Overthinking Lyrics

i was thinking, overthinking
cause theres just too many scenerios
to analyze, look in my eyes
cause you're my dream please come true.
i was thinking, overthinking
about exactly how i'm not exactly him
i'll break my heart in two more times...

This song is about a breakup- something so terrible that the songwriter, Matthew Thiessen, is apparently wallowed up in pain and is thinking profusely about the events that just happened. What makes this breakup so particularly painful is that he had all these wonderful times with the girl... so wonderful, that in fact began thinking about more serious things like marriage... and in the end, they kept drawing farther and farther apart- either that, or she began rejecting him.

    Lyric pullouts:

    1. "cause theres just too many scenerios
to analyze, look in my eyes
cause you're my dream please come true..."

    1. too many good times they had together that makes the breakup so unbelievable and surreal

    2. "I was thinking, overthinking
About exactly how I'm not exactly him
I'll break my heart in two more times than you could ever do..."
2.He's saying, 'I'm not that guy of your dreams...thus, you broke my heart, and it's probably more painful for me than it could ever be for you'

    3. "cause i think way too much on a one track mind
and you're so out of touch cause i'm so far behind
i can't deny this anymore, the facts ignored all done before
and if theres one in this world, you let me know you're not that girl."
    3. He's trying so hard to catch up with her on that 'track', but it was so difficult that they had to end everything. 'The facts ignored all done before', which means the times they had together- the painful facts of their relationship, also including passionate times, like hugging and kissing...things they're trying to ignore they ever did after the breakup.
'And if there's one in this world' refers to "THE ONE" everyone is waiting for in life...and in Matt Thiessen's case, she's not the one.

    4. "they let me think a thought a thought a thought that i would know was not
of seeing my dreams come true
    i was thinking, overthinking
about how far i had let this go
one more guy/girl cliche i know now you're just in the way"
    4. 'They let me think a thought' refers to the thought of something more serious than what they already had, perhaps marriage. Those thoughts/dreams were crushed due to the breakup. He had let the relationship go too far, so he regrets that it all ended up to the breaking apart. The cliche he mentions is the actual breakup- it happens all the time, he assures himself.

    5. "cause after all the sparks you're left alone in the dark
cause after all the sparks you're left alone in the dark
and while i'm able, i think i'll label
experience with you as a mistake
and while i'm at it, i'll say i've had it"
    5. The sparks are all the good times they had- which ended to nothing. He refers to experience with her as a mistake, something he shouldn't have involved himself in.

    6. "i'm trying to make sense out of all of this
while you're fading scent just slips through my grip"
    6. He's losing her- all too quickly, and as much as he doesn't want to believe it, it's all really happening.

I have to say, this song really spoke to me. I am a Christian, but I think this song is geared toward human relationships here (though it can be interpreted the other way, and isn't that the beauty of music? It speaks the heart's language, interpreted to whatever it's going through, speaking simply and honestly).

Overthinking is my worst flaw, especially when it comes to relationships. I give myself every excuse as to why it wouldn't work out, and why I shouldn't even try. Thus *and while i'm able, i think i'll label experience with you as a mistake. And while i'm at it, i'll say i've had it experience with you is a mistake*

*Too many scenarios to analyze* which are often formulated through my illogical argument, part of my defensive wall I've thrown up. It's overwhelming when you live it out in your mind instead of taking the plunge and seeing how it'll go.

If you plow through all the possibilities you miss out, you miss that priceless opportunity, wasting time that could be spent doing, almost waiting for someone to tell you what to do. *and you're so out of touch cause i'm so far behind i'm trying to make sense out of all of this while your fading scent just slips through my grip*

*I'll break my heart in two more times than you could ever do* Overthinking breaks your heart, needlessly. Over. and over. and over again. Because you go through stages with overthinking. Thinking that it'll work, maybe... maybe if I do this then maybe this will happen and he or she will understand, will notice. But then maybe it won't work, I need time to think. Then this will definitely never work, why bother trying? But you can't let go.

*you let me know you're not that girl* You want that person to end it and tell you that it won't work out so your hope doesn't go through this overthinking. That it'll end. That all you need to work through is getting over it.

There's a point where thinking doesn't help any more. There's a point where you need to take action. I told my best friend I liked him. It worked out for me :) No, we are not together any more, but I'll say this, if I had never finally taken the leap, then I would never know. We *touched the positive with the negative end* and lit sparks by taking the plunge and DOING something about our feelings. Don't be scared to say what you feel. Don't concentrate on the feeling, the consequences. Think about what could be, what you could start. Go now. In all seriousness.

The christlike behavior may be in the relationship and not in the person...
I.E. It may still have a christian message, but still hold the traditional girl message as well. Striving for the relationship in both situations. (possibly a shakespearean type of writing)

For the most part I think "DaGitt" is right on, and though I am a Christian I disagree with "kaliko2005". Though the group is comprised of Christians, it is not neccesary, and in this case they do not, always sing about Christ. This song is the retrospective analysis of a past relationship. Though not about Christ himself, this is through the lense of a follower of Christ. One very key point I would add to DaGitt's analysis is the line "Don't Touch the positive, with the negative end, because after all of the sparks you're left alone in the dark". This line implies to me that the relationship was one between a strong Christian (as through his artwork, I would assume Matt Theisen is) and either a non-Christian, or a less strong Christian, hence the "positive" and "negative" ends. Sure there may be sparks and they may really connect, but after all of the sparks the battery will short out, and like the relationship, you will be "left alone in the dark" God Bless

This song isn't that easy to understand. If you are a Christian and believe that Jesus died for your sins and you have died to yourself and are living your life for Christ then this song is about Jesus. As Christians, we strive to be more like him. To a non-Christian this song is about a girl. Yes, Matt does state in the song that he is speaking to a girl but I feel that he is just using that to lyrically regulate his music so that he can market it towards both Christians and non-Christians.
