I can tell you exactically what the song is about because I heard it from the horses mouth. At Kelly's "Behind These Hazel Eyes" concert, I was able to go backstage and see Kelly. When I asked her what (my favorite song) Because of You was about, she told me that she wrote it when she was 16, and it was "sort of a diary entry at first". She said that she comes from a broken family, like many children around America, and she wrote it about her parents divorce. She also commented that she doesn't think that adults realize the effect divorce has on children. She told me that she didn't want anyone to think she was sad or depressed - that writing the song was the way she got over the depression of her parents divorce. She'd gotten a lot of fanmail regarding the topic of divorce, and she said that she thoguht maybe God had her write the song in hopes that children who were dealing with the issue of divorce could relate to it; and, that the song could possibily help them like it helped her. She also said (in an interview - not to me this time) that she discussed releasing the song with her family and, although the song covers a painful territory, they also thoguht the song was better to be out -possibily helping people, than stuck in some notebook. Anyways, hopefully that helps.

I love Kelly and this song is so awesome.
In an article Kelly said 'Because Of You' isn't about breakups, it's about her family. Kelly wrote this when she was 16 because her friend was having a hard time with her family and Kelly was the same and could relate to her friends troubles.
As much as it seems to be about a guy, it's actually not. It is about growing up in a broken home.

It seems to be about a child seeing the break down of her family, and her mother not being a mother. The whole thing seems to be the fact that she is her mother, someone who will not let others in.

Kelly Clarkson is my favorite singer. This sounds exactly like my life. My mom got divorced and has not gone on a single date or had a friend in over 15 years. Now I find that I can't make friends easily or have any relationships with guys. I'm afraid to open up becasue when she did bad things happened. I love her but, its all her fault. I have no social life "because of you" mom. Everytime I hear this song I cry.
It also reminds me of my friend who's mom died and was the same way. She died of cancer in her heart but my frind swears she died from a broken heart. The man she once loved went to jail for a crime he didn't do.

I think that it could go either way. It could be that her husband or boyfriend dying and that she tried to help him but she knows that he is going to die. Also that she's staying on the safe side so that she won't get hurt even more and she's "dying" of a broken heart. Or it could be that her mom and dad got divorced or her dad died and then her mom became miserable. And now her mom has literally died of a broken heart and that has tought her to stay on the safe side so that she doesn't get hurt like her mom

"Because of You" is about the negative legacies parents leave their children with. They enforce their ideas and bad experiences they've had on their kids without realising the true impact of their words. It's about the vulnerability they create within their children. It's about the way Kelly has been influenced by her mother leaning on her in a way that a child shouldn't have to deal with. I believe Kelly wrote this song for the future generations when we have children. To make people understand the true impact their words have on their children and to tell us it's not ok; kids need stability and encouragement to go out and experience things for ourselves.

I think this comes from the standpoint of a person living with a parent or sibling who has Borderline Personality Disorder. If anyone has lived with someone like that, they will understand the pain! When Kelly was growing up her parents got divorced, her father did not die when she was younger. When she says "Iwatch you die I heard you cry" it doesn't mean he really died but the life was sucked out of him but he was still living. Now she thinks about what happened with her parents and she doenst want it to happen to her.

This song is about a daughter whose parent's marriage fell apart and how it scarred the mother so much so that she was emotionally crippled and unable to start anew. I.E., the mother has transferred her fears of not having a healthy relationship onto her daughter by her constant worries/concerns, whether imagined or real. In the song, it sounds like the mother eventually killed herself and the daughter is only too aware of the impact of her mother's unhappy relationship(s) in her life (the daughter's life) and is now afraid of following in her mother's footsteps.

I think that the song is about a young girl seeing the deteriation of her family. Her father left and her mother was broken hearted, it left the young girl mentaly scared and then when she is older she has an argument with a lover and remembers what happened when she was younger ie the arguments and fights and doesn't want that to happen to her family "I will not make the same mistakes that you did"

I agree that this song is about the power of divorce on children. I also think that Kelly is a wonderful singer and has a great voice. I do think that she is wrong, however when she writes that she feels in all of these ways "because of you." Divorce and abuse do have powerful shaping forces on lives, but as an adult, Kelly, or anyone else, chooses to let these feelings control his or her behavior. By choosing to not let the behavior of parents who divorce or anyone who is an abuser control them, adults can break free from the control of these people.

If you listen closely to the lyrics, then it is apparent that it relates most the relationship between a father and a daughter.....the chorus..implies that the father tried his best to make sure his daughter was alright and safe, but never taught her to take risks, never "stray away from the sidewalk." for this reason, she could never take risks, never learn to trust herself even if she did. This is why, she could not find someone she could fully trust and now she is ashamed because her life is empty, i.e., without a guy. Psychologically speaking, the relationship that the daughter had with her father is a precursor to the relationship she will seek in her love life... Her dad performed all the societal obligations of being a father like protection and success, but deprived her of the basic things in life like love, care, concern and trust. and because of him, trust and love is lacking in the daughters life, even now when she is an adult.
