This is a song about working a sales job. The main riff in the song is reminiscent of the sound of a doorbell, he may have been a door to door salesman.

"Avalanche or roadblock
I was a snowball in hell
Avalanche or roadblock
A jailer trapped in his cell"

Snowball in hell: he didn't have a chance. Jailer in his cell: He did it to himself.

"Money's all broke, and food's going hungry
If it wasn't for disappointment
I wouldn't have any appointments"

He's unsuccessful, no appointments and is going broke.
