   I think its about a guy reflecting on his life. he's ended having a relationship he never wanted. when the song says "I got your call as soon as the day hit night" is him reciving a call from someone he was once in a relationship that he wished had continued on but left because he never wanted to turn it into anything but regrets it.

   I think it's about 9/11 because in the bridge, police sirens are fire engines are in the background. "Waiting for a friend to call and say they're still alive..." The song is also placed in New York (references to West Side, cabs, etc.)

   Everything just is how it is. It is what it is. The love of his life is mentally ill. Everyday he waits for the call that she's gone. He remembers doing this before with "parallel lines" on her wrist. Then waiting to know she's alive.
   
   They've given everyone a reason to leave them and give up on them and they understand that.
   
   After the incident he thinks about how it haunts him and he never meant to become "more than a one-night stand". He thinks about how everything comes to an end and the bitterness of everyone ends up alone. It is what it is.
   
   Hey knows the pain she goes through day to day with her illness. He knows how horrible it was.
   He understands that but is just begging for a moment about him. He puts up a front but he's begging to just give him just a moment to keep.
   
   I think he says everything with the one line "I was surprised you stuck around long enough to figure out..." It's taken him through hell and back but he stuck with her and now maybe things can be all alright

   I think this guy has treated people (women) poorly and disregards their feelings in the past. Uses them for one night stands. But he regrets it now because it's almost like karma when he finally meets someone he cares about and needs she leaves. So karma comes around because of all the things he did to others this one special person doesn't stick around.

   I think that the song means, he got a call, which might be a break-up call, and this call reminds him of a similar feeling he got when a car accident happened in the past..., in general a feeling of "loosing someone"

    He was driving in in the city at dusk when he recieved a call. He could tell by the tone what it was about (a friend of his has been involved in am accident). He pulled the car over. Wishing on parallel lines is literal. Hes on a road wishing for his friend to not be dead. He wants him to call to say that he isnt dead.

    i think of "i got nothin left inside of my chest, but it's all alright" as him dying but he is ok with that because he has the feeling that everbody he loves is gonna leave him someday(die)anyway so it's ok for him to go too.(die)
