Well to begin with "Kickin' as I'm tryin' to sleep
I got the mud beneath my shoes" is a direct reference to withdrawal, remember John Lennon Cold Turkey "My eyes are wide open Can't get to sleep...36 hours rolling in pain" please I've been there many times with the mud under my shoes. Now lets look at "get away, gotta get away. And I think too much" all he, or any user, wants is to be free of it all and the thought of it just consumes him day and night.
Now he's a little confused because this white dealer(the crackerman) has "taken a walk on the wild side" Lou Reed ??? Get the picture, so he is trippin over this transvestite who's hooking him up and he is not sure weather to go for it or not. It is not uncommon to run into this scene in the rock world. Seems to me all he wanted to do was get free from this underground life so like any artist he could put his pain in words.
