thought she was giving to Shannon)

    Here's the setting
Fashion magazines line the walls now
The walls line the bullet holes (What used to be the glamourous life of modeling for Shannon, Evie, and brandy is now simply turning into a gun game of bullet holes)

    Have some composure
    Where is your posture?
Oh, no, no (what evie thinks of brandy dying, she thinks brandy still needs to be modeling. Drop Dead Gorgeous you could say.)

    You're pulling the trigger
    Pulling the trigger
All wrong (refering to how a. evie isn't shooting who she thought she was and b. This isn't the way to deal with things)

Give me envy, give me malice, give me a-a-attention
Give me envy, give me malice, baby, give me a break! (Whats going through shannons mind as if she's the photagrapher and brandy and evie are her models)

When I say "Shotgun", you say "Wedding"
"Shotgun", "Wedding", "Shotgun", "Wedding" (refering to how evie really doesn't want to get married, she's only doing it for attention and to be center spotlight)

    She didn't choose this role
But she'll play it and make it sincere
So you cry, you cry (referring to how Shannon didn't choose to shoot her jaw off, but she had to in order to maintain a normal life)
    (Give me a break)
But they believe it from the tears
And the teeth right down to the blood
At her feet (evies thinking give me a break, and she believes shannon only did it for attention)
    Boys will be boys
Hiding in estrogen and wearing Aubergine dreams
(Give me a break) ( referring to how brandy is really just a boy hiding in estrogens and wearing his fave makeup, aubergine dreams, evies thinking again give me break )

    Have some composure
    Where is your posture?
    Oh, no, no
    You're pulling the trigger
    Pulling the trigger
    All wrong ( read above)

Come on this is screaming "Photo op." op...
    Come on
    Come on
    This is screaming
    This is screaming
This is screaming "Photo op." (reffering to how to each of them this is probably just a dramatic scene for a photo op)

    Boys will be boys, baby
    Boys will be boys
    Boys will be boys, baby
Boys will be boys ( brandys gonna keep being a girl even though he's just hiding in estrogens)

Give me envy, give me malice, give me a-a-attention
Give me envy, give me malice, baby, give me a break!
When I say "Shotgun", you say "Wedding"
"Shotgun", "Wedding", "Shotgun", "Wedding" (read above)

    Boys will be boys
Hiding in estrogen and boys will be boys
    Boys will be boys
Hiding in estrogen and wearing Aubergine dreams (read what I had above)

I think its about a wedding they didnt really want but had to by force.( shotgun wedding ) meaning a wedding forced by someone because she is pregnate or something in that area.
Next clue is "oh shes not bleeding on the ballroom floor just for the attention, cuz that would be rediculouse. "
My interpetation is that she isn't just marrying him for fame and attention. or that she is marrying him for fame. Not sure yet.

K, this is based on the book invisible monsters. So heres how it goes.

    CHARACTER INFO
brandy is shannons brother who was gay and they thought he died. The ria sisters found him and shane (brandy) wanted to make the biggest mistake he possibly could.

shannon is shanes/brandys sister. Shannon is a model who had a great life. She wanted to start over with an average life so she shot her jaw off. She later finds brandy in the hospital after she gets some kind of sex change surgery. They end up staying with each other and traveling everywhere.

evie is shannons friend. evie was a man until he was 16. His name was evan. evie has a big mansion shannon burned down. at the end of evies wedding, herhair and dress are burned off along with the big manor house her wedding is in.

manus is shannons boyfriend. He ad sex with evie so her thinks evie shot shannon so she wouldnt find out. He joins brandy and shannon on traveling to frin brandys sister.

    INTERPERTATION
"well, she's not bleeding on the ballroom floor just for the attention" means brandy. at evies wedding, evie shot brandy thinking she was shannon. The house was aflame and shannon ws writing on the walls with brandys blodd to tell her she was her sister.

"you sure, you sure you let her have it" means did eie really give it to the right person.

"have some composure, where is your posture oh, no no. your pulling the trigger, pulling the trigger all wrong" is the same thing as "you sure, you sure you let her have it". did evie really shot the right person.

"Give me envy Give me malice Give me attention Give me envy Give me malice Give me a break!" are photoshoot words going through shannons head. Its her thoughts the way the photogropher would say it.

"When I say "Shotgun," you say "Wedding" Shotgun wedding
Shotgun wedding" means evie shoting brandy with a shotgun.

"Well she didn’t choose this role But she’ll play it and make it sincere So you cry, you cry" means brandy. She didn't choose being shot but she was. or maybe her sex change. but I think its being shot.

"But they believe it from the tears And the teeth right down to the blood At her feet" is evie being burned up and crying on the stairs. Its not real. just posing.

"Boys will be boys Hiding in estrogens and wearing Aubergine dreams" my favorite part. This is shane. aubergine dreams is an eyeliner or something like that. at the end after shane almost bleeds to death. Shane is in the hospital and the ria sisters come and cover him with make up and shane is gone. Its just brandy. or it might be shanes life.

"Come on, this is screaming photo op
    (It's time to dance)
Come on, this is screaming photo op
    (It's time to dance)
Come on Come on This is screaming This is screaming This is screaming photo op" means the wedding is bound to have news teams and photographers coming.

well, if you think I'm wrong, tell me.

    It's definitely based on 'Invisible Monsters' - but I was wondering;
In the 'original' lyrics that are printed in the album, at the end it says "When I say shotgun you say wedding. Or whatever comes to mind."
Could 'whatever comes to mind' be a reference to Palahniuk's book 'Closer'? It repeats the sentence '-insertword- isn't the right word, but its the first word that comes it mind' throughout the book. Panic's lyricist has made it pretty clear he's a fan of Palahnuik, so it could be phesable? Closer was published when the album was made.

It's basically about 'invisible monsters', Brandy Alexander was dying on the ballroom of Evie's wedding, Evie shot Brandy so she's bleeding on the ballroom floor...shotgun wedding...cause it involves a shotgun at Evie's wedding..the give me malice part because Shannon was a model and that's wat the photographer tells her to do! and the boys will be boys hiding in estrogen and wearing aubergine dreams..cause Brandy was a transexual who was actually Shannon's brother

Everyone who says the song is about the book "Invisable Monsters" is absolutely right.

I have no doubt in my mind, because (I know this may sound weird, but I do a lot of research)
Ryan Ross's girlfriend at the time the song was written, Jac Vanek, has Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahniuk as one of her favourite books. This leads me to believe that she along with Ryan have read the book,
Which is why I'm sure that is what the song is based on,
Along, of course, with all the reasons that have already been given.
