We Found Love Lyrics
Yellow diamonds in the light
And we're standing side by side
As your shadow crosses mine
What it takes to come alive
It's the way I’m feeling I just can't deny
But I've gotta let it go
We found love in a hopeless place

They've fallen in love with each other, but they are bad influences on one another. they found love but its hopeless.. 'in a hopeless place' the video shows, like any relationship its starts off well, then slowly starts to fall apart, like any other relationship. The beginning shows rihanna missing him, when she says 'its like you want the bad times back so you can have the good', however the end of the video shows her making a stand, moving on and getting back on track. truly insperational.

This song to me, means that obviously they are in love but aren't good for each other. "love and life I will divide" meaning she knows she loves him, but she has to do what is right for her life. She has to decide between the two. "Turn away because I need you more" is saying she feels she "needs" love more than life, but she turns away from love because she knows life is the correct choice. "feel the heartbeat in my mind" means she is no longer thinking with her heart and how she feels, but she is thinking with her mind and doing what is best for her. Hopeless place can be many things, but for whatever reason, they were doomed from the beginning, never going to end up together, and she has to let her feelings go and think about what's best for her.

So the song starts out by showing how good he makes her feel. When she says yellow diamonds in the light it illustrates happiness. She sees it. Ahe feels alive only when Shes next to him.shE can't deny this amazing feeling but she has to let it go because they found love at the wrong place.
There's no hope. Then she says to shine a light through an open door love and life I will divide. I take this to mean as even when you think there's a possibility. There isn't. Apparently love can't be integrated into her life for whatever reason. And she has to turn away from the light the other person shows because she needs him more. If ahe doesn't, shell give in and already her heart is interfering with her reason. This is shown when she says feel the heartbeat in my mind. And again. Even though this is how she feels she is making the decision to let it go.

I think the meaning of the song is that she's fallen for someone who cannot commit to a relationship other then sexual. She knows she cannot have his heart yet he has captures her's so easily. It's kills her that she can't do this and goes through all the terrible things just to be with him even if its only physical. In ways the song reminds me of Ana and Christian from the Fifty Shades Of Gray series and how their relationship is. And like Ana, Rihanna decides that she can never have what she really wants and she needs to move on with her life without him no matter what.
I understand what you are saying - and it very well maybe the primary interpretation of the song - I don't know the writer - does anyone know anything about him, like his personal life. I certainly see that a narrator could be talking about exactly what you say - but consider for a moment:
'Yellow diamonds in the light'. Yellow diamonds are among the most rare of diamonds - the most precious of stones, an extremely strong and beautiful material. Yellow is also a color of powerful symbolism: Yellow shines with optimism, enlightenment, and happiness. Shades of golden yellow carry the promise of a positive future. Yellow will advance from surrounding colors and instill optimism and energy, as well as spark creative thoughts.
Could not the line 'we found in a hopeless place' also mean that they actually did find love in a hopeless place - in awful time of their life? The narrator could be telling their story about how at one time they found themselves in a hopeless place, maybe in extreme poverty or in war or in drug addiction and out of that they did find love.
Couldn't the 'The shadowing crossing each other' and their 'dark sides' speak to the pain that they still, and maybe always will battle from the hopeless time in their lives? When the narrator speaks of dividing 'love and life' could it not be he is speaking of a way to deal with this battle. That they need to hold onto the love which allows them to live a better life and leave behind the life they still battle through flashbacks - sort of like post traumatic stress. That maybe their love is the shining a light 'through an open door.'
It just seems to me that two view points can be taken - and maybe that is the author's intention. One view point is that they did find love in a hopeless place that can lead them out of that hopeless place. The other is that the love they found in that hopeless place is as toxic as the place they found it and so needs to shed. So, I'm not disagreeing with anyone, I'm just saying that both can exist - and it depends on your point of view. Since I knew nothing about the singer's life and my life is different I saw something different.

The song opens with what is an ambiguous metaphor: 'Yellow diamonds in the light'. This may be one of two things (or even both) - 1) the relationship, which the narrator thought was perfectm is in fact impure and 'yellow' when they take a step back and look at it 'in the light'. 2) 'Yellow diamonds' is a street name for crack cocaine, which may hint at a much darker problem within the relationship.
The repetition of the line 'we found in a hopeless place' seems to show the narrator trying to convince themselves that because she and her partner started their relationship when they were both - physically, emotionally or otherwise - feeling hopeless, that the intial positivity that they got from one another is enough to justify their staying in such a distructive relationship. The narrator is trying to convince themselves, rather than someone else.
The shadowing crossing each other may be a way of saying that there relationship is self-destructive after a time - their own 'dark sides' will cross, producing more intense darkness and further destruction. When the narrator speaks of dividing 'love and life' it seems that they have came to this realisation and know that in order to have a 'life', they must disconnect themselves from the self-destructive 'love' that they cling to. By shining a light 'through an open door', it appears that the narrator has discovered and accepted that the only way to escape the destructive relationship that they are in, no matter how painful emotionally, is to leave.
I'm not talking about the singer or about the video writer's interpretation of the song. I'm talking about the person who wrote the lyrics in the first place. That person is not the same as the person who song it or the person who wrote the video. I am curious of what they were thinking, what it is about for them. It doesn't seem to me to be nearly as dark as it has been interpreted. I could be wrong but I don't think it is obvious unless you assume its all about the singer and what you see in the video.

Its all about taking ecstasy. They fall in love while there high and when there not they fall apart. Watch the video, its pretty obvious.
I find all of this fascinating. I knew nothing about the singer or her life or that of the writer (and producer) of the song Calvin Harris. But like anything I take from it my own meaning. It didn't talk to me about a bad relationship as much as a passionate one - one of yellow: happiness and joy, that through all the great light of the world it still shinned bright. The the pains and despair (our shadows) we each feel over powers us and yet we fight to come alive in this love. That we were both in bad places - hopeless places - and we fought to come alive. That all the pain and doubt over love, yellow: cowardice and deceit, have to let go of to love. That we have to go through an open door, leave that old life behind, choose love, choose the person we need more then the past full of pain. That we need to take the feeling in our heart and think it through - make sense of it - embrace love not run from it.
It began for me with the narration at the start: you are so hurt, you're screaming and no one can hear you. You find this person that means so much to you and you're ashamed - because you've always had to be strong and with this new person you are weak, you can't resist and you've made them so much a part of your work that you feel like nothing without them, because you now share one heart. In your life you feel helpless and weak like no one gets you, like you've lost all hope and no one can save you. And in this world of pain you found love anyway - some one who maybe gave you hope and happiness and joy and in your fight to leave behind the pain of the world in which you found them you lost them - and now you look at the world and figure you'd take the bad back just to have that good - that person whom you love, your yellow diamond, rare and beautiful, confusing and bright, and full of happiness and joy.
Ok so I'm way off from the interpretations on this site. I was surprised to read them, and they all focus on Rihanna as if she wrote it about herself when in fact she did not write it at all. That does not mean the interpretations are wrong. I don't really know - but I like my interpretation - that out of hopelessness we can find hope, we can find love, and we can leave the one world behind for the other, that somehow we can hold onto the part of that awful world that was good without having to take back all that bad stuff with it.
Faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

This song connects to me bc it's exactly how I feel about my ex. No one said we should be together or that it would work but it did somehow (for a while). We were such opposites of each other that we could go from loving to hating each other in a second. We put each other through hell bc I don't think either of us was prepared for that kind of love. It's like a drug: you know it's no good for you and you'll feel like shit later, but it feels SO good when you're high that you don't care and youd do anything to feel it again. I still care about him and I prob always will LA

It's all about cheese.
Rihanna saw some tasty looking cheese in an ugly supermarket (the supermarket being the hopless place). She loves this cheese so, so much but you see, it's just gone out of date; But she just loves this cheese so she wants to keep it. But she knows she shouldn't because it reeks so bad.

They have found love in a hopeless place and love is being a drug even though it can be bad you want that bad to get the good.
anonymous Feb 6th, 2012 2:03pm report
I'd go with heroin, c'mon, yellow diamonds? Heartbeat on my mind... Sounds like they're really getting high... That should explain, why it is a hopeless place and why they're aren't good for each other.

"yellow diamonds in the light and we're standing side by side as your shadow crosses mine"... i think as well as the meaning of their love etc. she was refering to the two cranes in belfast that built the titanic that she shows in her video, as they are both yellow, stand beside each other and their shadows cross each other.

In this song she is saying that her and chris brown found love in a hopless place meaning that they love each other but the love was no good they started off good but it soon turned out to be bad she is saying that the love they have for each other want work out but they have found love in a hopless place...

My interpretation....We Found Love is an amazing story I myself have been through. The point is that they love each other, they really do, but their love is bad for them. It's hard for Rihanna to say goodbye because of this. The drugs, the alchohol, the sex was all just a part of them. It seems to me the guy began to get a little abusive and tried to force her to have sex and take drugs, just my thoughts.

Yellow diamonds in the light- how much attention they bring to a judgemental world."and were standing side by side" Everyone knows they are no good for eachother but they have a temporary unconditional love for one another that shines. Hence what it takes to come alive she has an undeniable feeling that she can't control. But its something she has to be free of. basically she has to choose between love and life.
anonymous Jan 15th, 2012 1:25pm report
There are many ways to interrupt this song. In my opinion, due to the actual lack of lyrics to the song, I believe that she didn't fall in love with a man, but more drugs. Obviously a global act such a Rihanna can't have drugs associated with her name so they used love for a man as a scapegoat. E.g. ''Turn away cause I need you more
Feel the heartbeat in my mind'' Drugs are addictive, and can cause withdrawal symptoms such as throbbing headaches.
Another e.g. ''What it takes to come alive'' caffeine brings you ''alive'' or even cocaine.
Obviously this is my opinion. Its is interesting, very strange lyrics and a stranger video.

Their hopeless place is 'drugs & alcohol' their relationship was built on all the bad stuff, that they got carried away and finally enough was enough. In the music video it shows the pills, blunts, and ect. Eventually they hit rock bottom.

Okay here goes nothing. Dudley(the boy) symbolizes a drug in the beginning everything is good the effects of him make her happy. After that, they fall in love and when you love someone so much its almost as if youre addicted to the peraon. Once again he symbolizes a drug and once you take drugs you cant get enough of it and she's showing he addictive he is. The building falls down shows their love coming to an end. She comes out the car but comes back because he is the drug(very addicting) she realizes that she cant keep him and make the desicion to leave him. Hope i helped :)

Doesn't anyone notice their drug abuse? Obviously addiction is the hopeless place she so speaks of.
