My guess on this one (because its only My interpretation) Maynard is talking to his other self The voice in his head is talking to him knowing him better then he knows himself he can't get rid of this voice But he also feels he should be one person so he lets his other self die a little

Unpolished thoughts of Pushit,Schism, and Jambi in my opinion. All about two sides but not quite at the Jambi stage I wrote about Opiate below because Part of Me is one of the first mentions or IS the first mention of balance within. balance is mentioned and comes to light throughout the years. Tool builds on the concept and refines it in Jambi but, I like to think all started back in Opiate. 9:) Opiate I think was just an establishment of anger and pain for and from religion and you could say it opened eyes to angst riddled teens and really opened the flood gates to Undertow which turned the pain and anger into potential and from potential to plan (aenima) plan to change (lateralus) change to decision (10k)and one of there building concepts being balance within.

Everyone before they get a hang of a certain writing style writes about love. The Opiate EP was an early album for Tool, and was before (I'm sure) he advanced himself into creating the complex metaphoric style he used for the latter records. He's just angry at a girl, unsure if he hates her or he needs her/ I'm the only one for you crap people feel.

I'm actually glad that no one has figured out the "Deeper" meaning to this beautiful and powerful song because I had just recently cracked it's "hidden" message. The song is about the struggle between a man or the male subject and his libido (sex urge). 'I know you well, you are a part of me' is a simple statement but when you take it literally and not in the direction of his psyche or his consciousness everything becomes aparent. 'give it up' this is where I realized the genius to this song because both sides of the struggle are saying the same thing and you can tell throughout, also all of these statements can be directed at either subject. They are universal. 'you're just here for me to use', all too evident. This is a hint at the duality of a man's life that ties in with our genes. Our genes are selfish and they basically use us as a tool to reproduce. Infact that is where the libido comes from and is also the reason why we are all here today as a species. The sex drive is something that is commonly overlooked but not by tool:) 'I know you well, you are a part of me,'I know you better than I know myself'. A bit of humor, I bet he know's himself REALLY good ( if you follow ). Autofalacio is one way a person can truely "know" themself masterbation another. digressing here...... "You don't speak. You don't judge. You can't leave. You can't hurt me. You're just here for me to use." getting clearer? a penis can't speak or judge or leave or hurt you, unless you let it... just as well a man can't seem to communicate with his penis (see spontaneous erection) nor would he hurt leave or judge. "It's time for you to make a sacrifice. It's time to die a little. Give it up." climatic and dramatic as well as a promised conclusion. who will break?who will win? "A part of me." this is the line that completes the song, as it is the song title you can bet that it has significance. It is the answer or the conclusion with the libido winning 1-0. you should note that he didn't say "just a part of me" because he has unified and acknowledged his libido and accepted the outcome. So it may even be that he was suggesting the significance of our genes and the power of evolution. thanks for reading. -&e
