This is Gospel Lyrics

This is Gospel for the fallen ones
locked away in permanent slumber.
Assembling their philosophies from pieces of broken memories.

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
This is the beat of my heart.
This is the beat of my heart.

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh,...

This song is about those who have suffered and fulfilled their needs and wants in life, and want nothing more than to rest in peace and carry on.

The first verse already talks about this, with "the ones in permanent slumber", aka those who are dead.

"If you love me let me go" refers to the family and loved ones not wanting them to die, trying to hold on for "the fear of falling apart". The doctors in the official video have several ways restraints because they're the ones keeping the person who's near death alive - constrained and alive - as he tries to run into the light.

Even when he's dead, the character wants the family to stop grieving, let him go, and let him sleep.

As a physician, I probably have a different view of the end of life than most people.

When I first listened to this song, I liked it because it was catchy and enjoyable. After playing it a couple of times, I started to listen to the lyrics. I was dumbstruck by the elegance with which they describe a significant moral dilemma modern medicine faces.

As someone else on this page mentioned, this song is about the end of life. When patients who are trying to die are being kept alive far longer than they should by the advances of medicine. While there are plenty of times when medicine could, and should, do everything in its power to bring back someone from the brink of death; there are just as many times when the care is causing more harm than good. Where we "save" someone, only to ship them off to a skilled nursing facility to spend the rest of their lives in stasis. Brain dead patients kept alive on a ventilator placed through their neck and feeding tubes placed through the abdomen. Those who never awaken, never taste their favorite foods or perform their favorite activities again. They aren't dead, but you can not call that living.

The beginning and end of the song illustrate this the best, as does the entire video.

In the beginning, "locked away in permanent slumber" clearly describes a comatose patient that will never wake up.

Then, during the entire video, we watch a man trying to die who is continually being "rescued" by all of the physicians and treatments being administered. He keeps trying to move on to the afterlife, but they keep pulling him back. Again, this is reflected in the verse "I won't give up without a fight. If you love me, let me go." He keeps trying to pass on, and he wants his friends and family to let him die in peace.

In the end, he breaks through the ropes holding him back, escaping into a bright white light (symbolizing the term "go towards the light"). While this is occurring, the heartbeat heard throughout the entire song finally flat lines, and he dies on the table.

I believe that this song represents people suffering a terminal illness, waiting to die. Suicide. Euthanasia. The lyrics "if you love me, let me go" will me to believe that this being whom is suffering is in so much physical and or mental pain, that it is much easier to "let them go" peacefully than to watch suffer in pain for who knows how much longer. "The fear of falling apart" represents suffering and the fear of the pain of the future. The person fears to keep living and see what else will happen. They would much rather have passed away than keep living and "fall apart." "Gnashing teeth and criminal tounges conspire against the odds." I believe that this lyric means that the people watching this person suffer do not understand the extent of their pain. Their "gnashing teeth and criminal tounges" are telling them to live and be happy and be better, without knowing.

to me this song could be about depression, suicide, or from a patients perspective. like in the line, "if you love me let me go". The person would be saying this to someone trying to keep them alive when they are already dying, or want to die so badly. Like in the video, all the doctors are trying to keep him alive and hold onto his life, but all he wants to do is die and be at peace. like I said, in a suicide/depression stand point, the person could be going thru so much pain and suffering they could see no point in living, so they tell their loved ones, "if you love me let me go" and to let them go and end their everyday pain and suffering.

My interpretation is that Brendon has done something bad accidentally. He is sent for execution where the doctors will do away with him. As Brendons actions were accidental he starts singing "if you love me let me go" which is him begging for mercy to the people but they won't listen. He tries to escape multiple times to get someone to care. He is unsuccessful. Brendon was gone and people got him ready for his funeral. During that, Brendon sings " never do goods and insufferable b*****ds " this is him naming the people who didn't listen for something he didn't mean. He was placed in a coffin. As the crime was accidental, mercy comes and Brendon is brought back from the dead. Once again he tries to escape but gets grabbed with ropes.

That it about how someone either in love with someone else while he is in a relationship or is loved by a obsessed person who he doesn't like. This evident " truth be told I never was yours ". And in how the music video he trying to run away add to my ideas.

i think the song is about someone in a coma(like brendan was in the offical music video) who just wants to 'let go' per say, the song states "if you love me let me go" meaning if you love that person, let them 'go' (pull the plug) and let them go into the light, like they finally do to brendan at the end of the video (hoped this helped:))

i think that this song means that the ones who have held down (like Brendan was in the music video) should just tell their parents (or guardian) to let them go, cause their words hurt like if they told their parents they like the same gender (not using that word, it could be taken as an insult) and they means that their lives were never their parents to live, and if their parents hate them, they would rather have that then be afarid of falling apart, as stated in the song ("the fear of falling apart") then at the end of the music vid, brendan was let go, meaning eaither that persons parents could have accepted them or have disownd them(lol sorry for writing a book, i had a break through with this song)

So, thanks to a "Behind the Lyrics" on Spotify, this song is actually about Spencer's drug addiction and suicidal thoughts. The chorus is from Spencer's perspective, while most of the rest of it is from Brendon's, not being able to help one of his closest friends. This is the main reason as to why Spencer left the band.

    *DISCLAIMER*

Yes, Spencer is still alive and well now. He went to rehab, ad he's okay! :)

This song is about a relationship that two lovers are holding onto too tight and Brendon Urie is warning the listeners about falling into a relationship like this. The "fallen ones" are people who are hung up on a relationship, so they're "locked away in permanent slumber". The break up was so bad that they're "assembling their philosophies from pieces of broken memories". In the chorus, Urie starts his personal warning. He's telling the story of a relationship that he and his partner were trying to make work but it just never does. They're scared of "falling apart" and he tells her that he never loved her in the first place. ("Truth be told I never was yours") In the second verse, Urie talks about how the "vagabonds", "ne'r do wells", and "insufferable bastards" feel guilty from past relationships when it was really their ex-partner's fault it didn't work. Their partners were pretending to be someone they're not. ("Confessing their apostasies led away by imperfect imposters") "Don't try to sleep to the end of the world and bury me alive" pertains to Urie telling the people who he referenced throughout the song to put themselves out there again and that life isn't worth missing out on extraordinary relationships and that they shouldn't "give up without a fight".

In the current issue of Alt Press, Brendon said the song is about Spencer's battle with drugs. To quote him, "I was... angry at Spence when I wrote the song... It's like, "Why won't you let me help you? Why won't you let anyone in? All I want is to make a difference for you so we can rise above this."

By the way there are many people on Earth - the person you like isn`t the only one you will like, so don`t just give up - go on and make your life better - nobody will

    Correct, Billions of people!
So many to choose and like!
Godspeed on your exploration and desire the one you like will like you!

As you said, nobody Will. Ciao!

My opinion is that this song tells the people that are struggling badly to find themselves a lover not to be posessed to be with them. That means that if the person does`nt want to be a partner with the other person, dont try harder to persuade them that you both could be happy and stuff. The better way is to find someone else, no matter how awesome that person that denyed on you is. Keep living because no matter what, there always is a reason.

Ok.I feel that this is gospel interprates to how society judges people and how the fear and anxiety holds people down from being who they truly want to be. Or besides society, this could very well be the church hence "Gospel." He could be saying this is basically how the church is nowadays. This theory partains to the lyrics excellently, but more so the video. "This is gospel, for the fallen ones locked away in permanent slumber" This may possibly partain to the ignorant people who have fallen into the "trances" of the church. Assembling their philosiphies from pieces of broken memories. This could mean that the church came up with rules so that they would not be hurt. Duh duh duh basically all this means is the church is really derogatory and hateful towards people who decide differently than their rules... thx

The first lyric, "this is gospel for the fallen ones" could mean that all of the fallen people will agree with this. "Locked away in permanent slumber Assembling their philosophies
    From pieces of broken memories"
Can mean that the people who have passed want the people in the present to know this. You can hear people in the back singing "this is the beat of my heart" can assemble the meaning of the song, the fallen people are saying they wanted to pass on their own terms and they didn't need all of the medicine and hospital treatment they were given. "If you love me let me go" is the overall message, if you really loved your relatives or however the passed people were realated to you then you should have let them go. You shouldn't have tried to save them with tons of medicine and surgery. "Cause these word are knives that often leave scars" could mean that simple words can leave scars forever, when you tell the doctor to proceed with the surgery it can leave scars forever. The passes people with forever have a scar from surgery or attemped saving that they won't want. The overall message in my opinion is if you love your loved ones the you should have let them pass peacefully without trying everything (like meds and surgery) to save them which really induced a slow painful death for them.

Disclaimer: I am young so I replaced the swear word for a word I say when listening to this song. No interpretations are incorrect :)

In the 'Beyond The Video' video they stated "The video is about love, and not wanting to die from it" but I think the meaning is much deeper. The statement "This is gospel" means "This is good news" according to a simple Google search. "This is gospel for the fallen ones, locked away in permanent slumber" of course "fallen ones" and "permanent slumber" means death and with the Google definition of "gospel" the line can translate to "This is good news, for death".

"Assembling their philosophies from broken memories" according to Wikipedia there is a philosophy of pain (link to original Wikipedia webpage: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pain_(philosophy) )
Brendon or anyone else suffering from any sort of pain could be spoken about in this line. "Broken memories" can mean any sort of more pain.

In the background you can here people saying "This is the beat of my heart, this is the beat of my heart" this line could mean anything about love.

"There gnashing teeth and criminal tongues conspire against the odds" can mean different ways or forces of pain conspiring or coming together to hurt or send pain to whom ever is being talked about in this song.

"But they haven't seen the best of us yet" maybe Brendon or, again, whom ever is being talked about is trying to fight back against the "Gnashing teeth and criminal tongues" that are trying to hurt them.

"If you love me let me go, if you love me let me go" Maybe whom ever is being talked about is asking the "Gnashing teeth and criminal tongues" to stop what ever they may be doing to the person getting hurt. When I say 'Someone/Whom ever getting hurt' I mean mentally or physically.

"Cause these words are knives and often leave scars" could mean the words the hurting person is receiving is hurting them even more. "The fear of falling apart" could mean that whom is hurting has a fear of losing their other, either that be a lover or a best friend. "Truth be told I never was yours" could mean, if the song was about love, the hurting person is telling someone else that he/she may already be in a relationship. That line could also mean that he/she is saying to someone who thought they were together that they were never together. "The fear, the fear of falling apart" is restating that the hurting person has a fear of losing there other.

"This is the beat of my heart, this is the beat of my heart" is just restating that the line has to do with loving someone.

"This is gospel for the vagabonds, ne'er do wells and insufferable people". "This is gospel for the vagabonds" would translate to "This is good news for the wanderers who may not have a job or home". "Ne'er do wells and insufferable people" would translate to "Lazy, irresponsible and unpleasant people" which would mean Brendon is pointing out lazy, irresponsible, and unpleasant people.

"Confessing their apostasies" would translate to "Confessing about abandoning political belief". "Led away by imperfect imposters" explains itself, the people Brendon is talking about in the line "Confessing their apostasies" were led away by imposters or were told what to do by imposters that were imperfect.

"Don't try to sleep through the end of the world" probably means don't try to end your life, live it to its fullest. "And bury me alive" could mean don't try to end the hurting persons life, let them live. "I wont give up without a fight" the hurting person is not going to give in and just let you kill them, there are going to fight back if its the last thing they do.

Then the chorus repeats and it would still mean as I said above.

Then the words "The fear of falling apart" and "This is the beat of my heart" repeat multiple times which could mean that he/she is dying and they are afraid of letting there loved one(s) go.

Then in the video, the person hurting (Brendon) dies.

I think this song basically tells about a suicidal moment or anything that deals with permanent hypnosis. Most of these lyrics tell about all forms of suicide.

Honestly this song can mean a lot of things, but i see it as he's struggling be it drugs, or death, or romance. Either way there is conflict in his life and i think that he is trying to rid himself of it but anyway there is no wrong or write interpretation.
