You're Somebody Else Lyrics

I saw the part of you
That only when you're older you will see too
You will see too
I held the better cards
But every stroke of luck has got a bleed through
It's got a bleed through
You held the balance of the time
That only blindly I...

I believe its about a friend watching someone go through depression, putting a fake face on and then seeing the real side when theyre alone. "Well you talk like yourself, No, I hear someone else though, now youre making me nervous" - I think this means a friend see the pain and just doent know how to help

When I hear this song it brings me to tears, because the words make me think of my brother who just passed away a week from drug addiction and depression. He committed suicide, and when I hear the chorus
    "Well you look like yourself
    But you're somebody else
Only it ain't on the surface
    Well you talk like yourself
No, I hear someone else though
    Now you're making me nervous"
he sounded like himself he looked like him but he wasn't.

As someone who is currently watching their soulmate, best friend, number 1 supporter (all one person) going through depression, I truly believe in this song, a friend is witnessing a friend go through a hard time in life. My boyfriend talks like himself, but I know he isn’t fully there anymore. He used to burn bright with flame, now he’s colder than ice. He looks like himself, but he’s just somebody else. I don’t know how to help him, I know everyday he’s getting more tired of being alive.

This made My stomach wring and my heart twist when I finally realized what this song meant. It hit me like a train wreck. Looking back it's like me talking to my younger self telling them I've seen parts of you you'll only see when you grow up and her telling me that we look the same but are different people now. Others telling me that life had changed me. Me telling myself that I was different from how I used to be. It made tears run down my face as if I was watching someone kill my younger self.

    From the artists themselves:

According to Cole and Shpresa, the main lyric in the song, you look like yourself but you're somebody else was "more a matter of one speaking to oneself than to another person." They went on to say, "sometimes when we’re dealing with psychological issues, we literally feel displaced internally; alien to ourselves. [The song] ended up taking on multiple meanings and perspectives but the root of it at the beginning was as a sort of self-talk, self-therapy."

    It’s internal struggle.

So I always interpreted this as somebody watching somebody going through depression or a “looking at yourself” go through it kind of thing. However, since listen to this song whilst rocking my daughter to sleep I got a sudden flash of her grown up and living her life - getting married, uni, having her own kids. It’s the opening line “I saw a part of you, that only when you’re older you will see to” and even later in the song some of the lines could be interpreted as hearing and seeing somebody as your little baby but actually they are now all grown up. Just a thought I had whilst getting the little one off to sleep!

I think it's about a break up. He loved his gf but someday he saw in her face and in her voice that there was something wrong. Not her looks, but he feld somehow she wasn't the same anymore, but she felt like a stranger suddenly so it made him nervous and then I suppose she left him and then he was left alone and broken.
In fact, that's the way I see it.
Either way, this song is gives me chills! It's a beautifull song and their voice, the way they sing it, it goes right to the heart!!

I immediately thought of drug addiction with this song, specifically my brother who lost his life to a terrible heroin addiction. But mental illness fits too. same thing though isn't it. Addiction, depression, it all goes together

I think this song is about someone that sees their friend/family member/partner go through depression or another mental illness, slowly realizing what's happening, singing this song when they hope it's not too late.

My interpretation is about some one with a personality disorder. This song reminds me of my narcissistic ex..he treated me really badly when we were together and after the break up a few months later he started acting nicely towards me telling me good things he'd never said..thus relates with you look like your self but you're someone else .

From my view the song could possibly be the the partner saying how they feel with their partner that has undiagnosed mental health such as dissociative identity disorder. The reason for this is the lyric "well you look like yourself but you're somebody else only it ain't on the surface, well you talk like yourself no, I hear someone else" for those that don't know dissociative identity disorder is multiple personalities very much "you look like yourself but your somebody else" this is only my view though due to knowing and loving someone with that disorder, and before they were diagnosed this is the song that made me realize that they may have dissociative identity disorder.

to me is when you fall in love with your best friend and it feels like they are somebody else and makes you nervous. but you cant be together so you go back to your old selves so that version of the person is gone.

To me this song like many other people is talking about a person seeing a friend go through depression though I think they only truly see it after they commit suicide “couldn’t believe that you were gone” makes me believe they died then the song continues as if they are realizing the red flags wishing they noticed sooner.

“I saw the part of you
That only when you're older you will see too
    You will see too”

i saw the parts of you that you’ll only see when you’ve grown and matured as a person, and until then you’ll never understand.

    “I held the better cards
But every stroke of luck has got a bleed through
    It's got a bleed through”

Although i tried fixing things, sometimes some things just can’t be fixed.

“You held the balance of the time
That only blindly I could read you
    But I could read you”

you slipped and showed me who you really are, not who you claimed to be. although there were warning signs, i was blinded by love.

    “It's like you told me
    Go forward slowly
It's not a race to the end”

you eventually confessed to me that you were never really ready for this, and to further take things slow and use caution.

    “Well you look like yourself
    But you're somebody else
Only it ain't on the surface
    Well you talk like yourself
No, I hear someone else though
    Now you're making me nervous”

you look like yourself but you’re actually a different person, deep down. though you look the same on the outside, you don’t act the same as you once did and now i’m getting a little bit scared because of that.

    “You were the better part
Of every bit of beating heart that I had
    Whatever I had”

i never fully fixed the broken parts of me, so the parts you had “fixed” are now broken again.

    “I finally sat alone
    Pitch black flesh and bone
Couldn't believe that you were gone”

i took a step back to evaluate everything and realized that you are now not the same person you once claimed to be. and that this relationship was no longer what it once was.

Personally to me it seems they are talking to a cancer sufferer, keeps up the optimistic front but knows they are probably gonna die, the "making me nervous" part particularly resonates with me, you know somethings wrong

I feel like it’s a mirror. It’s like you're getting real with yourself. And someone who genuinely knows you letting you know this isn’t you. It’s getting lost but someone who loves you always being there.

This song really makes you contemplate everything.
    ..who am I? ACTUALLY

i think this song is about a person realising that the person he/she is dating is really not the one....Then the guy is no longer giving much attention to his lady

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

When I first listened to it I immediately thought of Veterans. Like every one who grew up in that Era, all their friends/brothers/sons/fathers went to war and came back someone else. And now just slowly making progress. Could be a brother bond as well. But anyway..seems like it really could be any trauma that pulled people apart
